The cheapest Chinese electric cars are coming to the US and Europe

A lot of it may depend on their battery management software.

The software can be as smart as you like, but one constant remains the same.  You can't charge fast without creating heat.  If you don't dissipate the heat, you damage the battery.  No amount of software will get around that.

Secondly Tesla uses a battery with many thousands of individual cells, EU manufacturers tend to use the pouch cells which are larger.  The problem is, as I found when really delving into the studies on batteries and battery life, the pouch cells break down internally whilst, externally, reporting more power and availability.  Until you use them and they drop dead half way through.

My take?  Nothing has changed, they are, again, cutting corners to try and get ahead of the pack and don't even care if the end result is a significant impact to the customers.

Leaping forward through technology has not really been a fact in VAG for some while now.  More a case of not wanting to spend the cash required to take the really big leaps which need to come in order for us to be able to embrace EV's fully.

i'm looking hard at the little chinese EVs as station vehicles in ag/industrial settings. Right now we got an assortment of golf carts, pedal bikes, dirt bikes, and pickups as station vehicles. A little EV pickup would be perfect. We do a lot of maintenance inhouse, so lack of EV mechanics is not a limiting factor.

For now, “EV” here includes hybrids.  But for those who must go by car, choosing to pay for less polluting options is a welcome trend.

Lyft's new 'Green Mode' lets riders request an EV
Quote
Green Mode is the next step in Lyft’s Green Cities initiative. Last year, the company announced all its rides were carbon neutral through carbon offset purchases. All EV charging for Lyft will be covered by 100 percent renewable electricity.
...
Lyft is also introducing EVs to its Express Drive program. Express Drive allows drivers to rent a car for the purpose of driving for Lyft. These drivers will now be able to rent EVs, and for the time being, unlimited charging will be included in the weekly rental rate. The Express Drive EV option will start in Seattle and Atlanta before rolling out to other regions.

Norway's EV sales are about to skyrocket to new high with Tesla Model 3 arrival
Quote
I expect that those first 5,000 Model 3 vehicles are scheduled to be delivered in the first quarter, which would indicate that Tesla could more than double its deliveries in Norway and easily push BEV sales to over 50% of the market.

That’s going to be an important milestone because new vehicles with an internal combustion engine are going to be in the minority.

When you add the introduction of the Audi e-tron, Mercedes-Benz EQC, and the ramp-up of the Kona EV, Niro EV, and a few other electric cars, I would bet that all-electric vehicle sales will represent over 70% of new passenger vehicle sales in Norway in 2019.

If you are in Norway right now and you are considering buying a gas-powered car, I would think twice about it because I think your resale value will be bad. Like really bad.

Europe's Diesel Drivers Beware: Heftier Tax Is On the Way
Quote
Here’s another reason not to buy a diesel-powered car, and why consumption of the fuel could ebb in one of the world’s biggest demand centers: tax.

For decades governments within the European Union have taxed diesel at a lower rate than rival gasoline, but that advantage is eroding fast as they seek to clean up the environment, and the fallout from Dieselgate rumbles on more than three years after it happened. The shift illustrates a fundamental change in the treatment of a transport fuel that has long been favored across the continent. ...

Nikola Motors announces all-electric version of the semi truck as Tesla Semi changes the game
Quote
Nikola Motors, an electric and hydrogen truck startup, is announcing new all-electric versions of their semi trucks in order to compete with Tesla Semi.

The startup first announced plans for a hybrid electric and natural gas semi truck over 3 years ago.
They later changed their plans to hybrid battery-electric and fuel cell hydrogen trucks with plans for a massive hydrogen supply chain and fueling station network.
Later, Tesla unveiled its all-electric semi truck that showed battery-electric class 8 vehicles were viable and it changed many people’s perspectives.
At the time, Nikola Motors mocked Tesla’s effort – arguing that they couldn’t achieve the range that they were claiming on battery-electric only.
Now they are announcing battery-electric versions for two of their truck models:
They are only talking about Nikola Tre (left) and Nikola Two (right) – and not Nikola One, which is their main long-range truck…

Sono Motors Sion | Fully Charged

Sono motors claims about 18km of solar only range.  That's more than I expected. That seems usable for some niche applications. As a proof of concept it is great. I don't expect fully solar cars any time soon, but for low speeds, short range applications solar cars might become a reality.
I am an energy reservoir seemingly intent on lowering entropy for self preservation.

