Yes, Antarctic Sea Ice is increasing  - a bit below average. But with on average 15.8 million km2 (99.4%)of extent gain to go....

JAXA ANTARCTIC SEA ICE EXTENT AT 28TH FEB 2,407,226 Km2, up 53k on the day, and 260k greater than the 2017 minimum that happened on March 1st 2017. (This was the latest date of minimum certainly since 2003).

The graph shows how in 2017 extent gains from now were generally well below the average.
The table is just a look at possibilities in 2018.

JAXA ANTARCTIC SEA ICE EXTENT AT 2nd March 2,457,657 Km2, up a mere 5k on the day, and 310k greater than the 2017 minimum that happened on March 1st 2017. (This was the latest date of minimum certainly since 2003).

The table is just a look at possibilities in 2018, showing how extent gain over the last 10 years would produce an extent maximum ranging from 16.55 to 18.77 million km2.

JAXA ANTARCTIC SEA ICE EXTENT AT 7th March  2,748,504  Km2, 500k greater than 2017 on that date. Nevertheless, extent gain to date is just below average, and average extent gain to maximum would result in a very low maximum.

But with 99%, 15.28 million km2 of average extent gain to go, pure speculation.

JAXA DATA AS AT 11th March Extent 3,119,415 km2, a jump of 236k in just two days.

Extent is now 640 k greater than 2017 on that date ( 640K - the RAM in my first twin-floppy IBM PC).

So much for my speculations about a sea change to Antarctic sea ice extent.

JAXA DATA as at 4 April

Something odd has happened in the Antarctic since my last posting on the 25th March. Extent gain has slowed dramatically. Extent is now 0.97 million km2 greater than 2017 compared with 1.3 million about one week ago.

Antarctica 'gives ground to the ocean'
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-43627673

Re grounding line retreat

Quote
The new data-set confirms other observations that show the mighty Pine Island Glacier, one of the biggest and fast-flowing glaciers on Earth, and whose grounding line had been in major retreat since the 1940s, appears now to have stabilised somewhat.

The line is currently going backwards by only 40m/yr compared with the roughly 1,000m/yr seen in previous studies. This could suggest that ocean melting at the PIG's base is pausing.

Its next-door neighbour, Thwaites Glacier, on the other hand, is seeing an acceleration in the reversal of its grounding line - from 340m/yr to 420m/yr.

oops probably wrong thread, it isn't sea ice.

JAXA ANTARCTIC EXTENT AS AT 10 APRIL 5,595,075 km2

Since 4 April, Antarctic sea ice extent gain has gone up to about normal again. However, the difference between 2108 and 2017 has reduced to + 0.84 million from + 0.97 million on 4 April.

On average, 22.5% of extent gain is done already (cf. with Arctic where just 6 percent of extent loss is done by this date)_.

A new minimum maximum remains a possibility.

ps: The post by Crandles above (oops, wrong thread) is nevertheless a timely reminder that the sea ice is essentially a side-show - it is what lies beneath that is really, really, scary.

JAXA DATA - EXTENT 6,006,463 km2 April 16, 2018

Extent crossed the 6 million km2 mark 5 days before 2017. However, 2018 extent is just 0.57 million km2 > 2017 cf 1.3 million km2 on March 28.

Extent gain is, on average (last 10 years) 27% done. A record low maximum of well below 18 million km2 remains a real possibility.

JAXA EXTENT DATA -  6,199,027 km2(April 19, 2018)

On average, extent gain is 29% done, and is 630,000 km2 less than average to date.
2018 is now 477,000 km2 obove 2017 compared with 1,300,000 in late March.

If history is a guide, 2018 is heading for a record low maximum of around 17.5 million km2. 8 out of 10 of the last 10 years say definitely a record low maximum. I am surprised.

JAXA EXTENT DATA -  6,249,724 km2(April 20, 2018)

I am surprised again by the continued slow increase in extent..

On average, extent gain is 30% done, and is 700,000 km2 (15%) less than the average to date.
2018 is now 377,000 km2 above 2017 compared with 477,000 the day before and 1,300,000 in late March.

If history is a guide, 2018 is heading for a record low maximum of around 17.4 million km2. 8 out of 10 of the last 10 years agree.

JAXA EXTENT DATA -  6,417,382 km2(April 22, 2018

In the last two days extent gain has returned to average, but well below that of 2017. As a result, 2018 is now just 241,000 km2 above 2017 compared with 377,000 km2 on the 20 April and 1,300,000 in late March.

On average, extent gain is 31% done, and is 710,000 km2 (15%) less than the average to date. If history is a guide, 2018 is heading for a record low maximum of around 17.4 million km2. 8 out of 10 of the last 10 years agree.

JAXA EXTENT DATA -  6,598,767 km2(April 24, 2018)

Extent gain has returned to below average, and well below that of 2017. As a result, 2018 is now just 185,000 km2 above 2017 compared with 1,300,000 in late March.

On average, extent gain is 32% done, and is an impressive 760,000 km2 (15%) less than the average to date. If history is a guide, 2018 is heading for a record low maximum of around 17.4 million km2. 8 out of 10 of the last 10 years agree. Even if remaining extent gain turns out  at the maximum of the last 10 years, the 2018 maximum would be 18.4 million km2, the third lowest in the satellite record.

Extent gain has remains well below average, and well below that of 2017. As a result, 2018 is now just 94k km2 above 2017 compared with 1.3 million km2 in late March.

