Arghhhhh I wanted to grab a screen capture at 100M but I fall asleep...

This one will do!

Thank you, all contributors and viewers!

Let's hope they can't find one can navigate all the way through! Sat images can be misleading...

The forum / Re: Backup
« on: August 24, 2019, 12:03:05 AM »
About the server being "hereby closed" by the US: no way this can happen, there is not ONE criminal topic here (I'm a tech guy AND a lawyer). I'd rather erase the forum than having anything illegal to French law. Our tribunals and government are quite good at being slow, which leaves plenty of time; and we're not too bad at resisting fascism either.

The forum / Re: Backup
« on: August 23, 2019, 11:55:17 PM »
About restoring posts from one user: we'd have to reload a "good" backup on a second server, extract posts, copy the current server, update all related posts to test - then, try to figure out why the damn procedure didn't work out, shout Eureka, apply. Then apply confidently on the real production server where it will not work on first nor second try.
Piece of cake  ;D
Now we just have to wait 10 minutes before we get the opportunity to put this theory at test!

Mmmhhh I don't know of any system change (session...) on the server... and I didn't experience anything like this on my iphone, I'm just somehow logged in forever...
I'm afraid we won't know what happened if it can't be reproduced... but thank you for your nice report!

It's probably coming from a referral on other website...
A VERY unusual thing on this forum is that, by design, we have NOT installed Google Analytics or any tracking cookies (yet?). So we just can't know where people come from, the bounce rate, and many other such things. This may change... or not!

Neven, what do you think about having some more stats / installing Analytics ? By my work as Privacy consultant I tend to avoid this, but well it's sooo ubiquitous... and, what are your views on this, dear members?

Sorry to bother new users with these questions - we have to renew and harden them when the bots find a way in - there can be more than 50 bots finding their way per day when the questions are too simple / too old... And by now the easy questions we could ask some years ago don't stop these damn bots anymore!

Wow, it's been a looong time without an arctic expedition - and this one will be nice to watch!

Mike and Borge are not exactly beginners in this area...

As there's no more ice on the fringes, they'll sail North from Alaska to the 85th, then ski, go to the Pole, then jump back on the boat around Spitzbergen... that's quite a plan!!

https://www.mikehorn.com/northpolecrossing/ has it all, and a map!

(and it's nice to post again!)

Ouch, I thought I had answered.

I don't really see the point of having an onion address, but "the customer is always right" so I agree to try and set it up!

I gave a look at some how-tos perform this, but couldn't find a simple guide... do you Readers have links to share?

And thanks for your posts!

Nay Sir, here I just suggested about changing the Forum's theme you use when you browse from your phone!!

The forum / Using your smartphone? Switch to Theme Exodus!
« on: September 26, 2017, 08:58:46 PM »
If you mainly read the Forum, and occasionally reply, from your phone or tablet, you'll love Exodus theme!

Unfortunately it doesn't work perfectly from a "regular" browser (the top image is toooo small)... but for the casual lurker (me!) it's perfect.

Enjoy!

No idea if there is any significance to this but new upon visiting this am. Continued on without incident but it might discourage outside visitors.
Hmm that looks like an Opera problem. Actually the server has 2 certificates, 1st one for the domain, 2nd for the provider. See https://www.ssllabs.com/ssltest/analyze.html?d=forum.arctic-sea-ice.net to check validity.
Opera complains at second... I think this won't create any real trouble; and the main thing is that all data, logins... are protected.

The forum / Re: https broken
« on: September 21, 2017, 03:07:39 AM »
So:
- I installed a real certificate
- switched the whole forum to https... no more http, and this should also help with uploading images (unless the server is now really toooo busy?) and indexing through search engines...

Update: I uploaded a 5mb photo right now, it was fast.

Please follow-up if you still encounter issues.

The forum / Re: Login broken
« on: September 21, 2017, 03:00:02 AM »
Ouch sorry guys, I hadn't realized that it was that bad !

The latest update introduced a new security mechanism which was not applied in the slightly modified themes we use here. As a result it went broke...

I think it is fixed now - please tell me if not yet...

For reference: https://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=553884.msg3925847#msg3925847

And by the way I switched the whole forum to https only mode (latest update allows this), I hope it breaks nothing!