Presumably that 18kms miles (30km) an average per day. But how much variation from dark cloudy winter day to sunny summer day?

Full battery range 250Km (155 miles), so that allows some scope for bad days  - might manage 3-4000 miles a year with hardly ever charging.

This is the car I've ordered last summer. I'm number 6000-something on the list.

Though I'm still somewhat sceptical, I really hope they can make it, because this would the first affordable family EV on the market, and could very well be the VW beetle for the people that Tesla and others refuse to build.

With luck, they'll start producing before the year is out, and we'll hopefully get ours before the summer of 2020.

I have a feeling the Sion will fail due to escalating costs, but it's a great idea.

Yes, initial price for the battery (size unspecified) was 4000 Euros. This was recently increased to 9500 Euros for a 35 kWh battery, and led to much disappointment on the German forum that I occasionally visit to keep track of things. People cancelling their reservations, etc.

BTW, I don't think this was known when the Fully Charged video was made. The car also won't have a sun roof with solar modules in it (because light effects could cause epileptic seizures) and there won't be three individual seats in the back, but rather 2+1. The rest is still up for grabs (V2G for instance, or heat pump AC), but Sono Motors has struck partnerships with large firms like Continental and Bosch.

On the one hand that's good for an image of reliability and professionalism, but on the other you do wonder whether the price tag will stay at 25,500 Euros, or whether it will go up some more (initial price was 20K until the battery price increase). I'm willing to pay 27-28K. If it gets higher than that, I'll have to think about it.

They have over 9000 reservations now, and allegedly some serious investors as well.

Admission of shame:
- Currently I'm driving about 10k miles a year for work
- Recently I had to get a new car after an accident
- For budget reasons I went for a small efficient secondhand 1.0L petrol vehicle with a combined MPG of 65 rather than an electric or hybrid. I intend to drive conservatively, liftshare, walk/cycle when possible etc, but still... not ideal.

A big factor in an individual’s EV transition is time. Many people simply can’t wait for the EV they want, because their current car died or they otherwise need a replacement right now.  Price is another reason.  Soon there will be cheaper options, including a more robust used EV market.  Kudos for your effort to be as sustainable as possible!

Carmakers from Tesla Inc. to Nissan Motor Co. and Volkswagen AG are racing to make the car of the future. So far they’ve produced cleaner, quieter but costlier versions of the ones already out there. Profitability has been elusive -- many manufacturers are likely losing money on each unit, but sell in pursuit of future market share, according to Bloomberg New Energy Finance.

Electra Meccanica says its quirky reimagination of an automobile aims to redefine the category.

"Tesla is doing a good job on building big cars -- conventional cars that are electric," says Kroll, who earlier worked on electric drive systems for NASA in California and befriended the co-founders of Tesla, Marc Tarpenning and Martin Eberhard.

“This company is producing the car that Elon Musk wishes he were building,” Kroll said in a separate interview with Bloomberg Television. “It is great to produce a $45,000, a $100,000 car or a $250,000 car. But for the masses? A $15,000 car that can get them to stop using gas. That’s creative."

Leona Green, 64, and her son Matthew, 41, were the Solo’s first customers and have been driving it for two years in Vancouver. They park it on the sidewalk in front of the deli they own for catering runs and have ordered a second because they kept fighting over it.

“I almost don’t want everybody having one,” she says. At least a few times a day, she passes out cards with the Solo’s specs, kept on hand to avoid answering the same questions repeatedly.

