The trend suggests about 20 years until mass deep destabilization and emission occurs. The big thing in Svalbard has been the loss of sea ice around its coasts for extended periods and a sharp rise in average annual air temperature, similar to what's been happening across the peripheral Arctic shoreline. Once 1-10m temps reach 0C, the active layer will rapidly deepen every year, leaving a lot of extra time every winter for microbial action to break down the previously trapped carbon.

Anyone else notice that virtually all of the data that is being measured and charted on this wonderful blog shows a disturbing acceleration in the trends. Not content to race towards an unmitigated disaster, we've decided to bury the pedal and accelerate.

We can only assume that permafrost temps are rising wherever we see average surface temperatures rising. This is not just a Svalbard phenomena.

Are we still sure about these 2 centuries?

The entrance tunnel already had to be modified after flooding from molten permafrost. The storage chambers seem to be safe from that.
