They are not even waiting for Obama to leave office!

Automakers ask Trump not to make them produce electric cars in first lobbying effort since election
Quote
Not even two days after Donald Trump’s election, automakers have started their lobbying effort to weaken the requirements for fuel consumption reduction. The current goal is for a fleet average of more than 50 mpg by 2025, which would require automakers to produce more electric vehicles in their fleet to compensate for popular gas-guzzling pickup trucks and SUVs.

In a letter sent to Trump’s transition team yesterday, a powerful automaker lobbying group claims automakers cannot produce zero-emission cars at a competitive price and asks to lower the requirements for them to comply.

The group in question, Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, represents almost every major automaker with US operations except Tesla.

I'm surprised Tesla stock has not gone down more sharply following the election. I would not be shocked to see Trump cutting off all subsidies and incentives for electric cars, as part of his grandiose plan to bring about climate change as fast as humanly possible.

Oren,
This article lists 7 reasons why renewables and electric cars will still move ahead despite Trump.

Tesla’s Future in Trump’s World
Elon Musk is up against a starkly different agenda, but the energy transition he invigorated can’t be stopped.
Quote
...
7. Trade barriers with Mexico would hurt Tesla’s rivals
Trump wants to scrap or renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). That could be a dicey proposition for the car industry. Since 2010, nine automakers, including Ford Motor Co., GM and Fiat Chrysler have announced more than $24 billion in Mexican investments. They rely on Mexican plants to produce millions of vehicles and a high volume of parts.

By contrast, Tesla’s manufacturing and assembly are done almost entirely in California and Nevada. Tesla also plans to begin solar-panel production next year at SolarCity’s massive plant in Buffalo, N.Y. Tariffs on solar panels made outside the U.S. would make Tesla's American-made products more competitive.

In the end, the confluence of all of these forces, but especially the precipitous decline of coal and increasing affordability of renewable sources of energy, is probably too strong to be reversed by the incoming Republican administration. That’s good news for Tesla, and a lot of other companies working to clean up the energy supply.

Hyundai’s electric IONIQ is starting to make its way around the world
Quote
The vehicle has been on the road in South Korea since the beginning of the year, but now it’s starting to be delivered in Europe and the company says that North America will follow.

Hyunday claims a NEDC-rated range of 174 miles, but the real world range is closer to ~110 miles on a single charge. It makes the vehicle competitive with the likes of the Nissan LEAF and the BMW i3. Starting at £28,995 ($37,900 USD) in the UK, it is also competitive in term of pricing with those models.

When Faraday Future revealed their (puzzling, Batmobile-like) concept in January, they claimed the secret to their impending success was that they were "really fast."

Faraday Future contractor halts construction on Nevada-based factory
Quote
Will work on the factory ever resume? Many are skeptical. As one person who commented on the Jalopnik story said, “All they’ve done so far is push some sand around in the desert.” Money due but not paid. Top executives running for the exits. Work halted on the proposed factory. Add it all up and the odds are Faraday Future is dead in the water.

California hits milestone of 250,000 electric plug-in cars
Quote
The state of California reached the milestone of a quarter million plug-in electric vehicles on the road since the resurgence of EVs in 2010. With 30 different electric vehicles available in California due to its ZEV mandate, the state is able to grow its EV fleet significantly faster than the rest of the US.

Which may help explain this new announcement from Hyundai:

Hyundai announces 4 new all-electric cars by 2020
Quote
Hyundai CEO Dave Zuchowski confirmed that the company is planning to release five hybrids (HEV), four plug-in hybrids (PHEV), four electric vehicles (BEV) and one fuel cell vehicle (FCV) by 2020.

That’s the biggest commitment to electrification made by Hyundai so far – especially the four all-electric models.

Though it looks like the new IONIQ, which is offered as an HEV, PHEV and BEV, is being counted among those 14 models since Zuchowski was referring to vehicles being offered in the US and the IONIQ hasn’t arrived yet.

Hyundai is feeling the pressure from upcoming stricter CAFE and ZEV targets [in the U.S.], but the CEO says that the company is serious about not only meeting those target, but also beating them with longer range batteries at lower costs. ...

