I am always happy to amuse. Calvin and Hobbes is one of my favorite comics.

I had a friend in visit yesterday. He likes to see himself as a neutral wrt AGW but he is more (my opinion) on denialist side. I showed him SkepticalScience site as the place where he can read more about "arguments" he use.
I don't have time for that, he said.

I showed him Petition, he responded with a curse.

I showed him this topic and he asked: When there is no metric, 'magic' enters - what does that mean?

Being aware that AGW stuff is not gonna work with him I took different approach:

Many employers gets salary based on a measure of their efficiency.
He agreed.

We have many statistics/metrics for racing horses, and sport in general,
which helps one to choose his favorite.
He agreed.

Stock exchange, similarly...
He agreed.

Politicians, what we have about them, I asked.
Silence.

I showed my rant then,
and after exchange of high fives we continued browsing youtube for some music.

Some issues are so complex that "Fuzzy Math" is the only way to create metrics.  I spent a good deal of time working as a Six Sigma Expert (Raytheon's equivalent of the industry standard Blackbelt).  Metrics that show improvements in production or engineering labs are reasonably straightforward.  Working on process improvements for Program Management, Business Development or Proposal Development, where I spent 80% of my time, require extremely creative metrics to quantify success.

It's rather difficult to tell a Vice President that you just saved him/her $5,000,000 be preventing him from making a stupid mistake.  That requires the creation of spreadsheets that showed because of his leadership and a dedicated team of professionals, he was able to improve the company's bottom line by $10,000,000.  For which his/her bonus would increase another $75K/year and if I was lucky I'd get another piece of paper to hang on the wall and an invitation to a BBQ.

While the "Deniers" are complaining about spending their children's money trying to combat AGW/CC, I think the plausible metric should be:

For every $1,000 you spend now combatting AGW/CC:

You will save your children $10,000
You will save your grandchildren $1,000,000

If you do nothing, there will be NO great grandchildren!
