Unfortunately, it seems the netweather forum is going down the climate denier route.

I've become the 3rd "pro-AGWer" to get a temporary ban from there in the last month. They've set up a thread for the "sceptics" there for them to spread their denier propaganda unchallenged, and the people whom the mods deem non "sceptics" are not allowed to post in that thread, challenge the denial propaganda or point out the false information being spread. I questioned the rationale behind it, and got banned!
I fear netweather is going to become another denier forum, which is unfortunate, as it was great for a while. The two main moderators of the climate and environment area are ardent climate deniers, and have been using the banhammer on anyone or questions them lately.
I guess I won't be submitting a poll to ARCUS on behalf of netweather anymore!

Anyway, more time to post here


I wonder is this a problem in other forums that have climate areas? Has anyone had similar experiences elsewhere?

Dr. Ricky Rood maintains an infrequently-updated blog over at Weather Underground (http://www.wunderground.com/blog/RickyRood/show.html). Dr. Rood, a professor over at the University of Michigan,  is a supporter of climate change theory, as are the majority of those in the forum. Be warned, though: there are a number of sometimes pretty nasty deniers lurking, along with some thoroughly ignorant ones who are for whatever reason allowed to disrupt the forum time and again. In addition, Dr. Jeff Masters' blog (http://www.wunderground.com/blog/JeffMasters/show.html) also covers climate change--more often outside the hurricane season--though his forum, too, is frequented by a large number of Fox-loving ignorati...

Cheers for those Jim, will have a gander during the evening.

I know on reddit, there is a sizeable and organised group of deniers, that arrange mass downvoting of any climate related posts on the site, especially in the "science" subreddit, that has 3.5 million subscribers.

There is some good discussion occasionally at the environmental threads of POForums and Malthusia. The former seems to experience waves of denialists that occasionally wash through, but most of the time the discussion is more sane (except for some persistently cranky posters, but all threads have those.) The latter has mostly managed to keep out straight-up denialists, but has done so by now closing itself to new members/contributors, except by invitation. Let me know if you want in there and I'll see what I can do.

The other standards are, of course, climate progress--mostly policy/media stuff; and realclimate--more scientific, but tends to wander annoyingly off topic in the open thread and get into personality wars, imho:

climate sight
skeptical science (that is real, not fake, skepticism--one of the best debunking sites)

tamino's "open mind" blog, desdemona despair (gotta love that one), and stoat "taking science by the throat" are not specifically devoted to climate, but often cover stories on it or do good analysis.

(You shouldn't have any trouble finding most of those with a simple search.)

I'm sure there are many others that have just flown out of my brain, or that I have never heard of. But these are the ones I frequent the most.

The Guardian has pretty good climate change coverage on the whole, and there can be some very thoughtful and informative discussion below the line - but also some dismayingly predictable denialist dross. You could play Skeptic Bingo, eg:

Cheers guys. I'm familiar with many of the blogs and websites ye mention, but was thinking more forums like this, or perhaps how netweather was, that have a mixture of views and posters, that allows for debates between people with different stances on climate.
I find a lot of lurkers tend to go to those mixed opinion sites, and it's important to counter the denier nonsense with the actual science, and keep a scientific presence in these areas.
Climate change denial thrives on ignorance, so its important to make ignorance of climate science as difficult as possible
