Yes, North America has a huge unrelenting cold blob (and here in the northeast we might have a blizzard Thursday followed by several more even colder days before letup to normal freezing temps). It's hard to convince dedicated unskeptical "skeptics" (deniers) that this is part of the planetary disruption due to global warming.

Show them this, this explains already a little bit. There is an area in the middle that's pretty hot for being the arctic.

Yes, it is called the Gulf Stream, and it is the reason that England (which is further north than Calgary) and Edinburgh (which is similar in latitude to Fort Severn on the Hudson Bay) have such mild temperatures.

A bit over 5" [127 mm] of snow at the NWS Office in Charleston, [South Carolina].  That makes today the 3rd snowiest day on record at Charleston (records go back to 1938).  Top 2 on the list are 6.0" on December 23, 1989 and 5.4" on February 10, 1973.

This storm is now, officially, a #BombCyclone.
Its central pressure has dropped 29mb in the past 16 hours, beating the 24mb/24hrs requirement.
It gets better: In the next 8hrs, it'll drop another 23mb.
52mb in 24hrs. One of the fastest intensifying cyclones ever measured.

Gif at the link.

Incredible: Bomb cyclone is drawing moisture from deep in the Caribbean. Look at how far south it extends.

What a trip!  The air mass over southeast Florida this morning can trace its heritage back to the Dakotas and Canada on Dec 27-28!  Of course, its temperature has moderated by about 60°F since then...

New record for a U.S. east coast winter storm:

Officially a 54mb drop in 24 hours, per @NWS.
Nothing comes close to that intensification rate in the satellite record (since the late 1970s.) (Historical analyses by @DRmetwatch and @alopezlang)

Get used to saying ‘bomb cyclone.’ This is our climate now.
Quote
Now that one of the strongest nor’easters on record has swirled off to Canada, it’s time to talk about what everyone was thinking during the storm: Is this just what happens now?

Short answer: yes. Get used to it. Wild storms like this week’s massive coastal cyclone will be part of winters in the Anthropocene.
...
All this atmospheric drama overshadowed two other storms underway at the same time. A sprawling cyclone even stronger than the “bomb cyclone” plowed past Alaska, where the ocean should be covered in ice this time of year. In Europe, a powerful ocean storm made landfall in the British Isles. It arrived with a cold front whose strong winds fanned midwinter wildfires on the French Mediterranean island of Corsica and closed down ski slopes in the Alps for fear of avalanches.
...
http://grist.org/article/get-used-to-saying-bomb-cyclone-this-is-our-climate-now/

Not just Boston. This coastal flooding is in Ireland today. It's what happens when you 1) raise sea level 2) melt the Arctic

The blast of arctic air over the past two weeks drove frost deeper into the ground. Current frost depths range from 14 inches in St. Paul to 30 inches in Bloomer. #mnwx #wiwx

This is why it is standard to dig footings to 4 feet in the Upper Midwest, USA in order to avoid frost heave. The frost can go very deep if the snow isn't deep, which is the case in much of Minnesota and southern Wisconsin. Where I live in Wisconsin, we've had 1-2 inches of snow on the ground since the cold air arrived about three weeks ago, and the temperature has ranged from -28C to -11C during that entire period (average coldest winter temperature is about -28C, so magnitude of cold is not exception, but the duration has been tough).

Reporting normal, but warmish temperatures from here and gladly accepting this chart that the local weather service has started to give out to public too. Nothing dramatic here, look away. Still wish they'd put in their name and the start date of the chart, but m ok to add those. start date here is 2017.12.08 - though it could well be 2016.12.08. no dramatic diff here either. Please look away.

June and December anomalies side by side. 2004-2017. Pesky AGW, disturbing our Christmas and Midsummer celebrations. Real temps are sometimes the same nowadays.

Swedes generally complain about warm and wet Christmases and cold and wet Midsummers.
Still, on Friday we agreed with the US and the other Nordic states that we must take a “precautionary approach” or rather "do very little approach" to oil and gas drilling in the Arctic because we want more.

The BBC is explaining the freeze in the USA as the result of a "bomb cyclone".

Limiting google searches to the previous week, I got 77 results for

Quote
"bomb cyclone"  usa  site:bbc.co.uk

I got 7 results for

Quote
"climate change" usa  site:bbc.co.uk

I got 2 results for

Quote
"bomb cyclone"  "climate change" usa  site:bbc.co.uk

The only significant mention of climate change and bomb cyclones was

Quote
Mayor Marty Walsh [of New Hampshire's Mount Washington]
blamed climate change. "If anyone wants to question global warming,
just see where the flood zones are," he said.

Also last night I watched an item on the BBC News Channel about the US freeze. My transcript ...
Quote
Q: Are we going to see more of this in the coming months/years?

A: Well as the waters of the worlds oceans are warming up a
little bit it does give more fuel to these systems so it is
likely we will see increased frequencies of these type of
events - rapidly evolving storms and severe cold snaps as
well in their wake.

Well that's it

the worlds oceans are warming up a little bit

So, not much to worry about.

While The Eastern U.S. Freezes, It's Too Warm In Alaska
Quote
The race in southwest Alaska had been scheduled to happen two weeks before. But warm weather — just above freezing — made the trails unsafe. Temperatures dropped and a dusting of snow fell. The entire race usually runs 35 miles up the frozen river. This time it had to run over land.

The river ice in some areas was feet thick in past years. It's now only inches. In other places, there's open water. This is a problem in a region with no roads connecting one village to another — locals refer to the river as an ice highway. ...

