Weldon Ice Stream
« on: January 30, 2022, 09:59:25 AM »
Just noticed this calving in the Weldon Glacier in the Weddel sea, between the Filchner and Brunt shelves. It's not a very significant glacier but I found nothing about it on this forum, so I thought I'd just make a thread for completeness' sake.

It seems to calve about once a year on average, forming rows of rectangular icebergs that accumulates in fast ice for a few years, and then are washed away once in a while. Kind of similar behavior to Thwaites in that regard, although at a much smaller scale.

Thanks for the update grixm, and for the location map.

I see one iceberg didn't want to go with the flow.
Arctic ice is healthy for children and other living things because "we cannot negotiate with the melting point of ice"

Is that the one with open water above it in the picture? So it might be stuck?

Yes, it is clearly grounded, and obviously so when viewing the GIF.
