Hi folks,

Tomorrow I'll attend a conference by Jim SKEA, IPCC President, on "IPCC Conclusions from the 6th cycle and where are we going for the 7th cycle". IF I get a chance to ask questions (there should only be science students, no journalists I think), what would be your questions?

Please enter your suggestions, and I'll try to sort them and pick 2 or 3 of them... and I'll tell you how it went ! I'll also try to film if it is allowed.

Is the conference about the IPCC and the way it functions? Or about the conclusions specifically?

Going by the headline it is about the conclusions.

Not sure what to ask because what good are conclusions if the world mostly ignores them anyway.

How about "What is IPCC going to do about the Oil & Gas funded misinformation industry?

COP29 is at an autocratic Petrostate. Time to get political?

I would like to know more about how the IPCC deals with “hot models”.
If the current sinks aren’t the same as some point in the past when CO2 was 420ppm  or 560ppm why should we expect our models to operate within expected heating constraints of the past.

I'd like  to know if they are going to come up with a number for the Paris target rather than the current menu of methods which generate widely different results.

It seems Sir Skea was in Austria yesterday. I could have gone and asked him a question myself, if only I knew what to ask. It would probably be something along the lines of Kevin Anderson, about the positive feedbacks that are more or less ignored and how some scenarios are predicated on the assumption that some technology will be invented in the future that is going to suck all the excess CO2 out of the atmosphere.

I'll take some notes and summarize here if I can

Some interesting points.

Well not much since they are this scientific advice body. The broader conclusions are fine but for the summaries lawyers and lobbyists decent. Change that to phase down please.

I would generalize to when are we going to run models at resolutions which can resolve clouds. Should be possible by now if expensive. So we need some modelling CERN. Maybe we can run on their backbone when they are rewiring?

An actual value we should all try not to cross together...that would be a good idea. In reality that was 1C or so so that battle was lost last century. The countries are in no hurry with their pledges but that is politics not conclusions. We should really avoid 2C but we won´t do that either at the current rate.

An actual value not an offset from a baseline that is subject to substantial revision.

We don't know whether 1C is the dangerous offset from 1850-1900 or 2C is, because that temperature is not known accurately and can be shifted by that sort of margin by the next paper in Nature.

Dangers depend on the current and future temperatures, not opinions about proxies for 19th century temperatures and the IPCC has diverted the debate about what future temperature  should  be avoided to an argument about the temperature in 1850.
