Which is the best answer to Sep-2012 ASI lost (compared to 1979-2000)?
50% [NSIDC Extent] or
73% [PIOMAS Volume]

Volume is harder to measure than extent, but 3-dimensional space is real, 2D's hide ~50% thickness gone.
-> IPCC/NSIDC trends [based on extent] underestimate the real speed of ASI lost.

CAA         - 3%
CAB         - 4%
ESS          - 7%
Kara         - 7%
medium melt rates in

Which is the best answer to Sep-2012 ASI lost (compared to 1979-2000)?
50% [NSIDC Extent] or
73% [PIOMAS Volume]

Volume is harder to measure than extent, but 3-dimensional space is real, 2D's hide ~50% thickness gone.
-> IPCC/NSIDC trends [based on extent] underestimate the real speed of ASI lost.

I added the monthly extent value for May 2022 into my long-term plot where I calculate the extent anomalies from 1979 up to now.
The average (1979-2022) May extent is now 13.11 M km². May 2022 had an average extent of 12.88 M km², which is a tiny 0.23 M km² less than that long-term average.
This month's value was again (way) above the long-term linear trend line. The difference of the actual month from that trend line is +0.97 M km² (calculated from the linear trend line this May should have been at 11.91 M km²).
The slope of the long-term linear trend line became again flatter by two digits (-0.0540 → -0.0538).

from NSIDC Data - Area & Extent Graphs

Once again, sea ice losses in the peripheral regions above the 10 year average,

while sea ice losses in the 7 regions of the High Arctic well below the 10 year average.

[ADS NIPR VISHOP (JAXA)] Arctic Sea Ice Extent.

June 18th, 2022:
I am not able to reach the ADS NIPR page.
A strange message. Maybe my computer has a virus.
I appreciate if someone else makes the post.
     Thank you.
