How the Arctic Ocean became saline

Researchers model climate changes caused by the submersion of the Greenland-Scotland Ridge

Date:June 6, 2017
Source:Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research
Summary:The Arctic Ocean was once a gigantic freshwater lake. Only after the land bridge between Greenland and Scotland had submerged far enough did vast quantities of salt water pour in from the Atlantic.

Quote
The Arctic Ocean was once a gigantic freshwater lake. Only after the land bridge between Greenland and Scotland had submerged far enough did vast quantities of salt water pour in from the Atlantic. With the help of a climate model, researchers from the Alfred Wegener Institute have demonstrated how this process took place, allowing us for the first time to understand more accurately how Atlantic circulation, as we know it today came about. The results of the study have now been published in the journal Nature Communications.

Every year, ca. 3,300 cubic kilometres of fresh water flows into the Arctic Ocean. This is equivalent to ten percent of the total volume of water that all the world's rivers transport to the oceans per year. In the warm and humid climate of the Eocene (ca. 56 to 34 million years ago), the inflow of freshwater was probably even greater. However, in contrast to today, during that geological period there was no exchange of water with other oceans. The influx of saline Atlantic and Pacific water, which today finds its way into the Arctic Ocean from the Pacific via the Bering Strait and from the North Atlantic via the Greenland-Scotland Ridge, wasn't possible -- the region that is today completely submerged was above the sea at that time.
...
But did the "Arctic Really Great Lake" ever freeze? (from Wikipedia):
Quote
Climate
The Eocene Epoch contained a wide variety of different climate conditions that includes the warmest climate in the Cenozoic Era and ends in an icehouse climate. The evolution of the Eocene climate began with warming after the end of the Palaeocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM) at 56 million years ago to a maximum during the Eocene Optimum at around 49 million years ago. During this period of time, little to no ice was present on Earth with a smaller difference in temperature from the equator to the poles. Following the maximum was a descent into an icehouse climate from the Eocene Optimum to the Eocene-Oligocene transition at 34 million years ago. During this decrease ice began to reappear at the poles, and the Eocene-Oligocene transition is the period of time where the Antarctic ice sheet began to rapidly expand.

But when did it go from freshwater "Lake" to salty "Ocean"?   The Middle Eocene Arctic was dominated by freshwater (from Early to middle Eocene history of the Arctic Ocean from Nd-Sr isotopes in fossil fish debris, Lomonosov Ridge, 2009), although
Quote
Evidence of intermittent exchange between the Arctic and adjacent oceans is also preserved in the deeper water (Nd) isotope signature of the fish debris, although limited connections during the Eocene probably restricted this exchange. We conclude that an active year-round Arctic hydrologic cycle, along with eustatic and tectonic controls on oceanic exchange, must have exerted significant control on the evolution of Eocene Arctic Ocean water column structure and the isotopic composition of early and middle Eocene fish debris reported on here.

Possible shallow marine connections existed between the Arctic and Tethys (via western Siberian Seaway/Turgay Strait), North Atlantic (via the Norwegian-Greenland Sea and the Labrador Sea), and the Pacific Ocean (via proto-Bering Strait). NA, North America; A, Asia/Siberia; Gr, Greenland; E, Europe. Middle Eocene connections are uncertain, and exchange with Tethys may have ceased by early middle Eocene time

Re IJIS thread - why is polluted with non IJIS related speculation?

Re contrarian betting :
Big boys make seriously big money betting contrarianingly. They only bet contrarianingly when they have insider info or they themselves helped manufacture the wild swing to one side of true value. They never bet unknowingly.
Small boys who bet contrarianingly on the wild hope of getting rich loose their shirt long before they wipe their arses with 100$ bills.
If most of the mpst knowledgeable people on this forum are very fearful for the state of the ice in September, better not to risk betting that we'll be running adventure marathons to the pole...

Climate scientists seeking opinion of stupid idiot to complete study

OTTAWA – Scientists are nearing completion on another planet-wide study on climate change, but say they require the opinion of a “real stupid idiot” in order to complete their work.

“We’ve spent months conducting research and analyzing the data,” explained Dr. Naomi Prashad. “So we’re nearly there. We just need the assistance of a total brow-furrowing goddamn dolt to point out any shortcomings in our work.”
I recently joined the twitter thing, where I post more analysis, pics and animations: @Icy_Samuel

The Jimmy Dore Show was in a bit of a slump recently, with Dore incessantly ranting about the same things (and cursing even more than usual). His ego played up a little as well. And it was less funny. It has to be funny, that's crucial. Not just for the viewers, but also for Dore's team, because it's really difficult to do things if you don't get some fun or satisfaction out of it.

I've been watching some videos from the past days, and it's really good stuff again.

Coming today:

Presentation of the Dialogue:
http://press.vatican.va/content/salastampa/en/bollettino/pubblico/2017/10/27/171027a.html
Quote
Representatives of the Church and high level European political leaders will participate in the Dialogue, to contribute to a constructive reflection on the fundamental challenges for the European project.
...
• Climate change and the resulting need to change our non-sustainable lifestyle in the medium term. Connected to this is also the problem of the costs of ecological change and their distribution.
...
this event is not a “classic congress”, but rather a dialogue; following an introductory discussion on the topics listed by Pope Francis in his speech at the award of the Charlemagne Prize:
• “Integration” (with fractures and lacerations both within and between EU Member States);
• “Dialogue” has been typical of our western democracies;
• “Capacity to generate” (what form of economic model we will need in the future).

