2024 Arctic Sea ice area & extent data
« on: January 02, 2024, 05:00:48 AM »
I write this post to not repeat myself every day.

I post a table of values and a graph daily. The source of the data is:
https://ads.nipr.ac.jp/vishop/#/extent

On both (table and graph), I will highlight 2010-19 Average, 2024 and  the 5 years with daily lowest minimum, with the following colors:
  • Average of 2010 to 2019 (dashed violet line)
     2024 (solid red line)
The Lowest: 2012 (solid green line)
2nd. lowest: 2020 (solid brown line)
     3rd. lowest: 2019 (solid yellow/orange line)
     4th. lowest: 2016 (dot-dashed light green line)
5th. lowest: 2007 (solid blue line).
  • I highlight 2020-2023 average only on the table (gray)
Sometimes I will highlight 2000’s average only on the graph (black with a dashed line).
  • If there is not official value for some year, I will calculate the average data for that day and post it on the table highlighted in yellow.
On both attachments I usually include the 15 lowest values. I will include more values if the highlighted years are not within the 15 lowest. I sometimes include a couple of years more.

Sometimes a year in the 1979-1999 range falls into the 15 lowest. In that case, I'll include this year in the table values, but I will skip it in the graph.

Which is the best answer to Sep-2012 ASI lost (compared to 1979-2000)?
50% [NSIDC Extent] or
73% [PIOMAS Volume]

Volume is harder to measure than extent, but 3-dimensional space is real, 2D's hide ~50% thickness gone.
-> IPCC/NSIDC trends [based on extent] underestimate the real speed of ASI lost.

JAXA ARCTIC SEA ICE EXTENT:  13,063,864 KM2 as at 06-Jan-2024

- Extent gain on this day 89k which is 50 k more than the average gain on this day (of the last 10 years) of 39k,
- Extent gain from minimum on this date is 8,928 k, which is 759 k, 9.3% more than the 10 year average of 8,169 k.

- Extent is 20th lowest in the 45 year satellite record.

- Extent is  601 k MORE than 2023,
- Extent is  121 k MORE than 2022,
- Extent is  675 k MORE than 2021,
- Extent is  443 k MORE than 2020,
- Extent is  896 k MORE than  2018,
- Extent is  674 k MORE than 2017
- Extent is  230 k MORE than 2012
- Extent is  1,038 k LESS than the 1980’s Average
- Extent is  502 k MORE than the 2010's Average.

On average 83.3% of extent gains from minimum to maximum done, and 58 days to maximum.

Projections. (Table JAXA-Arc1)

Average remaining extent gain (of the last 10 years) would produce a maximum in March 2024 of 14.70 million km2, 0.82 million km2 above the March 2017 record low maximum of 13.88 million km2, which would be 18th lowest in the satellite record.

NSIDC Data

For the first time ever I am blocked from downloading the data files at https://nsidc.org/arcticseaicenews/sea-ice-tools/

I have contacted NSIDC about it.
Has anyone else had a problem today?

Get your files from the list here:

https://noaadata.apps.nsidc.org/NOAA/G02135/seaice_analysis/

The direct links there seem to work. I think it's the "masie_web.apps" bit that's borked right now.

NSIDC ARCTIC SEA ICE AREA (5-day trailing average):

The High Arctic sea ice area gains are close to maximum, so only slow sea ice area gains from now to be expected.

As cold moved south into Canada and the Atlantic Front (and perhaps Fram to JJL ice export increased), Peripheral Seas sea ice area gains have accelerated.
