Australian Politics
« on: May 23, 2022, 11:39:28 AM »
The good news is that we got rid of Scott Morrison and the rest of his Fossil Fuel loving fossils.

The bad news is that the new Labor Party PM Anthony Albanese had to abandon most the party's climate change policy to win.  The problem is that there are too may employed by the gas and coal industries and they are huge donors to the conservatives.    Workers in those industries voted conservative in 2019 because they saw their jobs threatened.

So it will be interesting to see what, if anything, Labor can do.  There were big gains by the greens and the so-called "Teal Independents".  The Greens and the Teal Independents won the vote of those conservative voters in the wealthier inner city seats who actually know that climate change is real and are disappointed with the way their party has been captured by the ultra conservatives and fossil fuel industry.  They may hold the balance of power in both upper and lower houses, forcing Albanese to negotiate with them.

Interesting times ahead.

Well said, that's the same as I see it.

I agree.

Labor are still under pressure by the fossil fuel industry, and while they have targets that are respectable, the timeline to get there is 2050.
The Greens want 2035 so maybe there is room there for Labor to pass the buck of climate action to the Greens without having to deal directly with fossil fuel giants?

I was hoping that Labor wouldnt get a majority and would have to make a working partnership with the Greens, but it looks like Labor will get to 76.

As for the LNP... Dutton will probably lead them for a few years. I consider him a monster, but I doubt he will lead LNP into the next election.

Labor really need to do something special this term because Australia tends to return to LNP quickly and we cant afford that anymore in terms of environment and climate action. We have already lost too many years.

Next election in 4 years time or do you run a different schedule?

3 year schedule for federal politics, some states have a 4 year schedule.

A new Govt brings a better approach.

The first indication is a surge in carbon prices.

And a change of approach on fossil fuels and their companies.

Hopefully this is the beginning of the good news in Australia.

The Former Prime Minister of Australia has long been label as very corrupt.
Now there has been a change in leadership and party, it turns out this is true.

During his premiership he took on five important ministries as a means to control what was happening on a personal level.
He had set himself up so decisions that should have been done my ministers were made directly by him.

In short, this is about as close as Australia has come to a dictatorship, and if they had won the election, who knows how much further this would have gone.

This story has just broken so there will be more information coming, but it should be a reminder that politics is not immune to corruption regardless of where it happens... and what Morrison has done, along with his sidekicks, is truly disgusting.
Of course, those who worked with him are pleading ignorance... not sure how that is possible though.

It´s one weird story. Also he did not always inform his fellow ministers. It´s one of those you would not dream it up scenarios so keep us posted.  :)

The story is still unfolding, but the way I understand it is Morrison signed himself up to be the ministers in secret, didn't tell the actual minister, didn't inform the people in the correct processes, made decisions while he was able to, didn't inform the public, and is currently making up stories about Covid being extreme so extreme measures were needed.

Morrison also enacted emergency powers of parliament that allowed him and a few others to make decisions without due process.... that is still being looked into so this story is far from over.

Morrison is the most corrupt Australia politicians ever.
The way I look at it now, and have for years is Morrison and his buddies (who still hold significant positions in that party) were working toward a dictatorship of some sort that is dressed as a democracy.
And the Governor General let it happen as well, the one person who should have stopped a lot of this stuff did nothing about it.

Our system is very broken.

On the flip side, the current Govt is looking into how to stop a repeat, and the two major parties are losing a lot of voters to independents.
Independents who are the real reason anything is starting to happen in regards to environmental issues and climate change because the current Govt is still bought but fossil fuel companies.

Morrison did a press conference to explain his actions.
Nobody is really believing him, including his own party.

The Australien Honest Government Ads season is over too soon.
Morrison's lust for power is just right for an Honest Government Ad.

They had a holiday after the election.
They released one video a week or so ago about the US so they are back now.
They are going to focus a little less on Australia and give other countries some honest adverts as well... so now other countries are about to how the Honest Ad treatment this year.
