September is over and I calculated 4.871 million km2 as the monthly September extent. Just a small increase of 150k since the 23rd September.

For the monthly extent the NSIDC calculates the average sea ice concentration for every pixel and if the concentration is over 15% for the entire month the pixel is counted as ice covered. This is completely independent from daily values.


So for anyone who may not have seen this yet, the NSIDC have announced in their early Nov bulletin that they have changed the way the monthly average sea ice extent is calculated.

The monthly average total extent (and area) are now computed as an average of the daily values over the month.
