Links to a number of sea ice pages
« on: June 26, 2015, 01:41:48 PM »
While there is a lot of information to access I think it would be proper to launch a number of links to the various numbers of pages that are surveiling the sea ice in Arctic. all of these agencies have various methods to determine the sea ice extent, sea ice area, sea ice thickness, volume etc.

National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC):
http://nsidc.org/arcticseaicenews/ (main page)
http://nsidc.org/arcticseaicenews/charctic-interactive-sea-ice-graph/ (compare current year with others)

University of Bremen (UiB):
http://www.iup.uni-bremen.de:8084/amsr2/ (main page)
http://www.iup.uni-bremen.de:8084/amsr2data/asi_daygrid_swath/n6250/ (Data archive back to 2012)
http://www.iup.uni-bremen.de:8084/databrowser.html#tab=tabs-browser&day=25&month=5&year=2015&img={%22image%22:%22image-1%22,%22sensor%22:%22AMSR_ICE%22,%22color%22:false,%22region%22:%22BeaufortArcticArchipelago/%22} This one is really good as you can choose concentration for different regions and zoom too! :D

Nansen Environmental  & Remote Sensing Center:
http://arctic-roos.org/ (main page)
http://arctic-roos.org/observations (Data from satellites, sea ice conc, area and extent numbers and a lot more!)
http://arctic-roos.org/observations/ice-area-and-extent-in-arctic For ex. here is SIE and SIA estimations.
http://arctic-roos.org/forecast (link to different forecasting systems - explore for yourself!)

From NERSC I found this link with a lot of useful parameters, for ex ice thickness:
http://bulletin.mercator-ocean.fr/en/PSY4#2/62.6/-85.1
http://bulletin.mercator-ocean.fr/en/PSY4#4/61.90/-133.33

What this one is good for I can't find out, perhaps some one else can do a better job and understand how to get good maps..

Other interesting links from NERSC:
http://wms.met.no/icechart/

From DMI:
http://ocean.dmi.dk/arctic/index.uk.php
http://ocean.dmi.dk/arctic/icethickness/thk.uk.php (also with volume estimation)
http://ocean.dmi.dk/anim/index.uk.php
http://ocean.dmi.dk/arctic/morrisjessup.uk.php
http://ocean.dmi.dk/arctic/icecharts_gl_1.uk.php

From Norway MET:
http://polarview.met.no/ (different products, but with archive back to 1998 for Spitzbergen and East Greenland!)

Wipneus png-site:
https://sites.google.com/site/apamsr2/home/pngcby32/

Polar Science Center (PSC):
http://psc.apl.uw.edu/research/projects/arctic-sea-ice-volume-anomaly/

Hope there is something useful to be used in this forum! :)

Best, LMV

There is in fact a much longer list than that, especially since you included an "etc."! Am I allowed to start by blowing my own trumpet? If so:

http://GreatWhiteCon.info/resources/

which does of course reference:

https://sites.google.com/site/arcticseaicegraphs/

Sticking just with "buoys" for the moment, then how about:

Ice Mass Balance Buoys - http://imb.erdc.dren.mil/
O-Buoys - http://obuoy.datatransport.org
Ice Tethered Profilers - http://www.whoi.edu/page.do?pid=20781
Autonomous Ocean Flux Buoys - http://www.oc.nps.edu/~stanton/fluxbuoy/
International Arctic Buoy Programme - http://iabp.apl.washington.edu/maps_daily.html

plus a few more I've no doubt temporarily forgotten about for the moment! An obvious addition to your own list is:

ftp://ftp-projects.zmaw.de/seaice/AMSR2/

There's another long list to be made of "machine readable" information, as well as the "human readable" variety.

Great stuff Jim! :) I'm looking forward to go through your links! :D I see now that I forgot to deliver some link with bouy info.

Yes, that's was my idea with this new topic: a list with different links where one can follow the SIE, SIA, volume etc. Looking forward to see other peoples contribution to this page, for ex, Neven, Wipneus, Chris Reynolds and everyone else! :) It's impossible to remember every site but if we do it together... :)
