With a vast expanse of open water on the Pacific and Siberian sides of the Arctic, the maximum will depend greatly on the early freeze season and this has a great deal to do with FDD.

In general I would have thought that makes good sense.

But just saw this on another post that Andreas T put up. It's from Alfred Wegener Institute who studied Ice thickness above Svalbard. Marcel Nicolaus summarises, “Despite the warm winter, the sea ice wasn’t unusually thin. Our explanation is that the small and thin ice coverage from the previous summer – the second-smallest area ever recorded – grew faster and thicker than in other years, since thin ice grows faster than thick ice.”

The mind boggles !

No argument with this but thin ice cover that has survived the melt season is a lot different than open expanses of water that have had a chance to soak up a lot of energy. I still feel that the Pacific and Siberian sides are likely to freeze very slowly this season. While the Atlantic side is far healthier, I would expect that this ice will expand only very slowly into the Barents as this sea has been under a decades long process of Atlantification. If transport through the Fram were to be anywhere near normal this winter, things will be even worse.

Hi, Espen:
I want to thank you for the work that you made all this years!
Maybe we can do the work for a semester and you can choose to continue the work on the next melting season.

On the mean time, Thanks again!  ;)

Thanx for all the positive comments, I suggest if anyone wants to continue the thread they should apply to Neven, but I warn it is pretty tedious  and sometimes challenging due to break downs and changing report times from ADS. I recall I reported to this thread from many destinations around the world Katmandu , Jomson, Pokhara, New Delhi, Oslo, Paris, Berlin, Amsterdam, Edinburg and from many other places comes to mind and my now favourite place Fejø, a small Danish island.
I will continue to report my glacier observations the part of the climate problem I find most interesting.

I'll echo all the other remarks here in thanking Espen for his tireless efforts over the years in keeping up with SIE. To that end, I've long duplicated his (and many other) popular graphs just for my own education and  entertainment, and for backup purposes in the event the original creator of any particular graph stops for any reason. Here's my version of the 'Espen' IJIS graph:

I'll make it public on my graphs website beginning tomorrow.

Thanks again to Espen for honouring the best daily data source for the past 10 years.

I'm going to lock this thread tomorrow. I'm just not sure what to do next:

1. Start a new JAXA thread.
2. Or let folks discuss JAXA in the general sea ice extent and area thread.

What do you all think?

Doesn't Wipneus automate some of his graphs to update when the data does, on his site? Would that be possible to set up here?

I for one really appreciate the existence of a separate IJIS/JAXA thread, to go to for the latest data with very little discussion. And to look for past comparisons when the need arises.

I get that, but there might not be a new Espen to post daily numbers, and then it might as well go into the general data thread. On the other hand, there isn't that much general data that can be donwloaded, so maybe I should just rename that thread to 'NSIDC SIE and SIA data' and open a new JAXA thread.

I'll decide tomorrow.

If we are to continue the thread, either in present form or renamed, then we should also continue the information format of including a “ ___ lowest” statement as well.

I do not understand the rationale for locking the thread? Instead, I suggest, with respect, that the best way to thank Espen, with sincerity, is to continue the thread in as close to the same format as possible. As a group, we should just post up the data on a daily basis. There have been brief periods of time when Espen announced an absence. During each such episode, others posted up the data on an ad hoc basis.

Could we continue to do that?

This makes the most sense to me. Perhaps we do not get the consistent(daily) posting of data but we can still track this measure.

Tigertown thanks for your contribution.

Personally, and for what it's worth, I agree with keeping this thread alive and provide daily updates even without a graph, just by mentioning extension, difference with previous day, and possibly the ranking for the date. No need to attach a graph necessarily.  It would be a collective effort without putting the burden of a daily update on anyone in particular.

Personally I'm available to give my contribution as needed.
