It has somewhat belatedly come to my attention that to celebrate its 350th anniversary the Royal Society is providing free access to the content of all its journals until the end of March 2015. Read all about it at:
https://royalsociety.org/publishing350/
The oldest Arctic sea ice article I can find dates from 1878:
Observations on Arctic Sea-Water and Ice
by Staff Surgeon Edward L. Moss, M.D., R.N., late of H.M.S. Alert. Communicated by Sir George Nares, Captain, R.N., K.C.B., F.R.S.

Thanks, I just downloaded the following two old Philosophical Transitions articles:
Naomi E. Vaughan , Timothy M. Lenton, (2012), "Interactions between reducing CO2 emissions, CO2 removal and solar radiation management", Philosophical Transactions A, DOI: 10.1098/rsta.2012.0188
