Leaded Greenland

One of the shocking points that finally ended leaded gasoline was ice cores in Greenland having a huge concentration of lead, showing how widespread the pollution from tetraethyl lead really was.
Now scientists are peering deeper in the ice column and finding they can correlate lead levels in the ice to the economic state of the ancient western mediterranean. Lead levels rose when the economy was good, wars were stopped, and lots of silver coinage was being minted.
