Region of the day is the Canadian Archipelago. Apart from the CAB this is the region with the most consistent ice regrowth. No late open NW passage I assume.

Growth from the ice edge is starting to "eat" the Laptev Open Water.

The remnant ice in Kara is unusual for recent years.  From your animation, looks like it hit minimum around the 21st.

Image of the day is Laptev. The wind field of a cyclone near the pole is moving the ice edge with it.

Sequence of the Fram Strait and Victoria Channel. Very little of the mobile ice is exported.

Just below Svalbard the ice edge looks like it is cut-off. That is probably the result of the application of a too aggressive ocean mask.

Update 20140925.

Extent: +71k0 (-66k vs 2013, +1419k vs 2012)
Area: +86k2 (-132k vs 2013, +1327k vs 2012)

Most of the increases today are in the CAA region, where more channels are freezing over. The CAB and the ESS continue increasing as well.

Today's image is from the ESS. Despite southerly winds the region has been sharply increasing in the last few days. The extensive field of low concentration ice is fast looking more "solid" (it is not of course, just thin new ice cover open water now).

After the Nares Strait "unblocked" in July very little ice could be seen going south that way. With more favorable winds that situation seems to change now.

Region of the day is the Beaufort. The ice edge is advancing as almost everywhere else.

Update 20140927.

Extent: -11k0 (-115k vs 2013, +1401k vs 2012)
Area: -5k9 (-204k vs 2013, +1305k vs 2012)

An unexpected drop in extent, small as it is. All regions have only small changes, so has the freezing stopped?

The region of the day is Chukchi. Here we see the ice edge retreating big way due to southerly winds, probably loaded with Pacific heat. The affected ice is in the CAB region actually, continuing refreezing elsewhere compensates  for the local decline.

Update 20140927.

Area: -5k9 (-204k vs 2013, +1305k vs 2012)

This could mean 2014 extent will go from 7th to 5th in just two days, as anticipated by my graph script. It also falls neatly into the 1000 day descent of the Yearly Mean Extent started on Saturday. Exciting!

I'd hazard a guess that we're seeing the result of heat input into arctic latitudes by way of some of the remnants of recent cyclones moving north.
This space for Rent.

Area: -10k8 (-321k vs 2013, +1194k vs 2012)

Small extent increase and even a drop in area. It is all due to the CAB that shows these declines. Cause is an Arctic low north of Franz Josef Lands that will no doubt rebound after it passed. Strong continuing refreeze in the CAA is remarkable.

I selected the Barents section (region + part of the CAB) as image of the day. A beautiful low is stirring things up there with some drop in concentration. The concentration will be restored soon, and we can speculate on increased bottom melt due to the Ekman Pumping.

Very fascinating. Extent has dropped below both 2013 and 2010 over the weekend and is now 5th lowest. Working on 2008 as the next target. Maybe slow October refreeze is the new melt? :D

Of course there are more places where the ice is extending. For instance in the Kara sector where ice is moving due to the Arctic cyclone that has haunted the neighborhood the last few days.

Today's big increase in the Greenland Sea is due to some very flimsy ice. I am not sure if that is "refreezing".

This concludes the daily reports on the regional state of Arctic Sea Ice based on Uni Hamburg concentration calculation from the AMSR2 instrument from Jaxa. Thank you all for the attention and encouragements during this season.

Note that the daily data will still be updated:
- data in https://sites.google.com/site/arctischepinguin/home/amsr2/data/UH_AMSR2_3.125km_Area_Extent-v0.0.txt
- graphics: https://sites.google.com/site/arctischepinguin/home/amsr2/grf

Note that the Uni Hamburg data is still marked as experimental and changes/recalculations are planned although I have no idea when.

In the freezing season I intent to:
- continue reporting at slower rates;
- work on refinement of calculations and improve its documentation;
- improve the ArctischePinguin website;
- research some new stuff.

First thank you all for the kind words, it has been a lot of fun.

Then there is this animation of the Canadian Archipelago. For the last few days the CAA has been one of the regions with the biggest gain in area and extent (Greenland Sea is the other).
The ice growth has not affected the mobility of the ice much, apart from some blocking the northern channels, ice in the central an southern parts is in constant motion.

Update 20141007.
Changes from 20141001.

Extent: +421k7 (-334k vs 2013, +1432k vs 2012)
Area: +385k8 (-338k vs 2013, +1291k vs 2012)

First of a freezing season update which I intent to post at more or less regular intervals.
In the first week most regions in the Arctic Basin are refreezing. Notable slow are the Laptev (the open water is still vast) and Barents Seas. Little or no growth is shown outside the Basin.

You will find the updated graphs in the top post

A delta image of the total shows the expanding ice. Just on the Atlantic side and the East Siberian Sea the expanse is slow or even negative.

Animation of the Laptev sector. The deep branch of the Laptev open water is quickly filling up. There is no sign of large scale ice transports, as in all other regions of the Arctic Basin.
Some flimsy ice flares near the coast are (I think) the first signs of the forming of the land fast ice.

Update 20141014.
Changes from 20141007.

Extent: +783.7 (-506k vs 2013, +1499k vs 2012)
Area: +756.1 (-518k vs 2013, +1380k vs 2012)

Reporting the changes in the second week of the season starting in October. Strong refreeze with century increases on averagefor both extent and area. All regions withing the Arctic Basin contribute with CAB, Kara and Laptev increasing most. The ESS that had a slow start in the first week is picking up speed now. As can be seen in the attached changed image, land fast ice is starting to form on the Asian side (ESS to Kara), very little in the Chukchi and Beaufort regions.

An animation of the CAB shows no large scale ice transports. There is export though the Nares Strait  though. The mega crack north of the Canadian Archipelago is in part permanently visible.

Area and extent are increasing with near maximum rates right now:

date: 20141017.

Extent: +193k8 (-408k vs 2013, +1154k vs 2012)
Area: +189k3 (-458k vs 2013, +1085k vs 2012)

The epicenter  is the Kara Sea where the ice has spread over large area's of the Kara Sea, see attached animation.

Update 20141021.
Changes from 20141014.

Extent: +1055.8 (-267k vs 2013, +1125k vs 2012)
Area: +947.5 (-429k vs 2013, +1042k vs 2012)

Reporting the changes in arctic sea ice during past week. Overall strong refreeze with on average 150k/day extent increase. The focus is on the Eurasian side, with the Kara region attributing most, followed by Laptev  and the west part of the East Siberian Sea. In these regions we see ice growing both from the edge of the central ice pack and from the coasts.  Not so on the pacific side from the eastern part of the ESS , via Chukchi to Beaufort. Here ice moving with the winds show a mix of increase and declines.

Strong southern winds over the Barents Sea push back the ice edge. Likewise in the Greenland Sea, and the ice is pulling back from north Svalbard.

Update 20141028.
Changes from 20141021.

Extent: +885.6 (+115k vs 2013, +1248k vs 2012)
Area: +881.4 (-22k vs 2013, +1144k vs 2012)

Reporting the changes in the past week. Increases in area and extent are still strong (+125k) and bring the extent to well above the 2013 numbers. Area will probably do the same looking at the speed in the last few days. Regionally most of the refreeze is on the Eurasian side  with the Laptev region seeing the Laptev Open Water nearly disappearing in a few days. Very active freezing is also in the Canadian Archipelago where the remaining southern channels are now also filled with ice. As shown yesterday Barents and Greenland Sea have seen declines due to southern winds.
