Global Warming Is Fueling Arizona’s Monstrous Monsoons

"The new study was published in the Journal of Applied Meteorology and Climatology. Using more detailed and localized precipitation information than is standard for weather data, Castro’s team compared monsoon rainfall throughout the Southwest from two periods — 1950 to 1970 and 1991 to 2010. The team found that Phoenix and many of the state’s low deserts saw rain falling in much more intense bursts. This happened even as the daily average rainfall across most of Arizona decreased by as much as 30 percent in some places."

http://www.climatecentral.org/news/warming-fueling-arizonas-monstrous-monsoons-21679

Actually, the extreme weather in Cali and Az is partly because of the Rediculously Resilent Ridge, a stationary high pressure zone off the coast of Russia/Alaska, that forces the weather patterns south. we have been getting "winter" pressure fronts from Alaska all through the year now, even during monsoon season. The regular stationary high that typically centers over Four Corners country has been displaced completely the last three years, giving northern Az, cooler and wetter summers, even as peak temps have gone up.

http://weatherwest.com/

"What’s causing this extreme inland heat and unusual/uncomfortable SoCal humidity? An unusually persistent ridge has developed somewhat to the west of its typical summertime position over the Desert Southwest, which has favored the occurrence of numerous heatwaves across the CA interior."

From the linked article about summer weather on steroids

Summer on steroids: Fires, devilish heat waves, and floods
Events during the past few months show how warming temperatures combined with natural climate variability are tipping the odds in favor of extreme weather that can cause damage around the world.

Meanwhile, in Chicago, we are continuing a seemingly endless string of gorgeous weather today, 27C, partly cloudy, light breezes from the north.

Last year Vancouver fluked out a nice summer. Enjoy it while it lasts! This summer has been a dungeon.

Iraq sends workers home as 'ungodly' heat grips Middle East

"In Kuwait, where birds have reportedly dropped from the skies, and Riyadh, where building work has ceased this week, locals have called for mercy from a hotter-than-normal air mass that has remained nearly stationary over central Arabia for more than three weeks, stretching the capacity of electricity networks beyond limits."

Looks like a vast yellowish plume of smoke ( http://www.arctic.io/explorer/4Xa5A//4-N90-E0 ) over much of Canada starting about 11 August 2017. Horrible!

Just reading my morning newspaper. Heavy thunderstorms in the Alps near Salzburg caused landslides this week and even created new new lakes in a valley (maybe filled with meltwater from higher altitudes?).

And the newspapers all around Germany and Austria come up with the same text and paradisic bluewater pictures, celebrating the beauty of the new landscape and the positive effects for tourism....

The substance has been identified as chlorine by some, ammonia by others.  It could even be a sulfur compound.  There is no industry for miles in that area, so little chance of spillage.  . Perhaps a sudden release of biogas from bottom sediments?

Western U.S. is in the throes of an extreme heat wave.  San Francisco Bay area utility has a lot full of transformers to replace the many that may blow due to high electricity (air conditioning) use.

San Francisco broke its all time high temp today, 104, beating the previous mark of 103.

I cannot imagine that level of heat in SF.

I don't mean to be an alarmist... Is it just me, or do others also notice the rapid deterioration of the world climate? The world is on fire! (I remember when Jimmy Morrison sang that) Fires no longer behave as Firefighters expect them to. Places around the world are breaking their hottest temperatures yearly and it's almost too hot for humans to survive in many places. Severe famine is effecting so many people and crops are unable to grow in many places. There are super hurricanes and flooding to an extent and to levels that have never been seen. I'm finding it really hard to go to work and try to convince my clients they have no reason to be anxious!   :'(

That's why I'm really hoping for a hiatus in temps, even if I have to put up with "no warming since 2016" bs. If temperatures climb like they did in the 90's we are screwed.

Chicago has just completed a remarkably mild summer, something that has become a pattern over the past decade. We now are looking at a string of days around 90F when the normal highs are 72F at this time of year.

Mount Washington (New Hampshire) shatters high temperature record
Quote
PINKHAM NOTCH, N.H. —
Recent hot weather in northern New England has reached Mount Washington, which experienced three consecutive days of record-high temperatures.

It reached 67 degrees [F, 19.4°C] Tuesday at the highest peak in the Northeast, the warmest Sept. 26 on record. Mount Washington Observatory Meteorologist Adam Gill tells the Boston Globe that it was 8 degrees hotter than the previous high of 59 degrees, set in 1961.

Tuesday also was the hottest day this year recorded at the 6,288-foot New Hampshire summit, where it was snowing just a few weeks earlier. ...

Highly unusual.  The Sunday low was 75, breaking the record of 74 that was set in 1898, and tied in 1941.  1941 still has the record for highest monthly temperature of 96, set on the 5th.  That was followed by highs of 92 and 95 on the following days, and 2007 is still the warmest month, with an average temperature of 67.7.  Through the first 10 days of the month, 2017 is still cooler (average temperature of 71.3) than the warmest years of 2007 (avg 75.8) and 1941 (avg 75.7).

Based on pure statistics, any location with a temperature record of 120 years should experience three new daily highs maximums and minimums, along with a similar number of new daily lows.  Currently in 2017, Washington DC has set 2 daily high maximums (both in Feb.), 0 low maximums, 10 daily low maximums (6 in the winter, 1 in spring, 1 in summer, and 2 in so far in the fall), and 0 low minimums.  Nothing too surprising, as the nights continue to warm.

California heat wave:

There’s never been a 100°F+ World Series [baseball] game. That’s because they’re played in October and November.
Seasons aren’t what they used to be.

103° in Los Angeles [an hour ago]. 1st pitch for #DodgersVsAstros at 5:09pm. Good chance it is still 100° at that time.

The "10" is where the temperature goes. Only room for two digits, apparently.

Will the U.S. tackle climate change as aggressively as they tackled the Y2K problem?
Or... will they simply switch to °C?  ;)

U.S.:  The Executive Branch wants to cripple storm forecasting just when it's getting good — and we need it most.  Cutbacks to important services are already happening.

..., the degree of warmth being observed at night in Miami (and Ft Lauderdale) in 2017 is just insane. #climate #climatechange
     https://twitter.com/johnmoralesnbc6/status/923005594180632576

71 days with low temps at or above 80F in Miami (MIA) this year. Previous record? 45 in 2010. 10 year rolling average was 20 ending in 2000. 25 in 2010. Currently 31.  Cold front on Wednesday will end this mess for 2017. #endofFLwetseason #flwx

The succulent seems to be doing well.

So the traditional jack-o-lantern pumpkins need to give way to... carved cacti?