** i forgot this (my bolds):

" But we believe that EU citizens, with their different experiences, their different expectations and with their rich and diverse capacities, should be brought back to the centre of “Project Europe” and be able to be its agents."

Quote
Pope Francis was presented with the keys to a brand-new Lamborghini Huracan on Wednesday by officials from the luxury car maker.

The special edition car, however, will be auctioned off by Sotheby's in London and the proceeds given to four charities in Pope Francis' name.

Pope Francis blessed the car and signed the hood after receiving it in front of his Casa Santa Marta residence.

Sporting the papal colors - white with yellow-gold detailing - the Lamborghini Huracan's base price usually start at 183,000 euros but the specially-made papal car should bring far more at auction.

Good stuff ivica!

Beginning at ~27 minutes in he explaines to Americans how Europeans, and in fact most of the world, are treated by employers thanks to governmental regulations. Almost as an aside he speaks of his experience with French healthcare professionals. It was almost an aside, or charts pointing to increased longevity, live birth statistics, or other successes would have been included in the medical segment.

My parents sold their Canadian enterprises to their employees back in the early 60's. Only one proved viable over the years, but it's still providing a livelihood to some families in Ontario more than half a century later.

I've been following the discussions here for some years now, but this is my first post.

The 3rd way, excellent! That could solve many of our problems.
I just wish there was a list somewere of all the worker coops in the world so that I could choose to buy their products and services. That seem like a rather simple way to support such entrepises.

If you've been following for that time you'll know that we're generally quite a collegial bunch.

Although co-ops were springing up everywhere in California during the Vietnam War protesting era, the only place I've seen much of them since then has been in some of the more isolated regions in Canada.

Good luck with your hunt, and let us know if you have any luck finding, or starting? a list.

:o rembering the swamp bodies in northern Europe, in 5000 years some future archologist could be digging those out nd claiming these people were ritually murdered and cast in swamp. Or else, they were local chieftains who were honored by mummification.

Finally! Now that we're gardening more and more, and also do building outside (having to stop early, because the sun is already down), we've become more aware of this natural cycle of shortening days. I really feel like celebrating that tomorrow is the shortest day!

I dont always reply to your posts, but I do read them voraciously. Your interactions with animals, friends/customers, and itinerant Mexicans borders on the inspirational. I spent the evening exchanging gifts and dinner with a small, but eclectic group.
A Serbian lass mourning the destruction of her culture. A Tasmanian student intent on becoming a Canadian citizen, or at least joining Canadian Mensa. A Polish lady who still hates Germany for what it did to her country, but who writes an entertainment column in a german language newspaper. Her daughter and son in law who make mainstream movies, but despair of the covert political messages they contain. An octogenarian, now reduced to catching and releasing female octogenarians when in season in Las Vegas, and of course my wonderful wife of 29 years.

The banter touched on the difference between Truth and Fact, and why Trump should be exalted or exiled. We explored the We vs Them concept and reached a rare consensus, that the problem predated our sapien ancestors and couldn't be solved, but that it could be sapiently modified and sanely mollified if sensibly approached.
We vilified America, Canada, Britain, and most of the Western World. I wasn't alone in praising Putin, an oddity in these times, but was backed to the wall in my defense of the FSM. Our lone Baptist faced similar obstacles against a plethora of atheists.

For hour after hour the BS, food, drink and gifts were examined, consumed, and shared. Everyone had moments when they shined, and everyone enjoyed the resultant glow that lit up our evening.

I'm beyond the passions that drove my youth. As striving for success, to succeed, even for secure subsistence, fade in the rear view mirror something new waits take their place.
To be entertaining, even as I'm entertained, isn't a lofty goal. But it's where I am. I've evolved into a bit of a raconteur, and it's enough. The days of Fighting the Man and Rallying the Troops is past.

A pleasant dinner surrounded by friends, an occasional appreciative glance or comment. These now are my raison d'etre, it's sufficient.

Have a better year than 2017 and 2016, folks. Proper winter is becoming non-existent here but a year with no snow has not yet happened. Wishing good year for sensible people and utter destruction of republicans in every election and their personal lives with a picture of a snow covered elm.

Physicists Aim to Classify All Possible Phases of Matter is nice Quanta magazine article for those who like to think about phases of matter. i like topological & combinatorial feeling & chalenges of it (with entanglement nonsense mod-ed out ;D ). :)
it is also nice brain relaxation item to counteract msm distractions.

The sound of a penguin falling, its sympathetic crew responding, and its gruff dismissal of pity is so far the audio hit of the year.

As light relief many will be able to see the blood moon resulting from the lunar eclipse on 31 January. In the UK we will see absolutely - NADA.
(if you go to Patagonia or the Antarctic you can also see a partial eclipse of the sun on the 15 Feb)
