republicans love big government. The military, the war on drugs, congressional pork and immigration are the clearest example. They only use the "big government" label for things they don't like.

Multiple likes for the big poster!  I have thoughts on 'let the free market take care of X'.  Lots of Xs out there.  Hmm. Traffic lights?  If we needed them the free market would install them at intersections.  Right?

How about Trump lets the free market take care of elections?  What's that you say, he already did?  Surely not.   ;D

Kelly has let Trump know that he is not going to take Trump's abuse anymore.  Maybe all of Team Trump's retired generals can bludgeon Trump into minding his p's and q's:

If we want to look for the roots of Trump's (Mr. "I know all the best words") success at populist antiestablishmentarianism, we can trace them back to Ronald Reagan.  This populist behavior will make it very difficult for governments to fight climate change and its consequences (just look at Houston):
Tracing what passes for Republican Thinking to Reaganism is a good place to start.

From ancient Sumerian times until Ronald, the government's mandate had been to stand up for widows, orphans and the poor, against the powerful and wealthy that would otherwise steal what little they had.

Suddenly Ronald brought us government that would save the very rich from the grasping clutches of the very poor - and he convinced the poorest and least educated to join his crusade!

Orwellian revisions of even recent history were undertaken on a massive scale, and yesterday's lies became today's truths. Both parties parroted his distortions and the media fed it to us every night at 6.

The poor aren't unlucky, they're lazy.
The poor aren't deserving, they're leaches.
Poor Americans aren't our responsibility, they're a burden to be shirked.
The crime of poverty is perpetrated by the poor.

Close the schools and open more prisons.
Cut welfare and build up the military.

Cut taxes and spend more.
Debt doesn't mean anything.

After almost 40 years of propaganda very few remember what used to pass for truth.

Christ's basic teaching wasn't ever man for himself.
The Russian Empire, evil or otherwise, ended in 1917.
Reagan never got any close to the front lines than Riverside California.

Propaganda has always been part of the powerful to rule over the masses. It typically is combined with scape-goating and it didn't start with Ronald Reagan.

Just remember how Hitler used propaganda to convincing the people of Germany that his policy was one of "national socialism" (for the people), and that the jews we to blame for the misery.

Modern Republican propaganda has the same concept : They claim that free market benefits the people, and the Democrats are to blame for the problems.

Russian propaganda goes one step further and blames the 'West' for not just Russian misery, but even the violence that Russia itself imposes on its neighbors.

In the US, Republican propaganda goes via Fox News, in Russia via RT and Sputnik and considering that billionaires are now ruling both the Kremlin and the White house, it seems that propaganda works.

Rob
Propaganda of course predates Reagan, what he did was to alter the narrative.
Instead of pretending that the government was the helper of the downtrodden, Reagan pretended that the government was the enemy of the same.

It was decades before his collusion with Saudi Royalty to tank oil prices became known, and by that time his own intellectual capacities had fallen lower than crude oil's price. If a president deserved to be booted for mental deficiency, Reagan leads that list.

Germany and Hollywood brought the world modern propaganda. Berlin dropped out, but TV more than picked up the slack. Most that heard Nixon debate Kennedy thought that Nixon won. Those that viewed it sided with Kennedy. - Is this the way to chose the world's leaders?

I'd argue that Republican propaganda tends to scapegoat minority's within the country. The Irish, Catholics, Mexicans and of course the Blacks have all had their time. Only very recently have Democrats begun domestic scapegoating, Trump's "Deplorable's" had been Bill's Bubba Vote.

Externally America's xenophobia is ubiquitous. If it isn't the British or the Spanish or the French or the Germans or the ... damn, it's hard to find a country that America hasn't been at war with at one time or another.  The point I suppose is that the US of A has a very long history of pointing elsewhere when asked where the blame lies. Reagan didn't begin this, but he took it to a new level in Grenada.

Fortunately here in Canada we're spared Faux News. We've had our own problems with Harper and Ford, but at the moment all is quiet on your northern front.

I have mentioned before that there are two useful books and some accessible video of a man called Ellul. The books are called "Propaganda" and "The Techonological Society." I do not recall the translator and i am away at the moment, so i cannot give ISBN

One question comes to mind in light of Elluls's work is:

Only Republican and Russian propaganda?  What of Democratic propaganda ?

