Third Party in the USA

There have been many. Early USA was a free for all. Whigs die out, republican/democrat duopoly follows, with brief challenges by the Bull Moose, Perot, Forbes and such.

Why not ? just money, i suspect. But as we see with trump election, the duopoly is breaking. Both parties are losing credibility by the minute.

Greens ? Libertarians ? or perhaps (gasp!) socialists and communists ?

European plural democracies instead of dual democracies like you have there have no problem in having all of those. What I know of your system the left-wing (Sanders et Al) of the democrats might well be socialists here. I've not heard of any communists in US. I guess driving a policy of ending all subsidies to corporations and taxing them very heavily isn't very popular there, in Europe we have some of these. Fun anecdote: I was commenting on the latest election results to a schoolmate once and he asked:"How's the local communist doing?" I asked:"which one?", to which mate said immediately" the older one". Both of us knew by then who we were talking of and I could say, "still on welfare, still alive and still planning to take over the world". Laughs.

We do have (gasp) two socialistic parties in Finland, your income mainly decides which one to vote...money issues yes. I guess we're too small to have a separate libertarian party, and the greens claim the centrist role.
