2024 Melt Data to 31 October 2024
Although from now on there will be odd days when minimal melt occurs, melt is basically finished until March/April 2025.
The first two graphs attached show the comparison between melt recorded by NSIDC's "Greenland Today" and DMI. Greenland Today always shows less melt that DMI, but this year the difference is extreme, with DMI showing very high melt, and Greenland Today low melt.
As I have reported before, they both defend their algorithms so no explanation is forthcoming, which is a shame.
The 3rd graph shows DMI data in more detail including the 2018-22 average. DMI does not publish numerical melt data going back before 2018.
Greenland Today has data going back to 1979. The 4th Graph shows a summary of that data, including decadal averages and the extraordinary 2012 year. Clearly melt is increasing as the years go by. However it seems that year round precipitation is also increasing, meaning SMB gains as yet are not decreasing. It is a pity we do not have access to SMB numerical data also going back to 1979 in a similar format to Greeland Today's melt data.
