Independence Fjord / Hagen Fjord / North Greenland.

Independence Fjord is one of the large fjords of Greenland, contain 2 glaciers Marie Sophie Gletscher and Academy Gletscher.
Not much action was seen here during the last 30 years, Academy Gletscher did some movements forth and back, though.
In the Independence branch fjord Hagen Fjord is Hagen Bræ situated, and there the situation is much different. This Glacier retreated approximately 20 km since 1978, and about 12 km alone since 2003.

To be cont. first post lost :o

Very topical for the day. Now the sea ice breaks up into Indepence Fjord and Hagen Fjord from Wandel Sea, and that shows the fast ice is out for some tough days ahead in North East Greenland.

More from Independence Fjord etc.:

The cracking is clearly seen above Prinsesse Margrethe Ø (2.) and Prinsesse Thyra Ø (1.).

To cont. with the retreat of Hagen Bræ in Hagen Fjord, North Greenland. I have with the aid of Landsat images, a pretty painful experience and very large files, but I think I got there. My goal is to minimize the tress hold of understanding what a retreat of a glacier really is, and the easiest way in my opinion is by images, as the saying goes An image is worth a thousand words, and less translations problems.

The reasons and explanation for the retreat I will leave with others, to explain.

The 1978 calving front, is based on old aerial images from GEUS, Copenhagen since no satellite images are available. Look further up in thread.

Please click on the images to enlarge, the Landsat images (blue) are very big!

Seems as if the two small islands in Hagen Fjord had supported and possibly slowed the movement of ice. Do we know if the ice has sped up since the calving front shrunk past these islands.

I don't know to be honest, but is has been retreating a few kms since leaving the island support, I guess it is all depending how much floating ice tongue that is left, when we reach the "beach" I believe it will slow down again, and go into in-situ melt mode, as many other floating glaciers tend to do, if necessary.

Retreat of both Academy Gletscher and Marie Sophie Gletscher North Greenland. Over the period from 1999 to 2103.
Marie Sophie Gletscher only showed a small retreat since 1999, only about a few hundred meters.

Academy Gletscher retreated 2,2 km since 1999, far less than the neighbor glacier Hagen Bræ in Hagen Fjord, explained above in the thread.

Looking at this  animation, it would appear as if that spit of land that is thrusting out into the glacier is wreaking havoc on this side of the glacier. (bottom of the image) The calving face is much further inland, the glacier heavily crevassed and the the icebergs calved are rubble in appearance.

Have you done analysis on any of the glaciers that you study to get a sense of the effects of the topography with regards to calving?

Shared Humanity,

Very little is known about these glaciers, for obvious reasons, the IceBridge team never did regular trips across this part of Greenland, although Hagen Bræ retreated substantially over the last 30 years.

But maybe Sidd our topography wizard got something in his toolbox?

Just a reminder, this is Hagen Bræ, situated in Hagen Fjord a part of the Independence Fjord system, as you can see the glacier retreated dramatically in less than 10 years:

The width of this glacier is +/- 9,8 km, measured at the present calving front.

I realized something was wrong with the previous animation.

Here come the 4th and last "Fever Test" for this time, this time from the Academy Gletscher and Independence Fjord Area, the "lower" part of North Greenland .
Since the Landsat Images from this part of Greenland (too far north) is hard to retrieve before the 80ties, I include an image from as late as 1987 in the animation vs. 2014, but this still tells the story of retreating Ice Caps and even Glaciers, I hope the 3 other "Fever Tests" from the South, West and East of Greenland, can assist you to understand what is going on in and around Greenland?

I realized something was wrong with the previous animation.

For a proper comparison, don't the images need to be from the same month perhaps ideally within a few days of typical time of minimum snow extent?

Crandles, I know, but since July is earlier than August in the melt season, I still think it only underscores the point? (the opposite would be very wrong) and I don't have the images from August 2014 yet ;)

Crandles, I know, but since July is earlier than August in the melt season, I still think it underscores the point?

That depends on whether the point is 'look how much things have changed!' or 'look at how little things have changed!'.

My reaction in several cases has been, yes there is change but it has taken a long time to make fairly small differences. The full difference will be a bit bigger but I am not really sure how much bigger.

They are great anyway and I really appreciate your time and effort making them available.

But the area in the animation represents a ~900 km2 area, in that context, I think it is impressive?
I believe if you moved that piece of land to southern Texas or Italy those ice caps would not melt in one summer season?

Under present circumstances very slow glacier. By the way what kind of access do you have to get that info?(Admire your work, just giving you a hard time over a typo. surprised no one else picked it up)

The sea ice (semi fast) is giving in at the mouth of Indepence Fjord and Danmark Fjord between G. B. Schley Fjord (1.) Hellefisk Fjord (2.) and Flade Isblink (3.), that is very unusual since it normally break up from inside the fjords. (Althoug it almost behaved similar in 2013)

Academy Gletscher the other grand glacier in Independence Fjord is more or less status quo compared to 2013, some will maybe call it advancing?

