Title: Login broken [update: should be fixed now]
Post by: temp1 on September 13, 2017, 05:27:33 AM
This is the user formerly known as sidd on this forum. Login is broken, have not been able to login for a few days, error message tells me that session has timed out, as logicmanpatrick and other pointed out on the typepad blog.

Hi sidd,

I have notified DungeonMaster. I'm sure he'll look into it asap. Sorry for the inconvenience.

I have the same thing - at least when I try to log in from the main page.

Clicking through to the actual login page first, that works though.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I would never have thought of that.  I think my geek cred just went down: but yours just went up.

Similar.  The top left login dnw (does not work).  However the lower middle login does work.  No problems with logout.  No other glitches or major bugs noted.

As above, the login page works, the main login does not...

remove the "temp1" account
Won't that also kill this thread?

Good question, brigantine!  ;D

I might try that tomorrow, after saving all the comments here. Exciting!  ;)

Looks like the problem is with the login boxes at the top. If you go to the login link from the main page, the boxes on top of the resulting page also deny login with the timeout error. One needs to use the boxes lower down in the login page for it to work. Mebbe broken auto added header code?

i would look deeper but i have six hundred miles of road ahead of me.

The ASIF attracts brilliant minds.  This topic keeps bouncing to the top of recent comments.  Having two login options is not needed.  Why not just delete one.

AAAAGH ! NO! Not that one, the other one!   ;D

I could delete sidd's temporary account (temp1) without killing the thread. So I did.

Thanks for deleting that account.

I have had a bit more time to look at the issue, and i see no difference between the broken login attempt and the working one except that a field is defined as

form id="guest_form" in the broken case, but form id="frmLogin" in the working one. All else incuding the form action, the field names and the hash passed seem the same. I dunno if this helps debug but perhaps it might.

One last thought is that the error message states that the session has expired. Might the broken form with form id="guest_form"  invoke a time comparison that fails, yet one that succeeds when form id ="frmLogin" ?

Hunh.  Thought it was just me...  :o

A couple weeks ago, one morning I got a (405?) error trying to access the forum (server not found, or something).

Sept. 8, I kept getting "Forbidden - You don't have permission to access / on this server".

And since last night, the "your session timed out while posting" message.

Got in now using the lower login screen, as others have described.  At least persistence pays off!

Sigmetnow:  I tried to join in with those who were thanking you for your tremendous input here, but my comment got buried in an avalanche of messages.  So:thank you!

As you said: persistence pays off.  ;D

Neven, would you post a link to this thread somewhere prominent on your blog and the fron page of this forum ? I notice a bunch of regulars have not posted in some time.

Perhaps make this thread sticky until the bug is sorted?

And/or, we keep posting items in this thread often enough to keep it in the Recent Posts lists.  That's how I found it!

I've set the topic sticky and put an addendum on top of the latest ASIB blog post. I'll be travelling for the next two-three days, but once I'm back home, I'll ask DungeonMaster again about this.

Thanks again for finding the workaround and possible causes.

Trying to make a more obnoxious title in the Recent Posts list, to catch people's attention.

The story so far: the main logon screen isn't working -- but if you use the secondary one (the one you get when you have an invalid userid or password;  or the other Login screen), they will work OK.

Good morning.

Neven is traveling for a few days.  So we're on our own until Dungeonmaster waves his magic wand.

In the meantime... PARTY!!! ;D

Okay, I'm back (behave, gentlemen), and I've asked DungeonMaster to look at the issue.

Ouch sorry guys, I hadn't realized that it was that bad !

The latest update introduced a new security mechanism which was not applied in the slightly modified themes we use here. As a result it went broke...

I think it is fixed now - please tell me if not yet...

For reference: https://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=553884.msg3925847#msg3925847 (https://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=553884.msg3925847#msg3925847)

And by the way I switched the whole forum to https only mode (latest update allows this), I hope it breaks nothing!