Not much extremes here, some flooding in Småland (south). A bit clearer skies and somewhat chillier a couple of days. But more clouds coming according to forecasts so my solar panels will have to rest a bit longer. The ensembles indicates a decline in temperatures a couple of weeks from now so maybe we will have some real winter i February. Maybe. In advance, I actually thought that we in Scandinavia would get a colder winter, considering the easterly QBO, ice free Barents/Kara and a lazy polar vortex.
But I guess it's America first, even in weather. :)

 ;D

Here in southern Austria we're still waiting for winter. No snow, no freezing temps (had a little bit of both at the beginning of December). Can someone send us some of that Global Cooling?

This is the anecdotal stories thread yes? :)

In other parts of Småland the snow cannons are bothering the neighbors' night's sleep: "Is a giant problem"

Snow cannons running hot a bit further south at one of the three nominees for the ski resort of the year by SLAO.

And oh, a bit earlier PMT inspired me to post a quote from SLAO here:

Hilarious, isn't it?

Yes, Australia does tend to get hot this time of year.  However, except for New South Wales and a few surrounding areas, the temperatures are not all that unusual.

It's So Hot In Australia Roads Are Melting and Bats Are Falling Out of the Sky
Quote
In what’s becoming an annual rite of passage each summer, a monster heat wave has blanketed nearly all of Australia. Bats boiling alive, crews scrambling to combat brush fires, roads melting, and cricket players keeling over are just a handful of the apocalyptic-sounding impacts.

Heat has always been a part of Australian life. But scientists have warned that the Land Down Under has tipped into a new state where climate change is making almost every heat wave stronger and longer.

This year’s early January heat wave has been most pronounced in New South Wales, Australia’s most populous state. Temperatures topped out at 47.3 degrees Celsius (117 degrees Fahrenheit) on Sunday in Sydney’s far western suburbs, making them the hottest place on the planet. According to the Sydney Morning Herald, that’s the hottest temperature ever recorded in the Sydney region. While the city itself was cooler, the heat still caused the highest daily water use in 15 years. ...

Snow in the Sahara.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/world-africa-42627090/snow-falls-in-the-sahara-desert

for the third time in 40 years and who knows about earlier records, further independent of this specific spots there are mountainous areas in morocco and elsewhere where snowfall is common.

so it's true but the title as a standalone statement without further information is one of those true statements often used to mislead average people by omitting important details.

Agreed.  Similar to saying that it is snowing in Hawaii, which is an annual occurrence.

On connections between torrential rainfall from tropical cyclones and earthquakes:

https://phys.org/news/2018-01-heavy-tropical-cyclones-distort-ground.html
Title: Study suggests heavy rains from tropical cyclones distort the ground below

Excerpt:

The new study in Geophysical Research Letters, a journal of the American Geophysical Union, finds that compression of Earth's crust is correlated with heavy rainfall from hurricanes and typhoons, known collectively as tropical cyclones. The added weight of all that water likely causes the ground underneath the storm to deform, according to the study's authors.

...

The results of the new study call into question whether tropical cyclones can trigger earthquakes. An earlier study published in the journal Nature suggested that dilatation of the Earth's crust by cyclones triggered slow earthquakes that caused compression of the crust. But the new study suggests that heavy rainfall, rather than slow earthquakes, causes compression.

The amount of ground deformation detected by the strainmeters in the new study is similar in strength to local seismic events, sometimes as strong as magnitude 5 earthquakes. However, they take place over a longer span of time. Strain associated with earthquakes occurs within seconds to minutes, while strain induced by tropical cyclones happens over several hours to days.

Storm Friederike has been causing havoc and fatalities across Europe:

http://www.dutchnews.nl/news/archives/2018/01/three-people-are-killed-as-winter-storm-batters-the-netherlands/

Quote
Two people have been killed by falling trees in the Netherlands as winds of up to 120 kph battered the country on Thursday morning.

In Enschede, a 62-year-old person was killed when the car he was driving was hit by a tree brought down in the gale force winds. And in Zwolle, a 62-year-old man died when he was hit on the head by a branch, news agency ANP said.

In Lingewaal, south of Utrecht, a 64-year-old man was killed and another injured when they fell through what police said was a ‘plexiglass construction’ on a private industrial estate.

Dozens of people have also been injured by falling trees and flying debris. The centre of Almere was closed off to passersby because of the danger posed by flying glass.

Schiphol airport was closed for a time because of the strong cross winds but services began to pick up speed again in the early afternoon. All rail services remained suspended at 13.30 but some trains were running in Groningen and Limburg.

The death toll is now more than three.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-42731505

Quote
Eight people including two firefighters have been killed in storm-related accidents as hurricane-strength winds tear across northern Europe.

Both firefighters were helping with clean-up efforts in Germany when they died.

Many of those killed, in the Netherlands and in Germany, were hit by falling trees and debris. One died in a collision when his van was blown on to the other side of the road.

The storm has now crossed to Poland.

meanwhile in N. Ireland at 55m asl we are enjoying our 14 snow day this winter . Today is the 6th accumulation of snow and the 8th significant fall . Considering we have had a total of only 3 snow days in the last 3 years this is unusual .

Storm Friederike has been causing havoc and fatalities across Europe:

Storm Friederike has caused at least 800 million euros of insured losses.  We should all remember that Hanson now has grandchildren, so his warning of "Storms of My Grandchildren" means now:

Temperatures in the Northeast are absolutely absurd.  It's 60 degrees today in Boston and will not dip much below freezing for the next 2 weeks.

This is typical April weather, and it's January.

After that extreme cold spell earlier this month, subsequent weather has already caught us up to within half a degree C of the 1981-2010 monthly average in the Milwaukee, WI area, and it looks likely we'll push into above average territory, and that would be pretty astounding. The cold spell set no daily records for us, but subsequently we've set two daily record highs. We had strong thunderstorms yesterday evening,  which gave way to snow, but it looks likely to be melted again by the end of this week.
