In her latest blog post Judith Curry linked to David Rose's latest article in Andrew Neil's "Spectator" organ. Hence as promised:

Quote
Perhaps given our long familiarity with David’s “skeptical” oeuvre we might be able to reveal Andrew Neil’s “plan to exploit the Covid crisis”? That being the case, let’s dive into David’s “silver linings playbook” shall we?

The Fail on Sunday has evidently moved on from "climate skepticism" to "Covid skepticism", but today's "Shock News!" isn't imparted by David Rose.

With delicious irony Peter Hitchens announced in today's online edition that:

Quote
I have had my first Covid vaccination for wholly selfish reasons. I did not do it for the good of others but for my own convenience. And I will have my second for the same purpose.

Will Piers Corbyn be next do you suppose?

Peter's words of wisdom are archived for posterity and your convenience at:

https://archive.is/Z5hFv

However I do find myself largely in agreement with one of Peter's points:

Quote
I thought last Monday’s Johnson proclamation was one of the most brilliant pieces of spin I’ve ever seen. The Prime Minister announced an extension of his January 4 lockdown for several more months. But he persuaded everyone to describe this miserable news as a great release. We’ll see.

Did you notice how often he used the phrase ‘not earlier than’ before the various dates he named? The opposite phrase ‘not later than’ is a tough contractual commitment.

But if you owed me any money and you promised in writing to pay me off ‘not earlier than’ any date you cared to name, I’d be a fool to accept such an empty pledge.

More "Shock News!" from the Daily Fail Group.

According to the Financial Times:

Quote
New Scientist, one of the world’s leading science magazines, has been bought by the publisher behind the Daily Mail in a £70m deal.

DMGT, which owns news titles, events and data businesses, said on Wednesday that its media arm had acquired the magazine from a group of investors led by businessman Sir Bernard Gray.
The London-based title, which was founded in 1956, has a weekly circulation of roughly 120,000 copies with about half of readers in the UK and the rest in Australia and the US.

It derives about three-quarters of its revenue from subscriptions and is expected to generate operating profit of about £7m this year on sales exceeding £20m.

Lord Rothermere, DMGT chairman, said the group intended to support New Scientist’s “exciting plans to grow as the go-to publication for anyone interested in the scientific world around us”.

Allegedly New Scientist:

I am proud to be able to bring you possibly the greatest "Shock News!!!" of this entire "skeptical" thread.

A comment of mine mentioning Arctic sea ice has been formally approved over at WTFUWT!

If you don't believe me I respect your point of view, but here is the undeniable evidence archived for all eternity, or at the very least until hell freezes over:

LOL maybe you should point out that that is not so much a climate feature as something that happens on round objects orbiting a star.

Does WUWT still exist?

It does indeed. I'm doing the rounds of the "usual suspects", following up on my theory that:

Quote
Climate change is top of the G7 agenda along with Covid-19, and you can rest assured that vested interests will not miss any opportunity to promote those interests over the next two months and beyond.

https://GreatWhiteCon.info/2021/04/allegedly-unsettled-science-by-steven-koonin-et-al/

If history is any guide Mr. Watts will send me away with a large flea in my ear as soon as he cottons on to my antics. Until then he is certainly promoting Steve Koonin's "Unsettled Science" magnum opus with all due vigour. Meanwhile Willis is proclaiming that:

Quote
Finally, the PIOMAS data is hugely autocorrelated, as is not uncommon with model output. It has a Hurst exponent of 0.93. As a result, the number of effective independent data points of the entire 1979-present dataset is only 3, so we can’t say anything about whether the trend is real or it is just an expected trend as is common with highly autocorrelated data.

How far does the Wall Street Journal reach, or Forbes, or The Times of London, or The Australian?

You might as well ask how long the proverbial frog in pot of water on stove will continue to ignore the warming temperature.  They won't change until they are forced to.  Reason has nothing to do with it, they worship self-serving greed at the risk of the very survival of themselves and their loved ones.  Just my humble opinion of course.
Let history record that WSJ opinion board has lost all credibility in their shameless pursuit of short-term profit for entrenched interests vs. long-term well-being of humanity.

I think you would be shocked at the glossy high-production quality fallacious climate pornography that continues to be sent to every member of the Maine State Legislature, and I assume government officials at different levels across the rest of the U.S. and perhaps the world.  According to those reports, formatted to look like authoritative IPCC documents, there is nothing of concern going on with the climate, or if there is, it is good for humanity.  The climate change denial industry has not gone away.

ps: I don't think there is anything natural about the see-saw in the Antarctic that started in 2014. Trouble is, sea ice gains in the Antarctic might be a sign of something awful happening down there caused by AGW, but how can you get beyond the simple (as in stupid) use of data by the denialists.