Mazda finally promises to add all-electric cars in its lineup by 2019
Quote
Kogai especially referenced California’s ZEV mandate as an incentive to produce EVs. While it sounds like Mazda is looking into making compliance cars, it’s better than nothing and it shows the ZEV mandates are working.

Over the last year, Mazda has been involved with Toyota in technology development programs and electric vehicles have been mentioned as a potential segment the two companies could team up on, but it has so far been unconfirmed.

As two of the last major automakers not producing all-electric vehicles, it would make sense for Mazda and Toyota to team up in order to accelerate their programs and catch up with those that are now at their second or third generation of EVs, like Tesla, Nissan, BMW or GM.

Volkswagen to Cut 30,000 Jobs After Emissions Scandal
Quote
FRANKFURT, Germany — Automaker Volkswagen said Friday it will shed 30,000 jobs to cut costs as it tries to recover from its diesel emissions scandal and invests more in electric-powered vehicles and digital services.

Company officials said that 23,000 of the job cuts will come in Germany. It said the measures will save some 3.7 billion euros ($4 billion) a year from 2020.

Volkswagen has agreed to pay $15 billion under a settlement with U.S. authorities and owners of some 500,000 vehicles with software that turned off emissions controls. Around 11 million cars worldwide have the deceptive software.

The company has said it aims to cut nonessential costs and investments and shift investment toward battery-powered cars and services such as car-sharing and ride-sharing.

VW's Long Road Ahead
Quote
Cutting 30,000 jobs sounds dramatic. For Volkswagen AG it's a drop in the ocean, equivalent to just 5 percent of the global workforce. It will still employ about 600,000 people.

Volkswagen's Risking an Electric White Elephant
Quote
Battery technology seems likely to displace the combustion engine and comprise a big chunk of the value of tomorrow's vehicles. German carmakers have arguably been too casual in leaving others to develop battery cells -- there is a risk of an unhealthy and margin-diluting dependency.

However, given the technological headstart enjoyed by the likes of Samsung SDI, LG Chem and Panasonic, there are reasons to think VW would struggle to compete, at least initially. Deutsche Bank analysts think VW might need up to 10 years to catch up.

VW CEO: building a battery factory to support electric car production ‘makes sense’ now
Quote
After the ‘Dieselgate’ scandal, Volkswagen has come out as one of the major automakers most committed to electric cars. Earlier this year, the company announced its plan to build 2 to 3 million all-electric cars a year and to unveil 30 new models by 2025 – across all its brands (VW, Audi, Porsche, etc.).

Tesla is aiming for similar volumes and we all know what the company did in order to secure the battery supply to support that kind of electric car production; the Gigafactory. Earlier this year, an insider report came out saying that Volkswagen was about to present to its board of directors a project similar to Tesla’s Gigafactory and build a ‘multi-billion euro battery factory’, but Volkswagen CEO, Matthias Müller, later denied the plan.

VW’s management is apparently now more open to the idea of Volkswagen building its own battery factory following a restructuring of the company announced last week.

Last Friday, VW announced a deal with its labor unions to cut 30,000 jobs within its current operations while creating 9,000 new jobs in new operations including, battery and electric vehicle production, and mobility services, like car-sharing.

It looks like Volkswagen warmed up to the idea of owning its battery manufacturing. Müller told a local newspaper (via Reuters):

“If more than a quarter of our cars are to be electronic vehicles in the in the foreseeable future then we are going to need approximately three million batteries a year. Then it makes sense to build our own factory.“

Tesla Supercharger was sabotaged, affecting route between LA and Vegas ahead of busy weekend
Quote
The supercharger seems to have been down since at least Saturday, per a post on Tesla Motors Club in the Barstow supercharger thread, but was working as of Thursday around noon per PlugShare checkins. Tesla is aware of the outage, but will likely not have the station up until the end of the month – after the big holiday travel weekend.

