Update 20140908.

Extent: -24k6 (+7k vs 2013, +1371k vs 2012)
Area: -76k5 (-167k vs 2013, +1278k vs 2012)

Extent is 4.687 Mm2, still about +62k above the 2013 minimum (reached on 20130909).

The cyclonic activity causes a very big (relatively) drop in area. It is especially the ESS, CAB and Beaufort that are effected. Whether a similar extent drop will follow has to be awaited.

The remaining ice in the Kara Sea should not give ships attempting the NE passage much problems.

Wipneus: how close are we to see the Northwest Passage (Amundsens Route) open up temporarily this year? Looks like there still is a small possibilty for the ice to open up given its appearance on Hamburg charts..  8) Or maybe not...

See attached color coded sea ice concentration map. Much of the route looks open, still some ice is blocking. This has been the situation for a while with the very mobile ice opening and blocking in different places. No doubt some ships may pass using these changing conditions. An open passage can appear any time or within weeks, unless ice from the Central Ice Pack finds its way through the channels in the northern archipelago.

Update 20140909.

Extent: -10.3 (+55k vs 2013, +1351k vs 2012)
Area: -28.5 (-112k vs 2013, +1136k vs 2012)

Area and extent reached minimum 2013 on the 9th of September, 2014 is very close with area slightly below and extent a bit above those numbers. Of course the 2014 minimum is likely (my guess) not reached just yet. The activity is today mostly seen in the CAB that is still dominated by cyclonic activity, pulling in air from the lower latitudes.

Beaufort is region of the day. The ice moves with the winds without much change in extenjt or concentration.

The ice north of Greenland seems to be highly mobile, but over a 14 day period does not seem to go anywhere.

The movement looks almost tidal.

For most practical purposes, it looks like 2014 and 2013 are in a dead heat.  With negligible export, there has been an increase in volume.  I will be interested in those end of season numbers to see what the increase is over 2013.

Anyone aware of ongoing research following sensible heat increases at depth in the basin?

Wipneus, the detailed data for JAXA I'm downloading from ArctischePenguin says Created: 2014/09/10 05:07:55 UT. However, when I look at them, the latest date is September 8. Is there a different page for the latest, or am I doing something wrong?

That is right, the latest available is for the 8th. As mentioned before, I think the difference is actually 12, not 24, hours.

Update 20140910.

Extent: -14.7 (+33k vs 2013, +1385k vs 2012)
Area: +14.1 (-123k vs 2013, +1195k vs 2012)

The extent drop brings a new value for the minimum extent (4.662 Mm2), about 40k above the minimum in 2013.
For declines in extent and area you have to look at the ESS to day. The CAB had a big uptick in concentration and other regions were quit.

Region of the day is the Canadian Archipelago.  Winds from the north are opening the ice in the Parry Channel.

The Beaufort ice is steadily declining, no import caused by the Gyre. The star shaped ice island has turned "omega".

Perhaps I've already asked this question, but does anybody know the meaning of the different  shades of white-blue in the IJIS map at U.of A. Fairbanks? I thought any color meant SIC > 15%, but I'm not so sure now. Perhaps the fainter color is SIC < 15%?

Update 20140911.

Extent: -50k9 (-24k vs 2013, +1395k vs 2012)
Area: -20k7 (-180k vs 2013, +1233k vs 2012)

Extent has reached a minimum 4.611223 Mm2 that is about -10k below that of 2013. Area 2013 minimum was already "beaten" some time ago.

A surprisingly big drop in the ESS ice cover is the reason for the drops, the southern winds seem to do a good autumn cleaning.

It cannot be helped, the ESS must be the region of today. About one third of the remaining ice (measured by area) has disappeared in one day. Some, probably thicker, ice has gathered and contrasts as an area of high concentration ice, the rest seems to be in a "bad" state.

Perhaps, with the late assistance of the wind, the season's relentless inputs of heat into the ESS and peripheral seas, raising water temps, are via bottom melt finally "burning" through the remaining ESS ice?

Looking east of that in the Beaufort, there is a *lot* of area which no doubt is showing up as "ice" both in extent and area, which scarcely justifies the description.  This is EOSDIS of a moderately substantial area of the Beaufort from yesterday.

There's more from where that came from.  What a fascinating melt season.  What a fascinating season, period.  Snow in Calgary two days ago.  Temps in the low 30's (90F) in Seattle this weekend.

The cause of our late season melting wonder might have some source here:

That's an awful lot of energy to dissapate, and if things are getting windy, it may be getting refreshed from depth.  We may still have more than a few days to go before minimum.