Hagen Bræ update:

Hagen Bræ is one of the less known glaciers of Greenland but with a calving front of almost 9 km it is pretty big, even during the winter season this glacier is moving and calving, my measurement is about 2,6 m per 24 hrs, the glacier retreated considerably during the 30 years (read above or see below):

30 years update Academy Gletscher, which is situated in the bottom of Indepence Fjord and a neighbor gletscher to Hagen ("just" around the corner), as can be seen on the animation below, did Academy Gletscher retreat some 2,2 km at some parts of the calving front.
Much more calving activities where seen around 1985 and it looks like Acedemy has come to a point where calvings are rare, maybe we are at the grounding line already?

Note: The darker image in the animation is from 2015

Apparently, the front of the Academy Gletscher as well as a substantial part of its trough is below sea level (see nr. 163 on page 35).

I read somewhere that on 7 of 55 marine-terminating glaciers in Greenland still have not-just-seasonal ice shelves.

Like this adaptive contrast enhancement? it's free and fast.

Here is another big calving this time at Hagen Bræ, as promissed on July 11, this calving happened between July 12 (yesterday) and today, please note we are in record territory (retreat):

I have discussed this glacier with Mauri Pelto, and we believe the dark surface at the front of the glacier is indicating the floating part of the glacier, the rest is grounded.

More calving and retreat at Hagen Bræ between July 13 and July 19 2015:

PS: Note the fast melt of sea ice, and if the theory of Mauri and I is right we are close to the grounding line at the lower part of calving front seen in the animation.

The new moon (August 14 2015) started a chain reaction in both glaciers and sea ice around Greenland, here is one of the more interesting ones sea ice wise, it is the combined mouth of Independence Fjord and Danmark Fjord in the very north of Greenland
This also indicates 2015 is a special year melt/ sea ice wise, because the collapse of the sea ice in the mouth of these fjords, only happened in 2009 or 2010 last time (if my memory is up to date), and is very similar to what is seen in and around the Canadian Archipelago (Sverdrup Channel , Nansen Sound etc.) this season:

Really nice image :)

I struggle to imagine that much snow being blown out from half way up the cliff. Is some (even most or all) cloud rather than snow?

I have seen clouds lying over snow before. What makes this different is that you can see the snow deposited on the ice in the fjord and the really strong reflection of sunlight in the cloud presumably caused by the cristals facets. I could be wrong of course.

Beautiful job of processing.

Given the deposits aligned with putative wind direction and in the lee of the frozen-in bergs, blowing snow seems a better fit. The rest of the granules could be examined with higher bands designed to show cloud extents but my sense is this was a very clear day overall. Lenticular clouds are commonly formed downwind of mountain peaks but the features here are a poor match to that.

A cloud of frozen crystals (rather than condensed liquid vapor) is difficult to distinguish from a cloud of blowing frozen snow crystals; it seems like the latter might be larger and some optical effect could be associated with that. Larger crystals would settle out sooner, which seems to be happening here. A conventional snowstorm is not plausible. The volume of snow involved seems very small; snow blowing over ridges is very common in mountainous settings, as is blowing sand off ridges in sand dunes.

A very interesting break up of old ice is taken place in the mouth of Independence Fjord, if that piece ice takes of into Wandel Sea, Prinsesse Margrethe Ø will be released from sea ice for the first time in several years ( 6 - 7 years if my memory is correct):

IIRC in the 50's Independence Fjord had the same ridging pattern that marked the Ellesmere and North Greenland Ice Shelves. I believe that this was still present in some coves until the 2012? melt.

Here we got 1 more example of data received for 2 different sources (Nasa and Sentinel 2) thanks to Jim and his crew on the Ice Bridge Mission 2019. The images from Nasa is showing half of the calving front and the Port Side og the glacier.

The Gate at the entry of Independence Fjord is now open and massive amounts of sea ice will be broken inside the 3 fjords:

Breaking old news
On my roundtrip among glaciers in Greenland I realized there was something I never knew was there, so guys still some gold nuggets left out there!

For the first time and in colors I am happy to present this shape changing calving event to you guys in ASIF.

The calving happened between August 10 and August 24 1985, the data between these 2 dates is muddy.

The last image from August 23 2020 is showing the present shape, and the calf you see in the fjord is probably an iceberg from that time (1985).

The arch into Independence Fjord collapsed (early) and the result will be interesting to follow, like what is happening in the Jøkel Bugt / Zachariae / 79 area.

A spectacular day in the Arctic, and here another extreme, I never saw this happened this way before, it is a 100 % Lift Off, and the sea ice is covering aprox 3.300 km2 or 2 times the size of Greater London 1.580 km2.
This including the clearance of sea ice in Jøkelbugt/Zachariae Isstrøm/Nioghalvfjerdsfjorden is the new reality I am afraid?