Imagine.....only 7+ months into his term....and Donnie has:

1). Tried to do anything he could to speed up global warming
2).  Done everything he can to make polluting the US as easy as possible
3).  Shown that he is a racist....and will play to his racist base every chance he can
4).  Shown an inability to speak coherently....put together a full sentance in English...and has continually shown the ability to say the wrong thing at the wrong time.
5).  An inability to show compassion
6).  An inability to study and learn about the important topics of the day.

Imagine anyone foolish enough to support someone like Donnie.  Someone would have to be pretty pathetic themselves.

I wonder when bigot Jeff is going to start putting up the "Whites only" signs at the restaurants?

How do you use the office of President to maximise financial gains for yourself and your mega-rich friends?

Step 1 -
recognise that the military-industrial complex depends heavily on the fossil fuel aka petrochemical industries.

Step 2 -
make threats to N. Korea to encourage them to engage in even more sabre-rattling.

Step 3 -
sign military megadeals with the non-nuclear countries which feel threatened by N.Korea.

Step 4 -
get re-elected for having greatly boosted the earnings of the military-industrial complex, creating wealth and jobs and thus "making America great again".

I think Kelly may be the first major cabinet member out.  He won't leave as long as Korean issue is at a ultra heightened level....but he will leave if Korean issue mellows out in the next month or two.  His ethical mind won't take a lot more of lying Donnie.

Nikki Haley is wound up in the Korean issue as well...more than Kelly.   She may leave after Kelly...but again, we're talking months not weeks....and Korea has to settle down considerably.

Donnie and Mnuchin (treasury secretary) have been out lying about US corporate tax rates.

The US does NOT have the highest effective tax rates in the world.  Our effective tax rate is is slightly above the middle of the pack.

The reason it is slightly above the middle of the pack is very simple:  The US spends almost 3 times the amount that China spent on defense in 2016.  We spent 9 times what Russia spent.  In fact.....we spent more on defense than the next 50 countries COMBINED.😳

So the problem isn't the corporate tax rate.  Next time you catch someone lying about this....you need to straighten them out.

An increasingly fractured GOP is subject to leverage by the Democrats:

Title: "Democrats stick it to GOP on debt ceiling"

http://www.politico.com/story/2017/09/06/schumer-and-pelosi-offer-support-for-harvey-aid-and-debt-limit-boost-242376

Extract: "Democratic leaders said Wednesday they'll offer Republican lawmakers and President Donald Trump their votes for a package delivering aid to victims of Hurricane Harvey and raising the debt ceiling only until mid-December. GOP leaders, eager to avoid multiple contentious votes on the debt ceiling, want to raise the debt ceiling through late 2018.

If Republicans go along, it would set up a brutal year-end fiscal cliff. Congressional leaders are expected to extend government funding, which expires Sept. 30, until the end of the year. So government funding and the debt ceiling would both have to be dealt with then.

The short-term debt-limit strategy allows Democrats to say they're not flirting with default but also buys them the time they want to negotiate and use their leverage for other big-ticket items from immigration to government funding. The items mentioned in their Wednesday release — a debt limit hike, government spending, hurricane aid and protection for Dreamers — could in theory be rolled into one giant package later this year, though Democrats are more focused on ensuring that all those measures are bipartisan, according to Democratic aides.

But two debt limit votes would be painful for Republican leaders, who are already pulling teeth to get one increase in the nation's borrowing limit over the finish-line. Trump himself, GOP leadership sources say, will have to get involved to muster enough Republican votes for a single Harvey-debt limit package — and that's assuming every Democrat backs the bill."

This conjunction of an immense military establishment and a large arms industry is new in the American experience. The total influence – economic, political, even spiritual – is felt in every city, every Statehouse, every office of the Federal government. We recognize the imperative need for this development. Yet we must not fail to comprehend its grave implications. Our toil, resources and livelihood are all involved; so is the very structure of our society.

In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.

We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals, so that security and liberty may prosper together.

Hopefully, the retirement of GOP House Representatives Dent & Reichert are "… the leading edge of a series of retirement from …" GOP Representatives is swing districts for the 2018 mid-term election:

Title: "Two things happened this week that should really worry Republicans"

http://www.cnn.com/2017/09/08/politics/charlie-dent-paul-ryan/index.html

Extract: "History suggests that the 2018 election is going to be a tough one for Republicans in Congress. Since 1946, when presidents are above 50% approval, their party loses an average of 14 seats in House in midterms, according to Gallup calculations. But, if a president is below that 50% approval -- and Trump is way below that -- the average seat loss is 36 seats.

