did NPEO make it up there and put out a buoy farm?

There's no mention of the fact on the NPEO web site, but nonetheless some buoys have been deployed:

Vigilius, Andreas pointed out ITP95 was put out at Barneo this season. If you look at the bottom of the WHOI ITP95 page linked below it says there was also an IMB put out there at the same time.

http://www.whoi.edu/page.do?pid=158516

If Jim knows where to find the IMB deployed at Barneo and might post a link it would be appreciated.

The link is http://imb-crrel-dartmouth.org/imb.crrel/newdata.htm
If I don't have a link I just search for "CRREL IMB" which seems to be specific enough. click active buoys from there

Darwin father-son duo navigate shifting ice, avoid polar bears during North Pole Marathon

"Unlike any other marathon around the world, the North Pole Marathon takes place on drifting ice.

While running the distance, competitors also drift more than one kilometre across the ocean."

So the Polarstern is heading north for an expedition. Didn't want to start a new thread, putting it in Barneo because, well, it's an expedition, and besides I've messed up starting new threads lately. (LOL)

Andreas Macke says "Our hypothesis is that the low-hanging clouds typically found in the Arctic are to a large part responsible for the fact that, over the past few decades, the region has warmed at more than twice the speed of the rest of the planet. This phenomenon is commonly referred to as ‘Arctic amplification’ and hasn’t yet been reflected in global climate models, because we still don’t sufficiently understand the mechanisms involved,”

Another little item about the Polarstern-

http://maritime-executive.com/article/polarstern-sets-sail-for-svalbard

"The icebreaker will go alongside an ice floe, where the atmospheric researchers will spend two weeks continuously measuring how the energy balance on the surface varies with changing cloud cover. By doing so, they hope to address open questions concerning the feedback mechanisms between sea ice, clouds, and particles in the air, which contribute to the warming of the Arctic."

Again, just posting it here on account of I am not sure it's worth a new thread.

Perhaps the name of the thread could be changed from "Barneo 2017" to "Arctic Expeditions". I for one would like a single place for info about the people who are going to the field to get their observations. As an oldie I still think people on the ground have an extra that satellites cannot match.

Awaiting a decision by moderator? I'm posting this link to the Polarstern blog: some entries are only available in german it seems.

worth looking at photos nevertheless

As the thread starter I have the power to change the title. However I for one am not inclined to! We've had a dedicated Barneo thread each year. Why not start a "Polarstern 2017" thread instead?

Or a "Research Vessel and Icebreaker Polarstern" thread (so it doesn't end after 1 year, and visitors who browse know what "Polarstern" means)

Edit:  Andreas created a Research Icebreaker Polarstern thread.
