‘Sheriffs are going to be emboldened’: Republican sheriffs are raring to implement Trump’s deportation plans.

Republican sheriffs see their political capital at a high.

President-elect Donald Trump has powerful allies on the ground preparing to help him execute his plan to deport millions of illegal immigrants: the nation’s sheriffs.

Long viewed as crucial to federal immigration authorities’ efforts to track down and remove people who cross the border illegally, many Republican sheriffs are preparing in a second Trump term to arrest even more.

Many of these sheriffs, aligned with Trump, are expecting to see an expansion of a federal program empowering them to interview and detain suspected undocumented immigrants. They’re also hopeful Congress will supply funding that would allow them to conduct more patrols specifically intent on capturing migrants.

“Sheriffs are going to be emboldened,” said Thomas Hodgson, who served as sheriff of Bristol County, Massachusetts, for 25 years and appeared alongside other sheriffs at the White House during Trump’s first term. “They’re going to realize that, ‘Hey, look, [Trump] is a guy who means what he says — us stepping in and taking charge, we’re going to get backed up and we’re going to be able to do what we took an oath to do.”

“You’re going to see sheriffs very, very active in this immigration front,” Hodgson said.

On the eve of Trump’s inauguration, many Republican sheriffs believe they have never had more political capital than at this moment. Frustration over immigration helped propel Trump to the White House — and sheriffs’ cooperation will be instrumental in his plans to carry out an expensive and complicated mass deportation operation. Sheriffs are unique in law enforcement in that they are elected to their positions — and many have latched onto Trump’s tough-on-crime brand to boost their own political prospects.

Sheriffs “absolutely” feel empowered by the results of the election, said Volusia County, Florida, Sheriff Michael Chitwood. “It may take away the guardrails. You may see sheriffs go in and start to do immigration checks. You may get to see something that we didn’t do.”

Yes, immigration is going to be controlled, no more countries like Venezuela opening their prisons and mental institutions and sending gang members, criminals nd schizophrenics to hurt Americans.

You are still welcome to apply and wait your turn to come in, no more economic migration by the millions.
The U.S. can no longer afford absorbing every other countries problems.

Did anyone bring up the fact that Ronald Reagan gave amnesty to 2.7 million illegal immigrants in 1986?

THREAD.  It's important for all people of good will to understand the Laken Riley Act before the Senate votes on it tomorrow. It’s  unconstitutional. It’s horrific in every word and clause. But there is a  deeper, more imminent violence lurking beneath its hate-filled text.

https://nitter.poast.org/equalityAlec/status/1879195865820364830#m

But there is something much deeper to consider. Laws like this are not just about the hundreds of thousands of people who will be detained indefinitely, for months and years, solely because they are accused–but not found guilty–of a minor misdemeanor.

Laws like this will infuse everyday life for tens of millions of people with the threat of imminent violence. How?

Because they enable other people to exploit undocumented people and  their kids and families. Domestic abusers, employers, bullies at school,  cops, etc. Merely *accusing* someone of something now gets them detained indefinitely no matter what.
Don’t come to the U.S. illegally and if you do, don’t cause any trouble , I’m pretty old , older than 99% of the illegal immigrants that come to the U.S. and I have never been arrested for a felony or a misdemeanor, simple really.
Don’t come here illegally, that in itself makes you a criminal and if you do sneak in, better be a good boy or girl.
It’s time American citizens, often immigrants themselves are protected from what happened to Laken Riley and thousands of others, violence, rape, murder and theft.
We’ve had enough and we aren’t Europeans, we won’t make excuses for Migrant rapists and criminals.
The majority of immigrants who come here are not criminals. It seems so to you because Fox News is constantly demonizing them. You need to have a sense of proportionality. There are millions of them in this nation and even with a lower crime rate than Americans it seems that they're criminally minded because Fox News brings up a crime committed by them on a daily basis. It's easy to find a criminal a day when there are millions of them and in spite of the lower crime rate.

By analogy Hitler did the same to Jews of which there were hundreds of thousands living in Germany back then.

We are a nation of laws, apply for immigration like everyone does and did , if you come here illegally, I say , go back, apply, wait your turn , you can’t jump the line, break the cue, that in itself is unfair to the millions of others who came here legally.

Most countries are ones of law... so that isnt special.

And I agree that if you enter a country illegally, then that gets dealt with accordingly.

The issue isnt so much that they are removed, it is how it is done and how to approach the people who have been there a very long time and have children. Regardless of legality, illegal immigrants are culturally accepted and a part of the how the US functions now... so some accommodation is required for those who are already there and how to proceed moving forward.

Amnesty is one option for those who are law abiding, for example, and get them US citizenship and make it the last time.
Everyone from that point is dealt with as per the law. In the end, those who are illegal are a product of failed US systems that clearly cant deal with the situation so you need to sort the system out first or the situation will continue regardless of what Trump does moving forward.

A very simplistic assessment.  Very, very few immigrants sneak past the border and walk through deadly deserts to enter.  The vast majority of undocumented aliens simply overstay their lawful visa.  Since they had been issued a visa, they were all screened for being dangerous or otherwise undesirable.  After years of integrating into society, building families, paying taxes, it is in nobody's interest to expel them.  In the vast majority of cases, doing so is simply stupid.

The assessment is also simplistic because it ignores US obligations it signed onto with the 1951 UN Convention on Refugees:
https://www.un.org/en/genocideprevention/documents/atrocity-crimes/Doc.23_convention%20refugees.pdf

Yes, the US signed this convention.  It requires the US to protect the rights of refugees, including granting asylum for bona fide refugees.

If you've read the US Constitution, you know that while the Constitution is the highest law of the land, treaties come next in lawful authority, followed by legislation.  Executive orders are below these, and below regulations even.

Personally, I'm outraged when the US government violates its own constitution, its own treaty obligations, it's own legislation and regulations, and when its President tries to subvert the rule of law by trying to nullify any of these by executive order.