2020 Kia Soul Electric Gets 243-Mile EPA Range Rating
Quote
The vehicle will be powered by a next-generation, state-of-the-art liquid-cooled lithium-ion polymer 64 kWh battery. That’s the same as what’s found in the Kia Niro EV.

Considering that the current Soul EV, with its 30-kWh battery pack, is EPA-rated at 111 miles, we figure this 2020 Soul EV, with 64-kWh on board, will travel close to 240 miles per charge, maybe even more. Sadly, since it’s Kia, this will be a limited offering in the U.S., so availability will be an issue. ...

Volkswagen is pushing for CO2 neutral production of electric cars
Quote
The Volkswagen group is doing a 180-degree turn from their emission cheating days to pushing for CO2 neutral production of electric cars.
In a new presentation, VW shows how the I.D., its first next-generation electric vehicle, will be “CO2 neutral throughout the entire life cycle if the customer consistently charges with green power.”

They want to address CO2 emissions through the different phases including manufacturing.  In the manufacturing phase alone, VW says that “the carbon footprint of the ID. will be improved by more than 1 million tons of CO2 per year.”

They want to use green power throughout the entire supply chain and at their own factories. ...

VW’s comparative graph below.

that's a good one that graph, because if we really want to talk about reducing our footprints we have to look at device(car)-lifetime over all footprint.

this is why i believe that something that lasts much longer than average and can be repaired instead of thrown and replaced has a better over all balance than something cheap that will turn obsolete quite quickly.

unfortunately for now that means expensive and oversized luxury cars while in fact they should i.e. volkswagen should have pushed the size of a POLO, reduce it's weight and build top quality instead of the golf. a current polo has the size of a 10-15 year old gold, hence would suffice.

problem is that their bread and butter production lines come with planned obsolescence which is poisonous for resources, co2 and overall sustainability.

no doubt, we're definitely not there yet, far from it, but at least things have started to move and and at an ever accelerating pace.

that's not a very professional test, conditions differ by 20C and road conditions with other tests he made and then the e-tron, compared to a tesla model X with a similar battery size is about 300kg heavier, which means it's another class of car.

for those who are interested i recommend to search for reviews on the recuperation, braking and transmission interaction in your language. i read this kind of stuff in german, hence can't help much with where to find english or other language reviews.

finally this was a bit like comparing an audi Q5 (model X) with an audi Q7 or apples with pears. nevertheless one can get an impression and one can see that those things are indeed ready to be launched in numbers.

That’s why I titled it, “Bjorn Nyland’s e-tron test vid” and not “Official video review of the Audi e-tron.”  ;) And Bjorn is very clear that conditions were sub-optimal and would be better on warmer, dry roads.  It’s a Winter Range Test, not an ultimate review of the car..

As a measure of Audi’s tech, and as a temper for potential customer’s expectations, comparison to the well-known Model X is appropriate; the lighter e-tron could be expected to be more sprightly and have a longer range.  But it appears (from ads I’ve seen) that Audi designed the car to maximize its quick-charge capability as the biggest differentiator, instead.  Knowing it could not compete with Tesla on range or performance, this makes sense.

Electrification May Disrupt the Automotive Supply Chain
https://fas.org/sgp/crs/misc/IF11101.pdf

The shift to electric vehicles and away from internal combustion engines is likely to have significant consequences for the U.S. automobile assembly and parts manufacturing industries. A widespread shift to electric vehicles has the potential to eliminate large numbers of jobs in vehicle and parts production, even if the vehicles are assembled in the United States.

In a conventional vehicle, the powertrain includes the engine, the drivetrain—the components and system that provide power to the wheels—as well as other associated components, such as the transmission, engine cooling and exhaust systems, and emissions control. Most passenger vehicles on the road today have an internal combustion engine, fueled by gasoline or diesel.

Ernst & Young has estimated that vehicles with conventional powertrains have as many as 2,000 components in their powertrains. That number rises when parts used for engine cooling and exhaust and sensors used in emissions control systems are considered. Of the nearly 590,000 U.S. employees engaged in motor vehicle parts manufacturing, about one-quarter—nearly 150,000—make components for internal combustion powertrains.