How many meters above sea level is Donald's refugium? Will he witness regular flooding of his property at king tides during his lifetime?

Very little is off topic in here Stephan! It looks as though 9 metres should just about do the trick:

The Bruun Rule
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Bruun Rule is a formula for estimating the magnitude of the retreat of the shoreline of a sandy shore in response to changes in sea level. Originally published in 1962 by Per Bruun,[1] the Bruun Rule was the first to give a relationship between sea level rise and shoreline recession.[2] The rule is a simple, two dimensional mass conversion, and remains in common use to estimate shoreline recession in response to sea level rise, despite criticism and modification, and the availability more complex alternate models.[3]

The rule
The Bruun Rule gives a linear relationship between sea level rise and shoreline recession based on equilibrium profile theory, which asserts that shore face profile maintains an equilibrium shape, and as sea level rises the increasing accommodation space forces this equilibrium profile landward and upward to preserve its shape relative to the new sea level.[4] As such, the Bruun Rule analysis assumes that the upper beach is eroded as the shore profile moves landward, and that the volume of eroded material is deposited offshore, resulting in a rise of the nearshore bottom which maintains a constant water depth.[5] The Bruun Rule predicts coastal recession to be as much as 10 to 50 times sea level rise, depending on the slope of the beach.[6]

Google Earth indicates that 2 meters SLR (or temporary storm surge, which could happen any year) would flood about half the property and 5 meters would cover the whole place.  A hurricane with a little wave action should do it.

Sadly his loyal (if ageing) readership will now be denied the pleasure of reading this recent learned discussion of Arctic science which I was vainly endeavouring to bring to their attention:

Now that Anthony has got that bile off his chest, WUWT is of course merely a sideshow to the main event.

Currently there are hundreds of articles in media outlets of all shapes and sizes favourably reviewing the latest magnum opus of one Steven E. Koonin, currently peddling his "Unsettled Science" snake oil to hordes of eager buyers.

Fortunately in all the circumstances the Great God Google seems to have noticed the GWC antidote advertisement:

https://GreatWhiteCon.info/2021/04/allegedly-unsettled-science-by-steven-koonin-et-al/#May-06

Here's an extract from page 2 of a relevant Google search. Do you suppose that we could bump it up to page 1?

Unlike the Wall Street Journal I was compelled to purchase a review copy of Steve Koonin's "Unsettled Science" tome. Here are my initial thoughts on perusing the index:

"Steve Koonin’s Unsettled Arctic Science"

Quote
We are forced to an unsettling conclusion. Evidently there are some areas of climate science that Dr. Koonin tells his eager readers nothing whatsoever about. It seems likely that he is also well aware that Arctic sea ice is the canary in the climate coal mine, which is why he has chosen to make no mention of it in his magnum opus.

In some "Shock News!!!" from Climate Etc. ex Prof. Judy is waxing lyrical about Prof. Koonin's new book in her latest collection of book reviews.

Fortunately I got my retaliation in early:

My initial impression was certainly not that Professor Koonin “comes across as very honest and trustworthy, and genuinely concerned about the integrity of climate science and the research process.”

On the contrary, from my perspective at least, he comes across as the very opposite of that.

My "Unsettled" book review series is finally getting to down to what Steve Koonin includes but gets wrong, as opposed to what he leaves out entirely:

https://GreatWhiteCon.info/2021/05/steven-koonins-unsettled-greenland-ice-sheet-science/

Quote
Personally I have very high confidence that Professor Koonin had great difficulty cherry picking a Greenland Ice Sheet quote from the IPCC that could be “spun” into supporting his case. Frankly his “southern tip of Greenland” effort smacks of desperation.

Unsettling, is it not?

You could also have used stuff from the 2020 paper

One graph by me extracted from their spreadsheet that was attached to the paper.

"my image" is sitting inside my PC 'cos I made it myself.

You could try opening a Twatter account. Probably Instagram would work as well but I've never tried that.

However I'll also try and find a "upload image to comment" plugin for Wordpress that doesn't adversely affect security...

Don't take too long, because I have to sleep, I have to eat, I have to have a shower (occasionally) and it's very boring just staring at the computer screen waiting for you to fix it.

The one I was thinking of has indeed been "deprecated" due to security concerns. The search continues....

However please see your personal mailbox for a potential alternative

The Washington Post has published a pro Koonin "Op Ed" by Marc Thiessen, a "Fox News contributor". Needless to say it's scientific accuracy leaves an awful lot to be desired:

https://GreatWhiteCon.info/2021/04/allegedly-unsettled-science-by-steven-koonin-et-al/#May-16

Quote
Perhaps Marc would like to show me where in his cited reference that phrase can be found. Failing that perhaps he’d prefer to show me where it says words to that effect. Failing that perhaps Steve Koonin himself could rise to the challenge?

