JAXA (ADS) 2023 Arctic SIE daily minimum: June Poll
« on: June 01, 2023, 07:15:42 AM »
The poll is for the minimum Daily Arctic sea ice extent in 2023, as measured by ADS-NIPR-VISHOP (JAXA).

September minimums have been:

Which is the best answer to Sep-2012 ASI lost (compared to 1979-2000)?
50% [NSIDC Extent] or
73% [PIOMAS Volume]

Volume is harder to measure than extent, but 3-dimensional space is real, 2D's hide ~50% thickness gone.
-> IPCC/NSIDC trends [based on extent] underestimate the real speed of ASI lost.

Lacking any data whatsoever at this early stage I went for the typical/conservative 4.00-4.50. Thanks to Juan as usual for starting this traditional poll.

Looking at the slow start, and in trend with the last 2 years, I gambled on 4.25 and 4.75 million km2.

Between 3.75 and 4.25 million km^2

Nothing more than a mostly uniformed guess.

Went for the 4.25 to 4.75 option also. Still could go lower if it's a warm summer but there is little to suggest at this moment in time that ice extent should be any different compared to what we seen in most years so far in the 2010s. I have noticed on worldview the ice seems more largely broken up into floes more widely this year which may increase the threat of dispersion occuring which could play a part in the latter part of the melt season.

3.5 to 4.0 for me, with a caveat about the ENSO update due of 8 June - that might make me change my mind.

Here is some data.

If sea ice extent losses from now to minimum are at the average of the last 10 years, then the JAXA  sea ice extent September minimum will be 4.51 million km2, with the range of the last 10 years from 3.95 to 4.82 million km2. A repeat of the 2012 outlier suggests a minimum of around 2.5 million km2, a repeat of 1996 5 million.

My guess goes for the 4 ± 0.25 M bin, with a bet for the upper half of that bin.
It is too late just to be concerned about Climate Change

There is a big difference between the table presented by Juan and the graph by Gerontocrat. Which dataset is being used?

Is the first area and the second extent?

Juan shows 3.55 for 2020, Gero in his second chart shows 3.55 for 2020. So it seems a match, both are JAXA extents.
Gero's first chart shows the plume of this year's extent extrapolated using the losses of each year, and shows around 4.00 for 2020.

My mistake Gero is showing plumes not normal plots.

Just to make it clear....

The plume graph takes the remaining sea ice extent losses of the previous 10 years and applies them to 2023 sea ice extent as of now. This gives a range of outcomes with the dotted line being the average outcome.

If nothing else it gives a hint as to the range of outcomes, which gets less as the season approaches its end.

4.25-4.5 (I actually voted 4.25-4.75 but it was a coin flip whether to take that or 4.0-4.5)

Sorry about that. :(
I went with "Above 5.25 km2", that is sure to happen!    :o    ;D

I will fix both things on the next poll.   ::)

Anyway, I am voting on the 4-4.5 million km2.

Here are the two mistakes. They are still there, but the poll is closed.
Sorry that I made them. I was traveling and I did the poll fast.
I will be more careful next month.

I have also now edited the heading. Can't move your mistaken vote though.
And again, many thanks to you Juan for making these polls.

With the minimum of 4.135 Mkm2 on Sep 16th, 18 out of 44 June voters got it right, quite a good result.

Is this poll supposed to still be open? (I just tried to vote, as a test, and it counted my "under 2 million". I have already removed it.)
Before I came here I was confused about this subject. Having listened to your lecture I am still confused. But on a higher level.