Tony Williams, longtime EV driver and owner of EV charging adapter provider Quick Charge Power, went and checked the damage.  He has posted some pictures of the damage, which is quite extensive, and suggests that the job seems to be a deliberate act by knowledgeable people with access to “commercial grade” tools – certainly more than just a “smash ‘n grab”.

2017 Ford Focus Electric coming with new 33.5 kWh battery pack for 115 miles of range
Quote
Ford hasn’t been promoting the vehicle since, but they brought a model to the Los Angeles Auto Show this week – though it was apparently almost hidden.

Electrek reader Kent Steinbrenner was at the show looking for the Focus Electric last Saturday and told us:

“I finally found it, along with all of the other Energi models, hiding behind a partition along one wall of their exhibit. Why would they tuck those cars away like that? Anyway, lo and behold, they had a 2017 Focus Electric there—what looked to be a production model—with a Monroney sticker on display, although with no pricing and a note on it saying “This Vehicle Not for Sale.”

Two things:

1)  Link below to an article about "the coming car recession."  I HIGHLY recommend the article...and the chart in the article regarding subprime debt on car purchases will get your attention.

http://www.businessinsider.com/us-car-sales-begin-to-drop-2016-11

2)  The second thing....and I have mentioned this before....is that, I believe over the coming COUPLE OF YEARS...you will see people hold off on car purchases as more and more electric vehicles hit the showrooms.  As always....big things start out small....but over time, more peole will be thinking:  "Why should I buy a gasoline powered car...when it will likely be worth WAY less in just a few years?"  They will opt to wait till they see an electric car they like, want, and can afford.

The Chevy Bolt is coming out now on the west coast in the US.  It will be out in other areas of the US in coming months.  Will be interesting to see the reaction to it.

The Tesla Model 3 will be out in later 2017.  Other car companies will be coming out with models in the next couple of years.  in addition....battery improvements AND cost decreases in battery's are coming as well as volume ramps up and more improvements are made.

Germany is looking at the possibility of banning all fossil fueled cars by 2030.  Things will be moving fairly quickly over the next 10 years as those types of things kick in.

Tesla Shock Means Global Gasoline Demand Has All But Peaked
Quote
After fueling the 20th century automobile culture that reshaped cities and defined modern life, gasoline has had its day.

The International Energy Agency forecasts that global gasoline consumption has all but peaked as more efficient cars and the advent of electric vehicles from new players such as Tesla Motors Inc. halt demand growth in the next 25 years. That shift will have profound consequences for the oil-refining industry because gasoline accounts for one in four barrels consumed worldwide.

“Electric cars are happening,” IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol said in an interview in London, adding that their number will rise from little more than 1 million last year to more than 150 million by 2040.

The cresting of gasoline demand shows how rapidly the oil landscape is changing, casting a shadow over an industry that commonly forecasts decades of growth ahead. Royal Dutch Shell Plc, the world’s second-biggest energy company by market value, shocked rivals this month when a senior executive said overall oil demand could peak in as little as five years.
...
For Philip Verleger, president of the consultant PKVerleger LLC in Colorado and a veteran oil-market analyst, the IEA’s outlook is one of the more optimistic outcomes for the global industry.

“Refiners across the globe can only hope that this forecast turns out to be right -- because all the indications are today that consumption is going to begin dropping not in 2030, but probably in 2020,” said Verleger. “It’s the best news a dying patient can hope to get.”

The linked Economist article is entitled: "From oiloholics to e-totallers: The coming revolution in transport".  It indicates that sometime after 2020, growth in the electrical vehicle market might begin to contribute to a reduction in carbon emissions from the transportation sector:

http://www.economist.com/news/special-report/21710635-what-changes-driving-habits-and-improved-batteries-might-do-oil-demand-coming

Extract: "Since the drop in oil prices in 2014, and a recovery in employment, the number of vehicle-miles travelled has rebounded, and sales of trucks and SUVs, which are less fuel-efficient than cars, have hit record highs.

This sensitivity to prices and incomes is important for global oil demand. More than half the world’s oil is used for transport, and of that, 46% goes into passenger cars. But the response to lower prices has been partially offset by dramatic improvements in fuel efficiency in America and elsewhere, thanks to standards like America’s Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE), the EU’s rules on CO2 emissions and those in place in China since 2012.

