Bioinformatics made a warp recently, is quantum metrology next ?

Arxiv article "Quantum Optical Metrology -- The Lowdown on High-N00N States" submitted in 2009 is a review of some recent theoretical and experimental advances in field of quantum optical metrology.
The last sentence: "Boy, has the fun just begun, or what!?"

Using squeezed light to hunt for predicted 'squeezed' space effects, nice!
How close they can approach Heisenberg limit (10-30 m) ?  8)

Hello Ivica,

Today I read the newspaper saying a vietnamese family found in the jungle living alone for 40 years, they do speak also as an example of the lykov family in Russia :

http://www.vice.com/en_uk/read/meet-the-last-lykov-000001-v20n4?Contentpage=1

They speak about Agafia wich you wrote about some time ago ! She looks like her !

http://english.sina.com/world/p/2013/0204/558005.html
(May be I missed something if you were talking of that later on...sorry then)

Laurent thanks, that reminds me to update Siberia thread.

Ivica, great finding, perhaps we need a image thread documenting how people silently adapt or get effected by climate change. Do you remember the closed gas stations after Sandy?

Arcticio, yes, such image thread would be good to have.

Phenomenom showed above is the result of a forecast of extreme weather event (i.e. something potentionaly/possibly dangerous).
People didn't ask for published and peer reviewed material first, they acted.
Acted because of their feeling of 'connection' (ownership-money, usability, pet, fetish...) with car and knowing that car can not protect itself.
In a short, they felt that was their problem which needs their action.

Discussion about reason(s) for lack of feeling of conectedness, belonginess, togetherness, societal and overall one, belongs to a heart of human problem and deserves own topic under Rest (my opinion).

"AGU’s New Climate Change Statement Emphasizes Human Role" by Bud Ward  —  August 20, 2013, the Yale Climate Media Forum.
"Thirteen approve, with one official and very vocal dissenter...", I enjoyed reading it. ;D

AGU revised climate change statement starts:
Quote
Human-induced climate change requires urgent action.
Humanity is the major influence on the global climate change observed over the past 50 years.
Rapid societal responses can significantly lessen negative outcomes.

“Human activities are changing Earth’s climate. ..."

Adopted by the American Geophysical Union December 2003; Revised and Reaffirmed December 2007, February 2012, August 2013

Very interesting !
Seperating commercial banks and investment banks is absolutely needed !!!
Banks should not be private but a kind of public, mean like an association we should be able to control what percentage is needed for running the banks and no more ! (7% of the global benefits ? less ? more ?)

Just to make sure that I don't think any meaningful message is sinking into the  consumerat I just hear on the news that the size of the average new house being built in the US has hit a record high.  Over 2700 sq ft.  This is bigger than the previous record set just before the big housing/financial crash.  Sigh.

Wow, we're building a 1600 square feet house here in Austria, and think that's huuuge. But it's also with the idea that another couple with kids might join us.

We met an American family that have a 4000 square foot house, that's not counting the 1000 square foot play room for the kids over the garage. That garage and play room is bigger than what we're building.

That wouldn't be so bad...

... if the houses were being built to near zero energy standards for heating/cooling, and were built to last centuries without needing to be replaced...

... and there was suitable infrastructural support to connect everything together without predicating mass transit upon fossil fuels.

I'm guessing they're none of the above though.

The relationship between words and their meaning is a fascinating one, and linguists have spent countless years deconstructing it, taking it apart letter by letter, and trying to figure out why there are so many feelings and ideas that we cannot even put words to, and that our languages cannot identify.

LOL you make me feel guilty!  I was proud of our downsizing moving from the farm with the 3500 sq ft house, 30 by 30 ft shop, 2 car garage, and 4 other farm buildings to our little house in AZ.  We now have 2200 sq ft, a 25 by 25 ft 2 car garage, another 1 car garage that we converted into my wife's weaving studio (this makes some money) and my new little shop of 25 by 10 ft (this makes some money too).

Don't feel guilty. That's just the difference between Europe and the US, and you have to make do with the culture that's there. It's all relative.

But the US is a bit of an insane country, of course.  ;D  ;)

Good grief. That is 46 minutes of my life I won't get back. Let me get this right: they are saying that when we run out of oil we can use biofuels, because that's totes non-Saudi Arabian.  There'll be a nasty patch when there's not enough food to go around and we'll suffer cuts to electricity and GPS, but then everyone can start raising hens and growing veg on empty city centre lots, and they'll grow fuel from algae and planes and cars can start again (for rich people). It is as innumerate as it is alarmist. I didn't hear the word "carbon" once.

Anne,  :) oh yes, that documentary - from 2010. I think - offers very 'optimistic' view but even that seems to be too much to grasp for society.

You're right. Its consoling note was very jarring as it seemed to be suggesting: OK, oil's gone, so let's look at alternatives to oil so we can carry on the same way as before. There was nothing about ways people could cut consumption. Nothing that recognised - seriously - the real scale of our interconnectedness. It implied things could get up and running again after a few hiccups, although "societies will be fractured". Actually, if societies were fractured they wouldn't get up and running very quickly, but any society that manages to survive this sort of horror (and obvs it won't happen overnight like in this silly documentary) will have learned to co-operate and survive a whole lot of hardship. The focus on biofuels was creepy. I suppose this sort of disaster-porn documentary has a value in making people think imaginatively. I just don't think it makes people think imaginatively enough. And I'm an idiot, because I didn't notice the date. :)

Why anyone can not be a pilot? Silly question, life of passengers depends on that.
Why anyone can be a policy maker?