Those are daunting numbers -- even without the possibility that Dent and Reichert are the leading edge of a series of retirement from members in swing districts due to increasing feelings of ideological isolation."

From Washington Post

Quote
Kris Kobach’s leap of logic on voter fraud in New Hampshire should be disqualifying

Kobach’s essay would have been troubling enough had it only run with the idea that the 2016 results were uncertain because 5,000 voters voted with out-of-state licenses. But there’s that phrase with which he kicked off his essay: “Now there’s proof.” Now, he wrote, there’s proof “that out-of-staters take advantage of New Hampshire’s same-day registration and head to the Granite State to cast fraudulent votes” — the numbers cited above. They are to proof what Jackson Pollock is to portraits: If you really want to see a face, you’ll see it.

The comments are worth the read.  Try this one:
Quote
And the mentally challenged Trump worshipers will be all over this, as will their hoary lord and master. Because as we all know, all the votes that did not go to Trump were 'fake votes', cast by fake voters and illegal immigrants. I can watch "Ghost Hunters" and expect more reality in one episode than the entire Presidency of Donald Trump so far this year. Anyone who still supports the orange ooze is an utter moron and will probably need a lobotomy just to raise their I.Q. to that of a cockroach.

I see that one of Donnie's biggest fans from FOX....and one of my favorite porn stars on FOX has been fired.  Yes.......I'm afraid Eric Bolling has been axed from FOX.

My guess is that Eric will either land a job pole dancing at a Jersey gentlemens club, OR working for Donnie in his administration.  Both are equally sleazy.  Heck...showing pictures of his "junk" to all the girls at FOX will probably earn him bonus points with Donnie.

Way to go Eric.  So....who's next at FOX to get caught fishing off the company pier?  Sean?

Irma and Harvey lay the costs of climate change denial at Trump’s door

I was going to leave a comment, but comments have closed.

So, Sunday, when most people in the UK lie in, they post an article while most people are asleep and call a halt to comments when they wake up.

Maybe they just couldn't handle the volume of deniers.  Of late there have been fewer and fewer denialistas posting comments there, but today - wow!

While democrats are doing the "legwork" house by house, one face to face reasonable conversation at a time, the deniers have an army of trolls and bots changing the public opinion,  telling blatant lies and using any tool in the book of propaganda to reach millions of people.

Basically, they weaponized free speech.

Robert Reich:
"The Mexican government has rescinded its generous offer to aid in Hurricane Harvey recovery efforts. Officials offered food, generators, and medical aid, but Trump never responded. Nor did Trump offer help to Mexico following the massive 8.1-magnitude earthquake there last Thursday that killed 95 people and injured hundreds. In fact, Trump couldn't even muster a tweet to express condolences.

Once again, Trump has thumbed his nose at one of our closest allies and brought shame on our country. He is no leader; he's an international embarrassment. What do you think?"

It's not Jemele Harris of ESPN that should be fired.  It is Sarah Fake Christian Huckabee and Donald Trump that should be fired for constantly LYING.  Does Sarah even know how to tell the truth?  Does she even know how to LOOK for the truth?

Sarah is a disgrace to democracy.....she is a disgrace to journalists.  And she needs to quit wearing so much makeup.....it isn't hiding her lying ways.

Maybe California will be able to flip the House in the midterm elections:

Title: "California could flip the House, and these 13 races will make the difference"

Extract: "The stakes are high in the 2018 midterm elections: control of the U.S. House. For Democrats to reclaim power, they must forge a path through California. The party considers nine districts here to be battlegrounds and can't win the House without winning at least a few of them."

Irma Won’t “Wake Up” Climate Change-Denying Republicans. Their Whole Ideology Is on the Line.
By Naomi Klein
Quote
AS ONE OF the most powerful storms ever recorded bore down on the continental United States, with much of Florida under evacuation order, President Donald Trump was focused on a matter of grave urgency.

He gathered his cabinet at Camp David and said there was no time to waste. With Hurricane Irma set to potentially devastate huge swaths of Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina, now was the time, he said, to rush through massive … tax cuts.