… some forecasters think demand for petrol may peak within the next 10-15 years even if the world’s vehicle fleet keeps growing.

Occo Roelofsen of McKinsey, a consultancy, goes further. He reckons that thanks to the decline in the use of oil in light vehicles, total consumption of liquid fuels will begin to fall within a decade, and that in the next few decades driving will be shaken up by electric vehicles (EVs), self-driving cars and car-sharing. America’s Department of Energy (DoE) officials underline the importance of such a shift, given the need for “deep decarbonisation” enshrined in the Paris climate agreement. “We can’t decarbonise by mid-century if we don’t electrify the transportation sector,” says a senior official in Washington, DC. It is still unclear what effect Donald Trump’s election will have on this transition.

In a recent paper entitled “Will We Ever Stop Using Fossil Fuels?”, Thomas Covert and Michael Greenstone of the University of Chicago, and Christopher Knittel of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, argue that several technological advances are needed to displace oil in the car industry. Even with oil at $100 a barrel, the price of batteries to power EVs would need to fall by a factor of three, and they would need to charge much faster. Moreover, the electricity used to power the cars would need to become far less carbon-intensive; for now, emissions from EVs powered by America’s electricity grid are higher than those from highly efficient petrol engines, say the authors.

But imagine that the EVI’s forecast were achievable. By 2020 new EV sales would be running at around 7m a year, displacing the growth in sales of new petrol engines …"

Daimler announces $11 billion investment in electric vehicles
Quote
The German automaker admitted that it fell behind in the electric vehicle segment, but it hopes to come out on top by 2025 with 25% of its production being electric. Now an executive confirmed that the company is planning a $11 billion investment for the first series of vehicles to come out.
Daimler board member Thomas Weber told German newspaper last week (via Reuters):

“For this push we want to invest up to 10 billion euros,” he said, adding three of the models will be Smart branded cars and that thanks to larger batteries they will be able to increase their cruising range up to 700 kilometers.

We already know about the luxury SUV under the Mercedes-Benz brand and one more SUV and two electric sedans are expected to follow.

Weber added that there are a few other models we don’t know about yet:

“By 2025 we want to develop 10 electric cars based on the same architecture,”...

5 major automakers join forces to deploy 400 ultra-fast (350 kW) charging stations for electric vehicles in Europe
Quote
BMW, Daimler’s Mercedes, Ford, and Volkswagen’s Audi and Porsche announced today that they are creating a joint-venture with the goal of a “quick build-up of a sizable number of stations in order to enable long-range travel for battery electric vehicle drivers.”

The new venture is similar to the Ultra E project announced earlier this year to deploy 25 new charging station for electric vehicles along the trans-European transport network (TEN-T), but it’s apparently a separate and much more ambitious project to deploy 400 stations across Europe.

The new network will be based on Combined Charging System (CCS) standard technology and each station will feature not only both level 2 AC chargers and level 3 DC chargers, but also the new ” ultra-fast high-powered chargers” and, like the ones of the Ultra E project, they will be able to deliver up to 350 kW – more than twice the capacity of the current best charger, Tesla’s Supercharger at 145 kW.

Report: GM will lose ~$9,000 for every Chevy Bolt EV it sells before ZEV credit
Quote
An important reason for the loss is that GM has little control over almost all of the more costly components of the car. LG is an incredibly important supplier to GM’s Bolt EV program. In fact, the Bolt is almost as much an LG product as it is a GM product. LG Chem supplies the battery cells, but between its other divisions, the South Korean giant supplies all the main powertrain components, the HVAC system, and the instrument/infotainment cluster, among other things.

GM already confirmed that it is paying LG $145 per kWh for the battery cells. That alone is about $8,700 per car and with the battery pack, it could easily go up over $12,000. That’s only for the battery pack with cells. Considering all the other parts GM is buying from LG, the automaker could easily be paying over $20,000 per vehicle to LG before even starting to assemble the vehicle.
...
In the meantime, it will be difficult for GM to deliver the car where it will not get $16,000 to $20,000 worth of ZEV credits to compensate the loss on the gross margin. If you are in California or another ZEV state, you could consider the Bolt EV since it starts at an attractive price after incentives, but it will be more difficult to get your hands on one anywhere else – like it was in the early days of the Chevy Volt or as it is currently with the Chevy Spark EV.