On average, extent gain is 34% done, and is an even more impressive 880,000 km2 (16%) less than the average to date. If history is a guide, 2018 is heading for an even lower record low maximum of  about 17.2 to 17.3 million km2. JAXA EXTENT -  6,709,490 km2(April 26, 2018)

Extent gain has remained well below average, and well below that of 2017, except for 28 April - up by 122k. Nevertheless, 2018 is now just 62k km2 above 2017 compared with 1.3 million km2 in late March.

On average, extent gain is 35% done, and is 870,000 km2 (16%) less than the average to date. If history is a guide, 2018 is heading for an even lower record low maximum of  about 17.2 to 17.3 million km2. Even if remaining extent gain turns out to be at the maximum of the last 10 years, the 2018 maximum would be between 18.2 and 18.3 million km2, about 0.2 million km2 above 2017, the lowest in the satellite record.

Will 2018 be at the lowest extent in the satellite record by May 1st - 50/50?

JAXA EXTENT -  7,403,283 km2(May 2, 2018)

From 28 April extent gain has been at 100k or +100k. As a result, extent is 169k above 2017 though still lowest (since 2000 at any rate.

On average, extent gain is 35% done, and is 550,000 km2 (13%) less than the average to date. Despite the recent large extent gains, if history is a guide, 2018 is still  heading for a record low maximum of  about 17.2 to 17.3 million km2. Even if remaining extent gain turns out to be at the maximum of the last 10 years, the 2018 maximum would be between 18.2 and 18.3 million km2, about 0.2 million km2 above 2017, the lowest in the satellite record.

Was 2018 be at the lowest extent in the satellite record by May 1st - NO?

Antarctic Extent on May 3rd,  is back to just 74K km^2 above 2017 and global extent is lowest by about 110K.

Interesting to see that according to NOAA-ESRL figures, April was the hottest on record for the Antarctic by more than 1 degree for both  SST  and AirTemperaatutes. This is bigger than the gap between the second placed year and the eleventh placed year. This suggests that the southern ocean is a whole lot warmer than usual and continued low increases in extent are likely.  Checking the figures the oceans between 45S and 67S were hottest on record for April and 4/10ths hotter than 2017. So there is a lot of warmish water out there ready to slow down the extent increase,

JAXA EXTENT 8,268,275 km2(May 8, 2018)

Two double century extent increases (May 5 and 6) changed things somewhat. Extent is now 319k km2 above 2017.  Despite this a record low maximum of 17.5 million km2 is still the average forecast.

BUT (there is always a but) just 42% of extent gain done on average and the Antarctic is somewhat unpredictable.

JAXA EXTENT 9,524,493 km2(May 18, 2018)

Extent gains switched to well above average over the previous six days, averaging 150k per day, but on 18th May moderated to 86k. Extent is now 239k km2 above 2017.  A record low maximum of 17.68 million km2 is still the average forecast.

BUT (there is always a but) just 49% of extent gain done on average and the Antarctic is somewhat unpredictable.

In the latest from Nature , Massom et al. have a paper that details the protective effect of sea ice on ice shelves which may be of some interest here. I describe it here:

Antarctic Sea Ice is often dismissed of little importance in the grand scheme of things. The following is a quote from the June 2018 sea ice analysis from NSIDC.

Quote
Antarctica’s sea ice and ice shelf disintegration
A new study in the Journal Nature found that reduced sea ice in the northwestern Weddell Sea and southern Bellingshausen Sea likely contributed to the weakening of major ice shelves prior to their disintegration in the 1990s and early 2000s. Loss of the sea ice buffer near Antarctica’s coast allows long-period ocean swell to flex ice shelves. Under ordinary conditions, this flexing has little effect. However, if the ice shelves have been pre-conditioned by seasonal melt-water flooding, the flexing by wave action in late summer can have a devastating effect. Minor flexure of the ice shelf plate allows water to infiltrate existing cracks and initiate fracturing of the ice.

Four major ice shelf break-up events in 1995 (Larsen A), 2002 (Larsen B), and 2008 and 2009 (Wilkins) all occurred after multiple weeks where no sea ice was present near the ice shelf fronts to dampen ocean swell. In the case of the Larsen A and B events, the loss of the ice shelves initiated a significant acceleration of the tributary glaciers. The study demonstrates that sea ice—a component of the cryosphere that is very sensitive to changing climate and ocean—has an important protective effect on the Antarctic ice sheet.

JAXA EXTENT 17,691,015 km2(August 29, 2018)

You will see from the first table attached that on this date was the maximum extent for 2016. It was from then that sea ice extent in Antarctica essentially flipped from a gradual increase year by year towards record lows from then on. This is the third year of that downward trend.

The Antarctic continues to demonstrate its unpredictability. High extent gains followed by extent losses. Extent is 183 k (1.0%) above 2017 and 758k (4.3%) below the 2010's average.

A maximum of 18.24 million km2 - 180k above a record low, -is the average forecast result with 96.6 % of the season's average extent gain done, i.e. a second year of very low Antarctic Sea Ice Extent is very likely. Range of outcomes over the last 10 years using remaining melt is in the range of 17.69 to 18.72 million km2. On 26 August ice extent was 17.78 million, and has not risen above that in the 9 days following. It is possible that a new record low maximum at a new record early data has happened.

Antarctic Sea Ice is often dismissed of little importance in the grand scheme of things. The following is a quote from the June 2018 sea ice analysis from NSIDC.

Per NSIDC:-

Antarctica’s sea ice and ice shelf disintegration[/b]
.... sea ice—a component of the cryosphere that is very sensitive to changing climate and ocean—has an important protective effect on the Antarctic ice sheet.

Another drop tomorrow of ~0 to -25k km^2 will result in 2018 being lowest on record for the day. Thanks in part of course to the whopper of a day 2017 had with a gain of ~190k. (eyeball estimated figures)
