[Solved] How to post an image?
« on: February 20, 2013, 09:39:25 PM »
I used the "Insert Image" icon (directly below 'B') and copied the link in between the "img] [/img".

That didn't work.  What to do?

Hi Bob,

I already modified your comment with the following text:

Quote
Edit N: Bob, I modified your post so the image shows. You used the image button from the WYSIWYG editor correctly (lower left), but the HTML links screwed it up. If you just highlight the URL of your image and then press the image button things should work. Hover over the buttons to see what they do.

Test...

I pasted the link into the message box.  Selected/highlighted it by using the left mouse/trackball button.  Then clicked on the Insert Image icon.

Let's see what happens....

I think Photobucket may be your problem.

They seem to have "updated" their site recently, and made it less useful.

searching there for your file: USHeatingOilConsmp_zps987710f9.jpg gets a "file not found" response.

Bob, only put the .jpg URL thingy (in this case: http://i619.photobucket.com/albums/tt275/Bob_Wall/USHeatingOilConsmp_zps987710f9.jpg ) between the IMG bracket thingy, and remove the rest. With the HTML tags in it, it won't be recognized as a URL.

Should look like this:
"img]http://i619.photobucket.com/albums/tt275/Bob_Wall/USHeatingOilConsmp_zps987710f9.jpg[/img" (with " replacing the opening and closing tag thingies).

OK, got it.

Here's the PhotoBucket way.  (Not to be confused with the cowboy way....)

If you've got the image showing on the page then look to the right where it says "Image Links".

Click on Update Link Options.

New page.  Check "IMG code".  Save.

Return to image.

Now on the right you'll see "IMG Code" in the "Image Links" box.

Click on the box that starts with "IMG...".  It auto-copies the link.

Paste into the forum message window.  The copy brings the [im stuff with it.  No need to click on the icon.

Oh, and thanks....

Let's make a test:

and the result is great!
Which is the best answer to Sep-2012 ASI lost (compared to 1979-2000)?
50% [NSIDC Extent] or
73% [PIOMAS Volume]

Volume is harder to measure than extent, but 3-dimensional space is real, 2D's hide ~50% thickness gone.
-> IPCC/NSIDC trends [based on extent] underestimate the real speed of ASI lost.

Hi Fred,

Recently (last 2 or 3 days?) I have been unable to attach .PNG graphics to my comments.

I get a consistent time-out error msg (i'll try to attach a screen-grab to this comment in .GIF format)

Please let me know what you think.

HTH, and thanks in advance!  :-*

EDIT:

Yes indeed, this error message occurs when I try to upload an attachment as a binary-encoded .PNG but it works fine when the same image is saved as a .GIF

Note: I see that .PNG files were allowed as attachments, at least when posted in February as above.

Well, logs say "your attachment couldn't be saved. This might happen because it took too long to upload or the file is bigger than the server will allow".

I've not changed anything on the server, so it might be a time-out (did you get the error immediately? did you retry with same file at another time?), a huge file (but I guess not) - or did you change anything on your computer?

Also, can you confirme that you tried 14 times? If not, it might be an indication, too.

Finally you can send me the file for some forensics...

Hi Fred,

It the same content as the .GIF file that I posted here, except for the .PNG format.

Yes, when the error message above asks to 'Try again' I click the button and it fails once more and returns to the error msg in an endless loop.

You should be able to reproduce the problem just by saving any graphic in .GIF and .PNG format and then trying to save them as an attachment to a comment.

Thanks, Fred.
Cheers!

This "now you see it, now you don't" thing has to have something to do with a cookie being sent between computers to communicate in my opinion. I've seen it, but I've never asked why. It recently happened to me with a youtube video I tested with and without tags and seems to happen when you drop your cookies or leave a computer on long enough to fill RAM.

Now that I've checked, I have found the insert image "button", because it wasn't near to my familiar area next to quote and I didn't see it the first time I checked. You should be able to just highlight, copy and paste a proper image address, like a .gif, in the window and have it give the proper img tags.

I discovered long ago on political sites that google images collected images based on user names which were easy to find if someone used a strange name viewed by many hits, but would be buried with common names. Once the internet became filled with misinformation in their search engines, I used to use keywords in google images as a quick surfing way to get to real sites by looking for the source of the image. The junk misinformation sites certainly seem to have expertise to get dominant position on search engines and it can't be because of quality.

Failed attempt resulted with error message, (recalling memory) something like:
"Err No. 21: Connection closed w/o any data being sent."
Perhaps the reason of failure is on the Client side i.e. my Chrome browser ?!

Fred, as you've requested, I will attempt to upload one of the images that previously resulted in the error msg:

"Meier13.Fig1.png"

Nope. I still get the same error msg, as per before. :(

Have you guys noticed anything related to time-of-upload ?

(just my working notes, sorry it might be boring, I'll delete them when I have a solution)

OK, I just ran a Convert with ImageMagick, without changing anything - size just went from 710 to 464 K
----
Isn't it cute ?? Still can't upload it

Lets try if it's related to width or height...
------
Still not, although it's now narrower than Maslanik's graph above.

Let's try a last trick for tonight
---
Ok, with ImageMagick I converted this damn file from png to bmp, then back to png

Still no way !!!

I give up for tonight, BUT a bunch of bytes won't defeat me, stay tuned !
---
I'm baaack - and the damn bug is still here tonight. So it doesn't seem kinda time-related.
----
Ouch, I tried changing some code in a php file (following advice from another guys who had this problem) and immediatly it appeared to be a bad idea - I couldn't browse the forum anymore - nor pload the file of course.

Still searching
----
And what about a small jpeg ?
---
Ok a 100K jpg was fine (removed it)
What about a png now ?

--
GOSH it WORKED out !!!

Let's try with the original buggy file ??

OUCH it worked again...

So, it seems that
- uploading a jpeg file will unlock the uploading feature
- that I can upload a png after a jpg unlocked the damn thing
- and that I can upload other pngs afterward.

Let's Announce This To Our Beloved Users !!!

(of course I don't have the lightest idea about why this worked out..)

Hi Fred,

Now that you have a rough handle on the circumstances surrounding this bug, I wonder if the SMF Forum could be of help tracking down the cause and a fix?

Well I still am unable to reproduce this bug, so it's unfair to report it or say it's the forum's fault: other components, from the server's provider, may be faulty. Of course I've checked on SMF support's website for solutions, and more or less found them.

I'll try to explore those other ways later. The Bug Shall Not Stay Unpunished.