GM ready to lose $9K a pop chasing electric car boom

While the Trump administration may dilute federal programs that take aim at carbon-dioxide spewing cars, California won’t be backing down, certainly not during Governor Jerry Brown’s term. The most populous state is such a powerhouse — roughly one in eight new vehicles was registered there in the first half of the year — that companies will keep spitting out electrics for the privilege of selling everything else in their lineups.

Obama moves to lock in vehicle greenhouse gas rules
Quote
WASHINGTON, Nov 30 (Reuters) - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on Wednesday said it will push to lock in fuel efficiency standards central to outgoing President Barack Obama's climate policy before the Trump administration takes over in January.

Automakers had appealed to President-elect Donald Trump, who has been critical of Obama's climate policies, to review the rules requiring them to nearly double fleet-wide fuel efficiency by 2025, saying they impose significant costs and are out of step with consumer preferences.

The EPA under law had to decide by April 2018 whether to modify the 2022-2025 model year vehicle emission rules requiring average fleet-wide efficiency of more than 50 miles per gallon. Instead, the agency said it will end the public comment period by Dec. 30, and could move to lock in the rules after then and before the Obama administration leaves office on Jan. 20.

The EPA in a statement said it concluded after a lengthy review that automakers can meet the 2025 standards.

Amazing. I bet the economics are really good too. To think of the amount of money they will save on diesel and the infrastructure to store that diesel. Also I bet there are significant energy savings due to large amount of idle times. Wind resistance is a also non issue, so the energy savings compared to an automotive application will be significant.

This is such great news.

I am an energy reservoir seemingly intent on lowering entropy for self preservation.

Driving-assist features -- let alone full autonomy -- will save so many lives.

Quote
Getting only four to five hours of sleep in a night is the same as driving when legally drunk, and if you sleep less than four hours in given 24-hour period, you are as impaired as you would be if you are twice the legal limit of alcohol," Jake Nelson, director, Traffic Safety Advocacy and Research of AAA, told TODAY.

Missing two to three hours of sleep in a 24-hour period more than quadruples the risk of a crash, compared to drivers who get seven hours of sleep.

How serious is the risk of encountering a drowsy driver? People who wouldn't drive while drunk or text and drive may drive while sleepy.

At least one in 25 drivers surveyed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2015 confessed to nodding off at the wheel in the previous month. Sleep-impaired driving was a factor in as many as 6,000 fatal crashes in 2013.

Electric cars sales in Europe doubled in 2015
Quote
Roughly 145,000 new electric vehicles (EV) were sold in Europe last year – twice as much as in 2014 – making the European market the second biggest in the world, according to a recent T&E report. EV sales have now reached the important milestone of a 1% market share and figures for the year to date suggest significantly more than 200,000 plug-in vehicles will be sold in Europe in 2016. That would take the total number of EVs on the road to more than half a million cars.
...
... Although EVs still constitute only a fraction of all car models available, Europe (including Switzerland and Norway) is the second biggest EV market in the world behind China.

Paris bans cars for second day running as pollution chokes city
Vehicles with odd-number plates were banned on Tuesday and, on Wednesday, it was the even numbers’ turn
Quote
Paris authorities restricted traffic in the city for a second day after a “lid of pollution” sealed the capital, causing concern over public health.

Photographs showed a grey veil of dirty air trapped over the city, masking the horizon and, at times, landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower. Experts said it was the longest most intense spike in pollution for at least 10 years and was expected to continue for at least another day if not longer.

Volkswagen: Cost lines for EVs and diesels could cross by 2025
Quote
“Emissions standards are getting tougher and tougher, and it is getting more and more expensive to meet those standards,” Dr. Matthias Erb, a Volkswagen Group of America Executive VP, told Green Car Congress. “As a result, we see a cost line crossing between battery-electric vehicles and diesels. Some of the strategists in our company see that by 2023, 2025, due to the emissions standards, diesels are going to become really expensive. We expect that when those two lines cross, this will be the time when huge pressure comes on diesel.”