The forum / Re: Backup
« on: September 21, 2017, 12:30:55 AM »
We have hourly static backups of the whole server on a remote machine. And we have a hourly dump of the database (300mb) every hour, plus 30 days - on main server and on the remote server. I think we also have a daily backup on a 3rd server on a 2nd hosting company, I have to check that one.
All servers in Europe in nice companies - no way I would put those data on an US company with all the cops and spies around (my day job is IT security and privacy).

I'll be glad to answer any other question.

Hi all,

I just installed the latest version of code, it should allow https run in a much smoother way.

Also, the Forum now has it's own official ssl certificate, so this will also help a lot!

Enjoy!

Arctic sea ice / Re: I'm updating the ASIG next week. Any tips?
« on: January 05, 2017, 07:51:32 AM »
I think that Tenney had some suggestions some weeks ago?

And: I probably can program a server to catch still pictures from more websites as necessary... And archive them if necessary. We already have this for some images.

And: it would be nice if we can watch the ASIG properly from an iphone - it used to work, then got broken at some time.

Hi,

Sorry for not noticing your call for help before.

I have no real idea about what might happen - are you using the forum from your company office (=possibly behind a strong firewall or proxy), or at home with a standard, basic connexion?

Anyway, it's only useful to use httpS during login, while entering your password, so it can't be stolen; after you're connected, you can use http only, this creates no security issue.

Arctic sea ice / Re: The 2016 melting season
« on: May 18, 2016, 07:59:46 PM »
Could we have a free-for-all debating sticky thread? The ability to argue seperate points is valuable for some people, as is of course the more data oriented nature of this one. The Arctic melting season provokes both kinds of response.

Hi all posters,

As Neven, who usually moderates the forum, isn't there at the moment, I'm going to apply this request and create such an "Open Thread" (as RealClimate does). I'll probably move next out-of-topic posts there, but of course it would be much better if members write there directly.

Thank you for your attention.

Arctic sea ice / Re: The 2016 melting season

Please stick to the topic, dear guests... I think that we have numerous other posts on the Forum to discuss those related subjects, and we would prefer to keep this one for the Melting Season - for all the people who read this Forum...
Thank you!

Arctic sea ice / Re: The 2016 melting season

AND if we look at MASIE for 2012 05 15 and then look at 2016 05 15 the difference is 882800 sq km less ice this year.
If things do not change we are in for a rollercoaster of a year.

Deja Vu all over again:  On 17 May 2015, jdallen wrote: "If this pans out and continues as some models are suggesting, in a couple of months, Wadhams May be saying "I told you so" to all of us."  'Course, 2015 was one of the top three roller coaster rides...

[On 16 May 2015, jdallen posted detail photos of Kara, ESS, and Hudson.  I wonder if I can figure out how to find this year's corresponding images.]

And if it was too easy to compute the final numbers, with perfect formulas and no alea, it would be no fun watching, would it be?

Policy and solutions / Re: Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS)
« on: May 02, 2016, 11:39:59 PM »
If I remember correctly, all this buzz around CCS was created by the coal industry during Bush's presidency, to spread the idea that science-to-come would find tech solutions "to this CO2 thing", when they denied it was a problem. It appeared around the "clean coal" themes they tried to sell us - basically, an other strategy to deny coal and oil responsability and to delay any action. But CS was never meant to work, just to buy more time to emit while making money.

Arctic sea ice / Re: Barneo 2016
« on: April 15, 2016, 11:45:47 PM »
I've been watching Barneo since they began, and they've been having more and more problems finding good ice every year.

Before Barneo I loved to read blogs about ski expeditions to / from the pole every summer... but now they're over, it's impossible to travel on ice any more  :(

I think that, even anecdotal, those events give a good summary of what's happening now - and how fast it is...

David, the correlation between alcohol consumption and climate change denial is statistically insignificant.

True, but the correlation between right-wing Kool Aid consumption and climate change denial is practically perfect :o

Kool-aid theory was treated by Professor Inferno as soon as 2012: http://denialdepot.blogspot.com/2012/10/a-new-theory-of-climate.html

We miss you, Professor.
