Methane Release: Information Required for Article
« on: May 23, 2016, 06:06:39 AM »
Hey everyone,

My name is Justin Arjoon, I'm a long-time lurker of the ASIF. I'd like to ask for your help on an article I'm writing for mainstream consumption. The article is comparing the Holocene extinction with the Permian-Triassic extinction.

I'm aware that there were few-to-no methane clathrates that existed during that time, so I have two questions:

1) Were there any in the two ages preceding?

2) Was there any sort of permafrost analogue to today that could have caused a massive methane release if it melted? If not, what about the preceding ages?

I'm not writing an alarmist article, it is supposed to be as factual as possible without embellishing.

Thank you all for your help!

Justin Arjoon

Justin Arjoon,

Generally we/I have addressed this matter first in the "Hydrogen Sulfide Producing Bacteria in the Ocean" thread and second mixed into our posts on the "Carbon Cycle" thread:

For the "Hydrogen Sulfide Producing Bacteria in the Ocean" see:

&

For the "Carbon Cycle" Replies #: 290, 291, 297, 299, see:

Thank you for the information. I was actually hoping for some opinions from any knowledgeable individuals in the field.

But I do appreciate being pointed in the right direction.

Justin

You might ask Dr. Natalia Shakhova what is unique about the present situation, and maybe how it compares with the past? This would apply at least to the shallow underwater permafrost.