Electric vehicle powertrains differ substantially from those in conventional vehicles. Instead of the hundreds of moving parts built into a conventional powertrain, an electric vehicle powertrain has only a few. For example, Tesla has said its drivetrain has 17 moving parts, including two in the motor.

No emissions are generated, so all-electric vehicles do not have exhaust systems, mufflers, catalytic converters and tailpipes. Electric vehicle powertrains are also cheaper to maintain and, unlike many internal combustion engines that may deteriorate over time, electric vehicle motors may have lower maintenance costs.

Should electric powertrains displace those used by gasoline over the next decade and beyond, it is likely that both production and engineering jobs will be affected. Much of the mechanical and materials engineering work undertaken by automobile and parts manufacturers could be replaced by jobs requiring different skillsets such as chemical, battery, and software engineering or by imports of lithium ion batteries. Few U.S. universities offer degrees in battery engineering, a skill set that is in short supply even today.

Most manufacturing could be handled by robots.

BYD Sold Over 28,000 EVs In January — Will China See Over 50% Sales Growth Again This Year?

The y-o-y BYD comparison did benefit from some production limitations in the previous year, but still looking like the exponential part of the S curve. Still waiting for the full Chinese January sales figures.

"There’s no doubt that BYD’s sales will continue to climb steadily throughout 2019, and we may well see BYD’s annual passenger NEV sales rise from 2018’s total of 227,000 to top 400,000, or even 450,000 in 2019, pushing 80–100% growth. Remember that BYD makes its own batteries and cells, so it is in much more control of its critical supply chain than most other EV makers. BYD is also planning on bringing 811 NMC cell production online this year. Are BYD’s early 2019 figures indicative of another stunning growth year for NEVs in China?

BAIC, the 2nd largest player in the China NEV market, recently said it is aiming for at least 220,000 NEV sales in 2019, up some 38% from its ~165,000 in 2018. Having grown at 66% last year, is BAIC being coy, or is it genuinely concerned about outside battery supply limits putting a damper on its upward trajectory? We will know more when we see January’s sales figures.

SAIC, with its PHEV focus (and relatively smaller batteries), may be better placed in this respect. As the 3rd largest player in China, it grew meteorically in 2018 at over 114% year on year to gain sales of ~123,000. Can we expect over 200,000 sales in 2019?"

Just like they do every recession?

No; differently this time. :)

- US sales peaked three years ago.*
- Kids today no longer regard getting their drivers license and a car as a necessity.  Probably due to the growth of cell phones/internet/social media, hanging out at the mall is no longer the attraction it once was (one reason why so many malls are closing).
- The growth of Uber and Lyft in the last few years has obviated the need for a personal car for many people.
- Over the past few years, car dealers drastically reduced credit requirements in order to keep vehicle sales up.

Of course, the coming recession will further reduce car sales.  But the writing has been on the wall for quite some time.  And the fact that EV sales are increasing at the same time that ICE vehicle sales are decreasing is significant in its own way.

While January is typically a slower month for new-vehicle sales, analysts say the rising stock levels are becoming problematic because car companies will start this year with more unsold inventory than they had three years ago when U.S. auto sales peaked at 17.55 million for the year. Industry forecasters and some auto executives predict sales this year will fall well below that figure, dropping to under 17 million vehicles for the first time since 2014.

the current drop is due to a combination of factors:

a) diesel gate and the related discussions and uncertainties

b) the many E-models that are on the verge of being released to the market this and next year

c) recession we have not yet in general but we're close indeed and some countries are in already

e) the ever increasing market share, albeit still very low, of EVs is starting to show, especially
jointly with (b) that makes many customers hold on for a bit longer to make their decisions.

today a first small test in a leading german auto-magazine was published and soon many more thorough and detailed tests and comparisons of EVs will follow and if those tests show good results we might see another acceleration of EV market share soon and that will definitely have a significant impact on ICE-Sales. (logically)  ;)

From the article:

Honda is set to announce the closure of its Swindon car plant in 2022, with the loss of about 3,500 jobs.
The Japanese company made 160,000 Honda Civics in Swindon last year, of which some 90% were exported to the EU.

