Me and my lineations.  Red circles one. (See thread that started with a poll that asked when a crack would occur in this area, including an enlargement of this lineation from October 2.)  Orange circles a lineation 20 km upstream.  (Petermann Glacier is about 15 km wide in the red circle [okay, oval] area.) Screen print from Polar View image from 2019-10-28.

Looks like an orthorectification-error ... what is the source of that image?

edit: seems to be PolarView. I would guess that for some reason the geocoding of the image partially failed, as if they used an incorrect DEM, even though they don't use the DEM at all but only ellipsoid geocode  ???

From PolarView (Feb 7).  Is this what they call "fuzzy logic"? :D
The crack I'm watching 'so closely' is on the right.  Most of the wavy distraction is on the land beside Petermann Glacier.

Despite the "fuzzy logic" in the lower left of this screen print (PolarView Feb. 8) the trans-lateral crack appears to have a (different kind of) fuzzy connection to the SW (left) shore.  Previous images have suggested this feature (e.g., Dec. 6).

Note: I usually post comments about the potential rifting in this area on the Poll thread focused on this.

I'd be surprised if this summer doesn't spell the end for this, as others have been pointing out for a while now.

Sentinel-hub Playground image (more or less: pink = ice; blue = melting ...) showing lateral crevasse that hasn't budged this month (more or less -- under right date bar).

What amazes me is the two spots with a hint of blue on the frozen-over pond (under the "-02" of the left image date - about 4 date-bar widths down).  (From reading elsewhere, I know such supraglacial lakes can have a core of liquid water through the winter if deep enough, but that amazes me too.)

Not sure if this is the best location but just wanted to add as we approach another calving I got bored last year and tracked the last iceberg remnant throughout the years. I believe it is the same P-II-B that was studied at least through 2014 or so. In 2014 is grounded itself off Baffin just south of the settlement of Qikiqtarjuaq and has spent the years since being slowly disintegrated. Last summer it was grounded again and I lost track of it but the first pic is a worldview capture from mid-summer 2019. It floated up the nearby Matak Fjord into Auyuittuq National Park and finally shattered around mid-september. The leftovers spread throughout the area but the largest sliver left is currently frozen in the adjacent coronation fjord (67.24, -64.3). This is probably its final year as a recognizable iceberg as it slowly awaits its doom the coming summer. I am looking forward to see the evolution of the next ice island and where its journey takes it.

The "return [B8A*2,B03*1,B02*1]" setting at Sentinel playgrond shows a lot of meltponds.

Peterman Ice Shelf Katabatic wind effects

Ok, I try really hard not to post often as I'm sure that my babblings would be strange and incoherant to most minds, but I could'nt resist sharing this image of one of my favourite glaciers; Peterman Glacier.

As you can see, its a shot of the forward left side of the ice shelf, about 5km in front of the the glacier face. The interesting linear features I am interpreting as melt ponding on the ice shelf between large scale snow dunes formed by katabatic winds funneling down the glacier gorge.

I'm very surpised to see them in the first instance, but more so the scale and extent of the features. I would welcome any further insights that the forum veterans have.

CM, it is a sad reality of Internet forums that those who are intelligent enough to employ self restraint post much less often than others who are not as self aware.
Be that as it may, I encourage you to post more often, and be aware you are easy to understand and quite coherent.
To your specific point, it seems to me the huge melt pond area is on the sea ice in the fjord, rather than on the ice shelf itself. I note that another section of sea ice adjacent to the ice shelf has extensive (but smaller) melt ponding, right of the center. I have no specific explanation for the interesting phenomenon.

The crack at Petermann Gletscher is progressing, and we could well see a +/- 200 km2 calving later in the season (July/August).

Petermann Gletscher: The crack at Petermann Gletscher is expanding, the next few weeks will be interesting, will the potential +/- 200 km2 calf take off this summer? The crack is also only 1,5 km from the portside crack so only 7,5 % from being a full crack across the glacier.

Interesting. It's been a while since the last calving.
BTW do you think it has the potential to plug the Nares or at least disrupt ice export? 200 km2 seems too small for that.

That's about the size of it superimposed on the Kennedy Channel, if it all came out intact !

But I don't suppose it could. But broken up and joined by thick sea ice from the Lincoln it could make a substantial blockade !

Amazing, Niall! Thanks for that.

If it was sitting there in the channel stuck, could it cool the water behind it down quite significantly?

Thanks Niall. Thinking on it some more, the deep keel makes it more susceptible to the current, reducing the chances of lingering long, unless it gets stuck on Hans or one of the other islands somehow.

Worth having a look back to the start of this thread. Espen has plenty of images. The 2012 PII berg/ice island was still knocking around the Kane Basin in August 2013.

Isn't the implication of the lake drainage that the calving has already happened, just that we can't see it yet...

While we are waiting for the "Big One" at Petermann Gletscher, a similar calving type was seen at Ryder Gletscher in August 2016, notice how small the crack is just days before the actual calving.

I dont believe the sea ice in front of Petermann Gletscher is any problem to this Giant, but that said the sea ice normally goes away when in Petermann calves in Mid July and August.

Recent 'calving' (or releasing of ice previously calved but all frozen together until now) area is all but cleared out, as of yesterday's Sentinelhub Playground image.

Now, when will the blue circled area crack?  (I've been holding my breath for a year!  :-\)

In the zoomed in direct comparison i don't see the crack growing really.