Yes, that’s right. He wasn’t focused on getting massive aid to those most affected. He wasn’t focused on massive change to our energy and transit systems to lower greenhouse gas emissions so that Irma-like storms do not become a thrice-annual occurrence. His mind was on massive changes to the tax code — which, despite Trump’s claims that he is driven by a desire to give the middle class relief, would in fact hand corporations the biggest tax cut in decades and the very wealthy a sizable break as well.
...
Here is what we need to understand in a hurry: Climate change, especially at this late date, can only be dealt with through collective action that sharply curtails the behavior of corporations, such as Exxon Mobil and Goldman Sachs (both so lavishly represented at Trump’s cabinet meeting). Climate action demands investments in the public sphere — in new energy grids, public transit and light rail, and energy efficiency — on a scale not seen since World War II. And that can only happen by raising taxes on the wealthy and on corporations, the very people Trump is determined to shower with the most generous tax cuts, loopholes, and regulatory breaks.

In short, climate change detonates the ideological scaffolding on which contemporary conservatism rests. ...

Trump administration working toward renewed drilling in Arctic National Wildlife Refuge

Congress has the sole authority to determine whether oil and gas drilling can take place within’s the iconic refuge’s 19.6 million acres. But seismic studies represent a necessary first step, and Interior Department officials are modifying a 1980s regulation to permit this initial activity.

Which is the best answer to Sep-2012 ASI lost (compared to 1979-2000)?
50% [NSIDC Extent] or
73% [PIOMAS Volume]

Volume is harder to measure than extent, but 3-dimensional space is real, 2D's hide ~50% thickness gone.
-> IPCC/NSIDC trends [based on extent] underestimate the real speed of ASI lost.

Uncle Mikey Pence (we're close😉) looks to be in serious trouble.  Everyone knows that he has been lying from day one.  All those acting classes where he worked so hard on giving a serious look when he lied have all been for naught.

And now all the folks in his staff know that his goose is cooked.

As I noted many months ago....both Donnie and Mikey are toast .  A LOT of answers are still unknown.  Who's going to be fried first?  Are they going to be fried together?  What is going to happen to Paul Ryan?  Is shit going to hit the fan before January of 2018 when the Republicans are still in charge....OR...will they be ousted AFTER the next Congress is seated....and if that next House of Reps has the Democrats in charge.....that means we could have President Nancy.

Crazy times ahead.  If I were you Donnie.....I would get in all the golf you can over the next year.  It will likely be the last golf you play for a while.

Saw a clip of General Kelly listening to Donnie speak at the UN today.  Kelly looks like a man who knows what he has to do...(quit)...but isn't too thrilled about it.  And if you take that one step further....Kelly may know that he not only has to quit....he has to warn people that Donnie is not fit to be in the Oval Office.  It is Kelly's DUTY to do that....but he doesn't like it.

Donnie Small Hands continues to cut links to scientific data at various scientific sites throughout the US.

So.....eight months in and this is what Donnie Small Hands has achieved:

1). Put us closer to nuclear war than we have been since the 1960's
2). Continue to antagonize Iran
3). Has scrapped a great deal of scientific data that is now not accessible
4). Continued to attempt to kick millions of US citizens off of healthcare
5). Used campaign funds to pay for his and his sons legal fees related to RussiaGate
6). Continue to oversee a US dollar that continues to drop as other countries continue to price some commodities in the Chinese Yuan.

We are drawing closer to the point where we will soon see a couple of high level resignations in Donnie's administration.

The US has a sociopath at the helm..  and his hands are off the wheel.  Things will get much more serious before we see any improvement....and any improvement will only come AFTER Donnie and Mikey are removed from office....and that may be a year or more from now.

Tom Price....one of Donnie's  CROOKS in his administration.....has racked up more than $300,000 in costs for using private jets.  Just last week...he spent $25,000 for a trip from Washington DC to Philadelphia that should have cost him less than $700 for commercial jet or $500 for train.

Tom is a crook from Georgia...my current domicile.  He is pathetic...and crooked.  He never would have been given a second look in any other administration.  But in Donnie's filthy swamp...he fits in perfectly.

I'm so shocked 😳 that my pals at FOX News haven't been all over this.  Obama using Dijon mustard on his hamburger was a national offense.  But Tom Price wasting more than $250,000 is ok by FOX.

I guess FOX is still too busy lying 🤥

I see that Donnie is busy tonight hurtling the US into a possible nuclear war with North Korea.  Kim is the worst leader in the world.  Having the second worst leader in the world in Donnie is very little consolation.

The folks around Donnie in his administration better get their shit together SOON.  General Kelly and Nikki Haley I am talking ABOUT YOU.  Staying in office is NOT a service to our country.  It is a DISSERVICE to our country.

