« on: April 09, 2021, 12:40:45 AM »no commentary on it yet , but every forecast for days has been predicting a Northerly storm over the Greenland sea .. many forecasts have had a 100hpa differential across the region . with temps set to plunge , I am preparing for the icy blast here in N.I. b.c.
Exciting times since ,, including some beautiful dry snow here and tomorrow a return of the chill, some snow maybe and -5'C to follow , not ideal in April . no plums etc ...
... while in the Greenland Sea a lot of ice has moved 100-120 km S in the last 7 days . The land fast ice is being scoured off the coast , i wouldn't be surprised if there were to be a build up of sea ice on the N. shore of Iceland . The nearest strand is only 50km away today .
Thankfully the forecast is a little less threatening to the Atlantic front tonight in the mid-range at least .. b.c,

Indeed Espen , all the way to Beaufort there is a significant crack , mostly @ 10km wide and up to 20km in places . It has opened largely in the last 4 days . Worldview has a great view of the whole today ...

The next week's animation should be interesting . The low complex N. of Norway seems destined to slowly move to the central Arctic , while high pressure is maintained over G'land and north Canada . This should increase the crackopalypse already apparent from Fram to beyond the pole as the winds remain strong across the region .
Fram export has been low all winter as Wip's graph on the piomass thread today shows . This is changing fast .. a block of ice I've been following between 84 and 85 north has moved 45 km toward fram in the last 48 hours . In 10 days it and a lot more besides could already be in the Greenland sea on the way to early oblivion .

..or maybe it was a demonstration of how good the model is .. GFS seems to have been remarkably accurate and early in it's forecast . I have enjoyed following the weather and this thread .. thanx folks .

.. along with the ridiculously high pressure , the G'land plateau has 2m temps below -40'C and 850hpa temp anomalies > 24'C over a huge area . I've never seen a present/forecast like it ... these temps seem the lowest I've seen over G'land in the last 10 years .
And downwind it looks like the worst by-passes N.I. with snow making it to Greece and Turkey .

Freegrass and his drunken outbursts (and his sober ones) are what has no place here . His assaults on religion are not as big a problem as his personal attacks on fellow posters and mods (excepting Oren) . It seems that protecting posters like FG is the real problem . As you well know Oren , I have protested his continued presence every time he launches another attack , but its rinse and repeat .. and further protect .
It has been made clear to me that a number of the departed left 'cause Freegrass remains .
My observation on micromanagement did not relate to Blumenkraft .
If this forum is determined to protect the Freegrasses and not the Nannings and Blumenkrafts then moderation is pointless . Are HHI and the Walrus really a greater threat to it's stability than FG ?

... or maybe less obese people are smarter ? Having seen the success of community health action in india and S of the Sahara , building on what they learned in previous pan/epidemics . Kerala in S. India for example has a well recorded death rate 1/15th that of the UK (and no major lockdowns) . They did not have to start with 'stupid' in charge as we did here in the UK and USA . New variants and vaccine queue jumping may soon change things , but so far the 3rd world is showing the 1st world the way .. b.c.

A massive sandstorm has combined with already high air pollution to turn the skies in Beijing an eerie orange, and send some air quality measurements off the charts.
Air quality indexes recorded a “hazardous” 999 rating on Monday as commuters travelled to work through the thick, dark air across China’s capital and further west.
Chinese meteorological authorities issued its second highest alert level shortly before 7.30am, staying in place until midday. A broader warning for sand and dust blowing in from the western desert regions was put in effect until Tuesday morning.
When Beijing’s realtime air quality index (AQI) showed a reading of 999, Tokyo recorded 42, Sydney 17 and New York 26. Hong Kong and Taiwan recorded “moderate” readings of 66 and 87, respectively.
Levels of PM2.5, the small air pollution particles that infiltrate the lungs, were recorded above 600 micrograms in many parts of the city, reaching a 24-hour average of 200 before midday. The World Health Organization recommends average daily concentrations of just 25.
The sandstorm blown in from the desert stretching into Inner Mongolia saw concentrations of the larger PM10 particles surpass 8,000 micrograms according to state media.

State media reported at least 341 people were reported missing in neighbouring Mongolia, which was also hit by sandstorms, and flights were grounded out of Hohhot in inner Mongolia.
On social media several people shared screenshots of other air quality indexes showed readings of more than 9,000, officially “beyond index”.
Some residents in Ningxia, in China’s west, said they woke up in the middle of the night feeling as though they couldn’t breathe. One commenter on Weibo joked that they felt like they needed to learn how to ride a camel.
Sandstorms are relatively common at this time of year, and usually attributed to winds blowing across the Gobi desert, but long-term residents said they had not seen one of this severity in years.
Large-scale deforestation is also considered a factor in the spring dust storms, and China has been trying to reforest and restore the ecology of the region in order to limit how much sand is blown into the capital.
Beijing has planted a “great green wall” of trees to trap incoming dust, and tried to create air corridors that channel the wind and allow sand and other pollutants to pass through more quickly.
Beijing and surrounding regions have been suffering from high levels of pollution in recent weeks, with the city shrouded in smog during the national session of parliament which began earlier this month.
Tangshan, China’s top steelmaking city and a major source of pollution in Beijing and Hebei, said on Saturday it would punish local enterprises for failing to carry out emergency anti-smog measures.

I went out for a little star gazing last night . first I see a satellite traversing NW-SE . A minute later 2 pass the N end of Orion heading NE . These are followed by 4 more in the next 2 minutes , all on the same track .. the night sky is getting busy .. b.c.

I do find it strange that while we all agree that volume is the best measure , we ignore what it says about where we are in the freeze/melt cycle . Peak volume is probably 2 or 3 months away , at which time melt finally exceeds freeze .. Neither melt or freeze are seasonal in that both are always ongoing , unless we have passed the point where that is true , yet twice a year excitement builds . Are the Inuit and the polar bears awaiting the news with bated breath ? AS IF ! b.c.

regarding the dmi80 graph .. it is tracking perfectly the (stratospheric) rise this time in 2018 that coincided with the first great opening N. of Greenland . Deja vu ?
