Title: Will China and India Sink Us?
Post by: Bob Wallace on February 23, 2013, 04:25:35 AM
Both countries had a good 2012 in terms of installing additional solar generation.

China was number one in the world with 75 new sites for a total of 1,963 MW capacity.  They installed 34% of all new solar last year.

India was a respectable number four in terms of MW installed, following Germany and the US.

China has set a goal of having 35 GW of solar on line by 2015.  In 2013 they expect to install a 10 GW chunk of that 35.  China also expects to install 18 additional GW of wind in 2013.

China is struggling right now with transmission problems which is causing wind installers to move to some lower wind sites in order to take advantage of usable lines.

"“China has planned the world’s most ambitious power line upgrade to handle the twin problems of rising load growth in population centers and increasing supplies of energy — both coal and wind — from remote regions in the north and west of China,” according to the report.

China’s 750,000-kilometer grid is the world’s biggest. The U.S. grid is second at 600,000 kilometers. Eleven of the planned nineteen new ultra high voltage (UHV) AC and DC lines, scheduled for completion in 2014, are designed to relieve curtailment in the northern wind power bases. The new additions would give China the world’s longest UHV DC system."

Here's a report on China's wind - a lot of good information....