Elon Musk explained many times during the ramp-up of the Model 3 how production is only as fast as they can obtain parts from their slowest supplier.  Auto manufacturers in the UK must be terrified about the potential Brexit border/supply problems.  And this plant makes diesel and petrol engines; they will need a lot of flexibility if they are to survive even to 2022.

For the first time, the European Union has reached an agreement to set strict CO2 emissions standards for trucks.
Quote
New truck CO2 emissions must be 30 percent lower in 2030 than current emissions standards, according to the provisional agreement. It’s the first time the EU has set any sort of standard on truck CO2 emissions.

The emissions proposal was first presented in May 2018. As an interim goal, truck emissions should be 15 percent lower by 2025. The EU also reserves the right to review the 2030 goals in 2022.

The EU set its car and van emissions standards in December 2018. New cars sold in 2030 must emit 37.5 percent less carbon dioxide on average compared to 2021 levels. Emissions from new vans must be 31 percent lower. As an interim goal, the EU agreed to a 15 percent reduction in emissions from cars and vans by 2025. ...

Will Chines EVs take over the U.S. car market, the way small Japanese cars did in the 1970’s?

China's Kandi announces US approval to sell EX3 and K22 EVs
Quote
In a press release, Kandi CEO Hu Xiaoming said,

“We are thrilled Kandi Model EX3 and Model K22 received approval from the NHTSA. The approval has demonstrated our EV models meet all the necessary requirements and standards of the U.S. government. With this, we are confident in introducing our reliable vehicles to the American public. We believe both the EX3 and K22 are competitive in price and quality with advanced tech features that are in demand by American consumers.”

The K22 is a two-seater with an advertised range of 83 miles (134 km) and a top speed of 65 mph. Hu told Bloomberg in January that it will be priced at less than $20,000 in the U.S.

He didn’t have any pricing information at the time about the EX3, which boasts a range of 188 miles (303 km) and seats five. Kandi sells the EX3 in China as an electric version of Geely’s EX3 SUV, where it is available for less than $20,000 after incentives. It will very likely cost more in the U.S.

Kandi announced last October that the cars would qualify for the $7,500 U.S. federal tax credit. The company said it will now “begin the process of launching the Model EX3 and Model K22 for the American market.” No firm timeline is known at this point.

Range and efficiency test: e-tron, I-Pace and Model X driving in parallel at 120 km/h (75 mph)

German electric car rental company nextmove conducted the test between the three premium electric SUVs.

The company used a pre-series Audi e-tron since they haven’t started deliveries officially, a Tesla Model X 90D with a 90 kWh battery pack. and a Jaguar I-Pace, which is also equipped with a 90 kWh pack.

The test was performed with all three vehicles driving in parallel on a 87 km stretch of the Autobahn between the Munich airport and Landshut in Germany at an average speed of 120 km/h (75 mph)…

People who say it cannot be done should not interrupt those who are doing it.

while this is correct like so often, it's apples with pears because they are cars of different size and weight.

of course a 2700kg car eats up more juice than one of 2400kg or less and then the e-tron is an entire class larger in size, i.e like the difference between a Q5 and a Q7 while the i-pace and the tesla are more Q3 sized and Q5 weight the e-tron is Q7 sized and "Q8" wight, means above everything in weight (hope the little joke with Q8 is understood)

however the higher weight are no excuses, on the contrary i would have preferred if they had built a smaller Q3 sized suv if already it had to be an SUV but still one cannot just compare them. the data are perhaps correct but the result is misleading, especially the optical part of the graph where a few km are shown like a huge differnence to emphasized and reach the wanted image.