Wow!!  Imagine a moderate wind swell impacting that slush.  I know the resolution of the image obscures the fact that there are still many intact (smaller) floes, probably 10's of meters across. Still, I'm visualizing waves sloshing all over that ice and melting it from all sides.  It sure looks like it is about to go "poof!"

Well it is still warm enough near O-buy 10 which is in that vicinity, but near the pole, where Obuoy 9 is it has become cold, around -10 C most of the time.  But it has been snowing at both locations judging by the cam.

The images of Chukchi show that the very mobile ice still leaves a local pattern of reds and blues.

Wipneus, could you post a graphic of the Svalbard vicinity tomorrow or the day after?  Curious to see the effects of rain and winds there.

Update 20140913.

Extent: -36k9 (-104k vs 2013, +1377k vs 2012)
Area: +21k3 (-214k vs 2013, +1247k vs 2012)

Extent is still declining in the CAA and ESS causing further drop in total extent. Not so for area, big increase in the CAB domnates the total figure.

You will find the updated graphs in the top post

I hope this is what Iceman would like to see. Here are the images centered on the Barents Sea, the one region that has a big positive anomaly. All caused by export from the central ice pack.

Adding an animation of the Fram and Vicoria exits to the Arctic Basin. The Victoria still seems to be the favorite.

Thanks!  So far not much sign of melting effects from the passing cyclones owing to warmth, rain, and Ekman pumping (not sure how much of a factor that last is in this region.)  One more on the way, likely after the extent minimum though it still might push down volume numbers a bit further.

I'd postulate that even with storms there has not been enough active circulation to produce significant ekman pumping.  If there were, I would expect pretty serious melt, as a major arm of the Norwegian current/North Atlantic drift splits off and passes between Franz Joseph and Svalbard.  That water at depth is warmer than that at the surface by 5 or more degrees C, but is 100M or more below the surface.

Update 20140914.

Extent: -44k4 (-149k vs 2013, +1286k vs 2012)
Area: -66k8 (-275k vs 2013, +1148k vs 2012)

The melt season has an exiting end. It is windy in the Arctic, today most of the declines are in the Greenland and Barents Sea no doubt caused by a cyclone north of Svalbard. Other regions change very little except the CAB that dropped in area.

Winds blow over the Canadian Archipelago as well. The north easterlies blow the Parry Channel clean. Very little ice can make it from the central pack through the blocked channels in the north.

This looks like a new low in area for the season if I'm reading your numbers correctly.  Do you expect  Cryosphere Today to take out the dip it recorded a few days ago?

Correct about the new low. My expected CT for Wednesday is +50k, a new minimum is unlikelier every day.

So it sounds like the last big drop was just "noise", and not indicative of any sort of new transfer of heat, looks like.  Looking at Jim Petit's numbers, +70K extent, -63K area vis a vis 2013. That strikes me as a statistical dead heat.

Update 20140915.

Area: +23.5 (-257k vs 2013, +1199k vs 2012)

Substantial extent increases in the ESS and Greenland Sea. Area increased in the Greenland Sea. Those two regions has big drops in the last few days, so we are watching rebounds here (if that is any explanation).

Beaufort is region of the day. Ice is moving due to the eastern winds. The remains of the star shaped ice island is still there, disappearing and re appearing due to the ice concentration near 15%.

Update 20140916.

Extent: +70k8 (-31k vs 2013, +1378k vs 2012)
Area: +119k9 (-114k vs 2013, +1306k vs 2012)

Strong increases in extent and area (first century for area) probably indicate the beginning of the freezing season. Most of it is in the CAB, but other regions are going up as well (Kara and Beaufort score small declines).

Update 20140917.

Extent: -18k1 (-59k vs 2013, +1396k vs 2012)
Area: -57k9 (-184k vs 2013, +1289k vs 2012)

Declines still holds a small chance of a new minmum open, extent and area are about +77k and 86k above the current minimums established on 20140914. The biggest changes are ion the Greenland Sea where the windfields of a cyclone north of Svalbard moves the ice around.

The Laptev section is the place where most of the declines take place. It is all driven by a cyclone with the center right over the Laptev Sea.

An animation shows what looks like the refreezing of the Parry Channel in in the Canadian Archipelago.

Why refreezing in the Parry and no other places close by?  And why no refreezing inside the 85th?

Modis pictures over the last ten days have shown the growth of new ice in wide leads between floes within the CAB. For example, the area just polewards of the "Laptev bite" showed this well on 12th and 13th September.

It looks that the data from Uni Hamburg is stable again, time to resume the daily reports.

First, what has been missed in 5 days. Here is the differences.

Here is the delta image of the changes in those 5 days. There are still declines in the ESS, some of Beaufort, Kara and the ice in the Barents Sea.
