This is a very, very dumb video from the denialist-fringe:

Let's see what he says after the next record low.. :o

Greenland and Arctic Circle / Epiq Sermia / West Greenland
« on: May 04, 2016, 10:36:55 AM »
Interesting, this S-1a image shows concentric waves close to the calving front that must have been generated by a small calving event at the time of the imaging.

For the record, here are links to some blogposts he has written recently basically arguing that the recent reduction of Arctic Sea Ice is a scam:

This thread is for discussing S-1 geocoding issues

Antarctica / S-1 Antarctica-campaign has started
« on: May 22, 2015, 03:07:59 PM »
A new campaign in Antarctica has started in Cycle 49, i.e. yesterday. AP and parts of WAIS will be covered in IW-mode (~10m pixel size) in HH-polarization.

Greenland and Arctic Circle / New datasets available over Greenland
« on: April 21, 2015, 01:39:32 PM »
The ESA CCI Ice Sheets Greenland - project has released some data products for download:

The data products include the following parameters:

SEC = Surface Elevation Change
IV = Ice Velocity
CFL = Calving Front Location
GLL = Grounding Line Location

Greenland and Arctic Circle / Prince of Wales Icefield

Here's a view of the Prince of Wales Icefield on Ellesmere Island. Sentinel-1 SAR 17.1.2015 & 29.1.2015. R = InSAR coherence G = B = Interferogram intensity. ~550 Megapixels!

Greenland and Arctic Circle / S-1 Greenland campaign starting 16.1.2015
« on: January 15, 2015, 12:43:50 PM »
ESA:s S-1 acquisition campaign over Greenland is starting tomorrow. The plan is to cover the whole Greenland in IW-mode from both ascending and descending orbits in this 12-day cycle, and to repeat these acquisitions for the two following cycles. If everything goes well we will have ascending and descending image triplets covering the whole Greenland.

All data will be processed into SLC and GRDH and will be placed available on scihub. As scihub is a rolling archive, please grab the data before it will be lost..

The operations and data provision are being ramped up. At the moment there are many SAR images over the arctic sea ice available on the data portal for science:

..unfortunately the data is not currently being added as it has been acquired but this should be happening soon..

Arctic background / Ice-age inception?
« on: June 02, 2014, 10:27:48 AM »
What do you think about the idea that greenhouse gases might stop the Earth from going into the next ice-age? This climate-skeptic blog links to a couple of interesting scientific papers:

What do you think about the idea, is there a consensus about these matters between scientists?

Arctic sea ice / EUMETSAT Sea Ice products?
« on: August 24, 2013, 12:07:51 PM »

I did not see Eumetsat sea ice products in the Daily Graphs page, I think some of them should add value:

I think ASCAT should be used more in daily analysis, after all it images through clouds, albeit at a rather low resolution.

edit: here's the 12.5km product from today from KNMI:

Antarctica / Active destabilization of WAIS?
« on: March 01, 2013, 10:38:07 AM »
I know this is a scenario from a Bond-film but I've been wondering about the following:

- Would it be possible to destabilize WAIS (at least partly) and cause an acceleration of SLR with a couple of well places nukes?

- Penetrator-missiles could place the nukes at the rock-ice interface at suitable locations upstream of the grounding lines of the Pine Island and Thwaites glaciers.

- Could the ice-stream recover balance after this insult or would this trigger dynamic instabilities and destabilization?