Or perhaps not? I cannot help but wonder if Marc and Steve have previously seen this graph?

Steve Koonin has published a rebuttal of the Climate Feedback review of the Wall Street Journal's interview with him over on Medium.

As luck would have it I seem to be the first person to comment on his lengthy article:

Quote
Hi Steve,

An intriguing back and forth, but I have a more fundamental question:

Why does "Unsettled" fail to address the issue of declining Arctic sea ice? After all the IPCC states at the start of the introduction to the Summary for Policymakers of their recent Special Report on the Ocean and Cryosphere in a changing Climate that:

"Over the last decades, global warming has led to widespread shrinking of the cryosphere, with mass loss from ice sheets and glaciers (very high confidence), reductions in snow cover (high confidence) and Arctic sea ice extent and thickness (very high confidence), and increased permafrost temperature (very high confidence)"

For further info please see:

https://GreatWhiteCon.info/2021/05/steve-koonins-unsettled-arctic-science/

Thanks in advance,

Jim

Steve must still be in bed, because he hasn't got back to me yet  :(

Shock News!!! Steve Koonin has responded at length to my "skeptical" comment on Medium.

I responded at length, still somewhat sceptically. TL;DR this should give you gist of things:

Quote
Regarding "the topic somewhat distant from ordinary folks’ perception", that is largely my point. Is Arctic sea ice decline really any more distant to the average (wo)man in the street than sea level rise?...

As mentioned in my first comment above, at the beginning of their relevant reports the IPCC place equal emphasis on "mass loss from ice sheets" and "Arctic sea ice extent and thickness", so why discuss the former in your book but not the latter?

Steve has studiously ignored my more difficult follow up questions on Medium.

Of course I'm not taking his cold shoulder lying down, so here's the next episode in my long running "Unsettling" exposé:

Steve Koonin has still not deigned to reply to my (currently!) final comment at Medium. Hence part the sixth of my ongoing review of his magnum opus:

https://GreatWhiteCon.info/2021/05/unsettling-defence-of-the-undefensible/

Quote
Steven then rather ungraciously chose to ignore my follow up question:

Regarding “the topic somewhat distant from ordinary folks’ perception”, that is largely my point. Is Arctic sea ice decline really any more distant to the average (wo)man in the street than sea level rise?

Since Steve is evidently unable and/or unwilling to respond to my enquiry perhaps somebody else might be willing to do so in the space provided for that purpose below?

"Snow White" isn't the only critical voice expressing concern about Steven Koonin's book and lecture tour. Hence this recent review article:

https://GreatWhiteCon.info/2021/05/unsettling-koonin-critiques-continue/

Ben Santer has announced he is severing all ties with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Despite that "Shock News!" a quotation from Mark Boslough is my current favourite:

Quote
Most of the technical mistakes and misrepresentations in “Unsettled” may simply be attributable to Koonin’s trust of those advisors and lack of rigorous independent verification.

"Those advisors" being John Christy, Judith Curry, and Richard Lindzen.

Plus an informative infographic from Mark's suggested source:

It looks as though I've got some catching up to do in here!

Scientific American recently published a Koonin critique from Naomi Oreskes, Mike Mann et al.

https://GreatWhiteCon.info/2021/06/oreskes-mann-dessler-et-al-versus-koonin/

Quote
Towards the end of the article, in true “Merchants of Doubt” style, following the money trail behind the promotion of “Unsettled” is mentioned:

The misrepresentations cited as appearing in Koonin’s book are being amplified in right-wing media and beyond. A recent Washington Post column by conservative contributor Marc Thiessen repeats several points Koonin makes…

Thiessen is a fellow at the American Enterprise Institute. For those unfamiliar with the tangled world of organized climate denial, a recent study paints a pretty clear picture: of all the conservative, climate-denying think tanks that get Koch and other industry funding, AEI has gotten the most. It received some $380 million to peddle industry-friendly denial like Koonin’s, much of it through dark money pass-throughs to conceal that it’s coming from conservative and dirty-energy donors.

In response to the Oreskes et al. article in Scientific American Steve Koonin's plaintive cries about the lack of a "right to reply" are being echoed by all the usual denialospheric suspects. Hence:

By way of a pleasant change, in my latest piece of investigative journalism I finally have something positive to say about the Daily Mail's Arctic sea ice coverage:

Quote
For the record today’s Daily Mail article reports the facts and even quotes some actual scientists.

However not a lot of people know that I am far less impressed with Paul Homewood's recent efforts:

Quote
Needless to say the clear message the data sends to me is very different. Not a lot of people know that my earnest attempt to bring this salient fact to the attention of Paul and his loyal readers is still lying on his cutting room floor.

Not to mention Boris Johnson's:
