Now with temperatures that "hoover" ( I know I may not use the word correctly, hope you know what I mean) around the melt/freezing point it does not take big temperature rise to start melting again.
I guess you mean "hover" - a bird can hover, helicopters as well. A "hoover" is a vacuum cleaner, named after the company to first make them generally available, founded by William Henry Hoover (anglicized from German Huber).
because a thing is eloquently expressed it should not be taken to be as necessarily true

GIF not playing

Sorry about that, it should work now. Since this animation is from a day later, the century increase is not the last frame but one earlier.

Thanks for the explanation, I will try to remember since the spell check won't  help me here.

The animation looks very much like an early refreeze of the inner "slushy" areas, much as expected but a week earlier than I thought.

What do you think for the next few days.
Area/Extent is good this year, producing of cold air is possible.
Do you think that more then -200k is possible.
Which parts of the arctic will melt the next time and which are refreezing.
I think this year is very surprising after the beginning of the melt seasonl.
Maybe there is a link between fragmented ice in autumn and better ice in the next year, because the high temps n80 show also that many heat went in the space.

The extent decline resumes, extent is now again at the lowest value this year. Not likely to happen for area that increased again, gap is about 250k, resulting in a very early date for the (preliminary) minimum, first of September.

Little to comment about today's extent drop, it is small and regionally nothing stands out. The small area drop is mostly in the CAB and ESS.

Animation of the ESS and Laptev edge. The increasing concentration in the packs interior can be seen. The ice facing the Laptev looks a bit strange to me, it looks like two packs separated by a crack that opens and closes again. How can the cohesion be expalined?

That's an interesting feature. It is clearly visible in the Sentinel 1 SAR image as well.

...The ice facing the Laptev looks a bit strange to me, it looks like two packs separated by a crack that opens and closes again. How can the cohesion be expalined?
Striking how closely the shape of the ice appears to match the bathymetry. The ice edge appears to correlate with the termination of the deep water.

Concerning the crack, the bathymetry map shows the deep water is split almost evenly into two basins - the Amundsen Basin on the Pacific side and the Nansen Basin on the Atlantic side - separated by the Nansen-Gakkol Ridge.

Could the edge of the ice be determined in large part by the edge of the deep water? Further, could the crack in the ice, along with its terminating lead (is that a manifestation of the frequently appearing "Laptev Bite"?), correlate with the Nansen-Gakkol Ridge?

The total extent and area numbers are strongly influenced by the CAA figures. Without that extent would have dropped a little and area would have dropped much stronger.
Minimum area for 2017 was still at 1 September, -200k below today.

Extent: +10.7 (+521k vs 2016, +278k vs 2015, -400k vs 2014, -367k vs 2013, +1178k vs 2012)
Area: -28.1 (+646k vs 2016, +280k vs 2015, -301k vs 2014, -424k vs 2013, +1089k vs 2012)

You will find the updated graphs in the top post

In September Greenland ice normally increases (extent and area) due to increased Fram Strait export. Not this September until now, heading for a record low at a record late date.

Is there anything to export?

Lack of Fram Export, but export to the Beaufort sea, Garlic Press and Nares strait export. Some of exported MYI may survive next season though

First time I've heard anyone call ice moving into the Beaufort as export.

There's no probability for 3 and thicker metres ice to be melted in CAB, but this may happen in the Beaufort or CAA. CAB lose its best MYI reserves that's why I call it export despite the overall SIE could be higher for a while

Export doesn't mean what you think it means. Yes the ice moves around and the Beaufort was a killing ground for MYI last year. This year there was very little MYI in the Beaufort to melt. Last year, the Atlantic side, ice north of Svalbard and Franz Josef, was decimated but this year the ice here proved relatively resilient. It would be no more accurate to call ice moving into this area export IMHO.

Increases in extent and area. It is near certain that minimum area was reached at 1st of September, we are now +267k above that day. Extent is only +46k above the preliminary minimum from the 11th, still possible to go below that.

There was one of those dodgy area downspikes that JAXA didn't follow at the beginning of the month. Its not surprising if that turns out to be the minimum.

Yes, two notes:

- the "spike" lasted 11-12 days, see attached.
- Jaxa area reached minimum on the 11th, just -50k below the value on the first.

Animation of the CAA. The "garlic press" in operation. The last frame shows an interesting web of cracks in the MY ice north of the islands.

There was a nice Sentinel-1 radar swath of that area the other day, a 1km resolution convenient mosaic at R Saldo's http://www.seaice.dk

That Beaufort tongue is quite persistent; the ESRL melt picture for Sept 15 shows ongoing melt there, mostly from the bottom. The wind (vector overlay, 4th image) starts to pick up on the 18th as expected from the predicted low pressure cyclonic event.

Arctic Basin animation in 6.25km resolution.

EDIT: I have tried this now in a few dozen variations, including size, resolution, nr. of frames. Nothing works, switching from https to http which used to help in the past is no longer allowed. I will try later to see if it a temporary glitch.

EDIT2: same file uploaded, works now. Patience seems to be needed.

That's weird. I downloaded it, but it shows up as a single image (also in my animated gif software).

That is the symptom. During upload only one frame is preserved, the rest is lost. Usually I shave of a few pixels, or in bad cases delete a a whole frame until it works. Perhaps being patient would have been enough.

I will check tomorrow if I can change anything as admin (have a splitting headache right now). If I can't find anything, I'll notify DM yet again.  :)

Wip, I may have found something under Attachment settings, a function called 'Re-encode potentially dangerous image attachments':

Quote
Selecting this option will enable trying to re-encode the uploaded image attachments. Image re-encoding offers better security. Note however that image re-encoding also renders all animated images static.

Could you give it another shot to see if the animated gif works?

Oh, wait, can do that myself too, of course:

At Neven's request here is a Basin wide animation in the full 3.125km resolution. That is the one that did get passed the last time.

RESULT: works perfectly at the first try (must click of course).