What WOULD BE a service to our country....is stepping down from your position in the administration, and telling the US PEOPLE that we elected someone TOTALLY UNFIT for the office....and he needs to be REMOVED ASAP before he destroys the country.

THAT would be a great service to the country.

China is at least taking some action against their trading partner, North Korea:

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-41370722

Seeing as how Kim is the only overweight North Korean, the "Dotard in chief", Donald Trump could return the insult by calling Kim "Mr. Chubby Cheeks!"

Regarding this latest attempt to repeal the Affordable Care Act ("Obamacare") -- why Congressional Republicans will vote for a bill that would clearly harm their own constituents:

Joy Reid, on The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell:

I texted Republicans and asked, “Why are they doing this?”  The answers I’m getting back are chilling....  Donors to these Republicans are saying, “Do it now.  I want my tax cut, we gave you money to give us tax cuts.”  Repealing Obamacare gives these very rich donors a tax cut, and they are demanding it.  They don’t care what happens to the 30 million people.  They are telling these Republicans, “Do not be concerned with what happens to your own constituents.  Give me my money, or I won’t give YOU any money.”

1). Still waiting for Washington press corps to "up their game" and pressure lying Sarah Huckabee on her lies and Donnie's lies.  It WILL happen....but we're certainly not there yet.

2). You should expect more and more attacks on first amendment rights by Donnie and company.  Also expect even LESS access to questioning of Donnie, his administration, and his communications department led by woefully unqualified Fake Christian Sarah Huckabee.

Lies like the dark corners of quiet.....and the rambunctious fray of unreasoned confusion.  Expect Donnie, Sarah and company to follow that strategy closely over the coming months.

A brilliant homage to Hunter S. Thompson, Joe Bageant and gonzo journalism by Matt Taibbi. Some of this could have come straight outta "Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail."

"Watching Trump lean over a podium on the road to the presidency was like watching a stud boar hump a hole in the wall."

" ... win or lose, the run was pure glory for him, a Sherman's March of taboo politics and testosterone fury that would leave a mark on America forever. "

"The president of the United States is seeing things. He might as well be shooing imaginary ants off his suit."

"We deserve Trump, though. God, do we deserve him."

"This is who we've always been, a nation of madmen and sociopaths, for whom murder is a line item, kept hidden via a long list of semantic self-deceptions ... "

"Trump is no malfunction. He's a perfect representation of who, as a country, we are and always have been: an insane monster. "

"Our desperation as a nation to get back to "normal" – that is to say, back to being able to pretend we're a civilized people with justified hegemonic authority ... "

" ... Tennessee's glad-handing, six-faced, wanna-be Napoleon, wheelerdealer Republican Bob Corker ..."

"Trump has been mad as a sack of bees since he launched his campaign."

" ... Trump by his own description is not a splenetic rightwing basket case at all, but just a cleverly disguised cross of God, Norman Schwarzkopf, Coretta Scott King, Gloria Steinem, Pope Francis and, apparently, Cory Booker's mother, Carolyn. "

"Every Trump event is must-see TV now, because no one ever knows when he's going to go on one of his unscripted ape-rants."

Taibbi ends with:

"Until then, he's just the president we deserve, dragging our name down where it belongs. He is miserable, so are we, and we're stuck with each other. Karma really is a bitch. "

It's a long article. Read the whole thing.

Both crazy loudmouths are really going at.  No...I'm not talking about Sean Hannity and Sara Palin:  I'm talking about Dotard Donnie and North Korea's Kim.

China has "said" it would not interfere in a war IF North Korea started it.  BUT said it would come to North Korea defense IF the US started it.

Donnie is not the sharpest pumpkin 🎃 that fell off the truck...BUT... even he could figure out that if he is able to antagonize Kim into starting the war....then Donnie can "feel" like he was just defending the "western interests."

Of course that won't be a big help to hundreds of thousands of dead South Koreans/Japanese/Americans.  But at least Donnie will have created havoc and get people to ignore RussiaGate.

Donnie likely thinks his way out of this is to go to war with SOMEBODY.  He would most likely prefer Iran......but if he can't "sell that"..... acting in "self defense" against North Korea would likely be his second choice.

Look for Donnie to continue to provoke Iran and North Korea.

Re: Trump removal

In that Taibbi article, DiFi states that it is likely he will serve out his first term. DiFi has grown old and wise in evil and is well connected with the plutocrats who own the country, the torturers of the intelligence community and the craven politicians who do their bidding.

Of course, she might be wrong or lying. Won't be the first time.
