You need to track down the BBC Horizon episode 'Assault on the Male' from 1993 ......... just as with Climate change we have known the costs of our way of living for many years but 'Industry' told us it was the only way we could enjoy our modern 'luxuries' so we made the faustian bargain that appears to have robbed our children of of any chance of enjoying the lives we have lead?

I will certainly work in a apple field treated with "*cides" this september, and I am sure it will affect me and all the workers, especially if we do not put some protections, long sleaves, gloves and googles.

Change the chemicals but also the way we treat people and the way we use our urine. (separated dry toilets)

You can also stop making some garbages :
- by avoiding the supermarket stuff where everything is packaged with the same volume of plastics.
- recycling paper, metal, glass, food (including bones and orange's peel)(in your garden or on the outside of your appartment)
- buying and storing bigger quantities
- buying locally and organic.
...

Laurent, I thought you might like to look here.

 http://www.dailymail.co.uk/home/moslive/article-1350811/In-China-true-cost-Britains-clean-green-wind-power-experiment-Pollution-disastrous-scale.html

The Chinese seem to work on the principle that you build the business first and worry about the pollution later. There are far too many examples of environments toxic to life that are being lived in by human beings in China. Sooner or later there will be a humanitarian disaster - its inevitable

Mark :
Sad as it is, it does tell us that the green busyness is a myth if we do not take care of the whole industrial process through EROI but also by calculating the quantity of green house gazes generated and all sort of environmental regulations. Our countries have delocalized to have cheaper products and get a higher margin but price should not be the sole reference. I am for some strong regulations and national protection of the markets. Also, the best energy is the one we do not use (negawatts), the price of the energy should reflect the true cost of decontamination for CO2 and everything...Is that possible ? I wonder...

You see I'm stuck Laurent - I really dont believe that the current warming is out of the ordinary and I also dont think that CO2 will reach harmful levels for a very long time. I know that may set us apart - but i do respect anyones position or right to an opinion, so I hope my views dont cause a problem!!

Having said that there is every reason to manage what we do to everybodies benefit. There is no point in preaching to people who have lung diseases due to their wood/dung fires (as an example) when we have clean efficient energy for our own use....... it is important that they learn to live by the standards that we do not the standards we choose to impose on them.

There is no excuse for rapidly expanding and rich countries to pollute the environment in such a way that large numbers of people or even the globe itself are compromised and that is where my anger with the modern world lies. CO2 is of great benefit to a massively overpopulated world (in my opinion as an agriculturalist), losing coastline and land mass to the sea may be  a step back for mankind, but at our rate of expansion is inevitable at some point no matter what we do - at least crops will grow at their maximum efficiency to feed the masses.

Of far greater worry is the loss of life due to poverty and pollution and the western world has a lot to answer for on that one. Whilst we throw trillions of dollars at fairly useless climate models, inefficient windfarms and expensive talking shops, we conciously neglect the poorest people. To me that is far more unforgiveable.

I think the world is a very sad place - especially Africa - if we were to help them improve their standard of living - only then will they show concern for our collective future.

I believe the world will find its own balance - with or without us. But balance as humans would be a good starting point

An underwater Chernobyl?

This isn't really news but the Moscow Times article pulls together concerns about rusting Russian nuclear subs etc left to rot at the bottom of Arctic waters. They need to be raised and dealt with securely before significant radioactive leakage occurs.

Theo Colborn is dead, I didn't know her before this morning but her message is interesting.

http://endocrinedisruption.org/assets/media/documents/FFC%20Nov%2014%202014.pdf

Quote
If you ever had the chance to meet her, even once, you knew Theo Colborn. She didn’t have a single hidden agenda. Her commitment to uncovering the truth was out there for the world to see.

For nearly 30 years she dedicated herself to revealing the dangers of endocrine disrupting chemicals to wildlife and humans. More recently she alerted us all to the threats posed by chemicals associated with oil and gas development. She wove the two together beautifully in her statement The Fossil Fuel Connection, which she worked on until the day she died.

Theo’s visionary leadership and passion shone most brilliantly when she made direct connections between new ideas, scientists whose work confirmed them, impacted individuals, and people in positions to change what needed changing. She will be remembered for many generations to come, generations that she worked tirelessly to protect.

Theo often feared that we had already passed the tipping point — that our intelligence and compassion had been so compromised by endocrine disruptors that we could no longer think our way out of the crises we had created.

As the living embodiment of her legacy, we at TEDX say, “No. It is not too late. There are people out there who ‘get it’ and who care — a lot of people — and we won’t let you down Theo.”

— From the Staff and Board of Directors of TEDX
