Strips of sea ice have arrived at Jan Mayen in the Greenland Sea. on 12th May.

These strips have drifted away from the pack further back up the Fram Strait. They might not look particularly noteworthy but this is the first time since April 2004 that sea ice has reached the island.

Probably more as a result of the persistent northerly winds and greater Fram export we have noted this year.

In the bottom right of the image you can see a person walking (probably a meteorologist).

So how far did they drift? And how do they stay strips? If i would have to guess the picture from the caption i would go for bits and pieces of ice so i am curious why/how this ice arrives as strips.

That's something I've been wondering about as well Kassy, but then on a much larger scale. Why don't more bits and pieces of ice float away from the ice pack? Why does it all stay together instead of spreading out and filling the basin?

Happy to read about it on another thread.

Kassy/Freegrass. I don't profess to have an in-depth knowledge on drift ice. Like you I have often seen long sea ice strips form especially during windy spells in the Greenland Sea and the Bering sea, like a flock of gigantic sea gulls heading away from the pack.

I have found this information from this book Arctic Sea Ice, which I hope is not too small to read and I think helps explain the process.

I was doing some reading up on Wrangel Island and was amazed at how pretty it is. I wish I could go and camp there for like 2 weeks and enjoy the solace and solitude. Plus there would for sure be no worries about covid-19, but a polar bear would replace the viral danger.

Ha, I did see your post the other day commenting about how this was possible and I was surprised to see the ice roll in with the fog yesterday! Once again, this is yet another new thing I have seen this year. I wonder how long it will be there until it's blown out to sea again?
