Maps & photos of Sep 16/18 2012?
« on: August 22, 2014, 03:56:31 AM »
Amazingly, the image most commonly traded over the Interwebs for the record low ice of 2012 is from August, not September. Therefore I figured I'd start this thread, to look for and gather maps, sat images, graphs and composites, from the record low Arctic sea ice day of September 16th (extent) and 18th (volume). Please help and contribute!

PIOMAS grid box effective thickness on 18 June 2012. (While PIOMAS don't do ongoing daily volume, they have provided daily grid box effective thickness binary files)

For completeness: Regional volume in cubic km.
Total   3682.42989
Other   0.000541744 - other ocean not covered by regions - see note below.
Okhotsk   0
Bering   0
Beaufort   0.001693304
Chukchi   0.000133879
ESS   1.32491E-05
Laptev   0.086912058
Kara   0.042080379
Barents   0.071038969
Greenland   160.4010704
Central   3487.715933
CAA   27.39387241
Baffin   6.712163276
Hudson   0.004437706
GStLw   0

Note that in PIOMAS, due to subgrid parameterisation, there are areas shown as full coverage very thin ice that are really the model's grid box average thickness for sparse floes. There are also errant grid boxes with ice that do not contain ice in reality (e.g. Alaskan coast). To get around this PIOMAS team neglect ice below 15cm thick when calculating thickness. However as this is not done in calculation of total volume I have not done this in the above plot.