In Vancouver, 50% of trips are by foot, bike, or transit. This video shows how they did it.
Step one: Start decades ago.
Quote
Vancouver, British Columbia, has aggressive aspirations for sustainability. Its goal is to be entirely powered by clean energy by 2050 — not just electricity, but transportation and heating as well. (I talked to city manager Sadhu Johnston about it in July.)

As part of that effort, the city adopted the goal of 50 percent “sustainable mode share” by 2020 — half of all trips in the city taken by walking, biking, or transit rather than automobile.

Fun fact: The city hit that target in 2015, five years early.

Yeah, right.  ;D

Unfortunately, it seems we must part with our CNG-powered Opel Combo, as there are a few specks of corrosion on the CNG tanks and that's enough for not letting it pass the motor vehicle test, even though it's in good shape generally (10 years old). I was hoping to drive it for another two years and then buy a second-hand plug-in Prius.

These are still too expensive now, but I expect them to become a lot cheaper two years from now - in the Netherlands that is, and import it to Austria - as all the government tax breaks there are ending after January 1st, which means probably a lot of lease drivers will look for something new.

That 10-15 mile all-electric range on the plug-in Prius would be perfect for 80-90% of our driving, and we could charge it with our solar panels or for free in the nearest town. We also want to buy some good bikes, so we can drive that Prius for 10-15-20 years (owners say it's a fantastic car, little maintenance, etc).

Even better would be to ditch the car and go for the bikes, and then just rent a car when we really need it (that would be much cheaper too) but we can't handle that quite yet as we still have so much work in and around the house, often needing materials, etc.

Timing sucks, and what sucks even more is that almost all Opel Combos (and CNG Zafiras) have this problem after 10 years, even though the CNG tanks are said to have a 20 year life expectancy. It's planned obsolescence, as the corrosion is caused by the suspension lashes (some sand gets in, rubs off the paint, et voilà, corrosion). Opel knows this 100%.

Volkswagen is even worse, with cars exploding while filling up because the CNG bottles' integrity is compromised by the corrosion. I think the CNG days are over, anyhow, but again, I would have preferred to drive our Combo for another two years.

All-electric is out of the question (too expensive, too much software  ;)), converting the Combo to electric (my favourite idea) is too expensive and too much of a hassle, fixing the Combo by replacing the gas bottles is too expensive (relatively speaking), so it looks like we're going to have to buy a shitty car and some good bikes, and use the latter as much as we can.

Stupid addiction...

Timing sucks...

Here, too!  I was this close to getting a LEAF -- even had a J1772 charger installed in the garage -- after they came out with the 2016 model with 107 mile range.  (I have a weekly trip that would make the previous 70-some mile range worrisome.)  But a complete refresh with 200-mile range is due soon, and there were some problems with the 2016 model, and how long a lease would I get because I'm really waiting for a Tesla Model Y, which we should hear more about this spring, but Tesla's U.S. tax credit allotment will likely be gone before the Model Y appears....

And here comes the future Opel Ampera-e:

Want to Go Electric but Can't Afford a Tesla? This Could Be the Answer
Quote
At GM's battery-car plant in Orion Township, Michigan, production of the Bolt is now running nearly 15 cars an hour on the line it shares with the conventional, gas-powered Chevrolet Sonic subcompact, or around 100 a day on a single eight-hour shift.

"And there's more capacity at this plant if we need to tap into it," says Yves Dontigny, the Bolt Launch Manager, during a tour of the plant.

By some observers' estimates, GM spent more than $1 billion to develop the Chevy Bolt EV. The figure could have been substantially higher — likely pricing the car out of the mainstream — if the maker hadn't figured out how to produce Bolt and Sonic on the same line.
http://www.nbcnews.com/business/autos/want-go-electric-can-t-afford-tesla-could-be-answer-n695036

Still not sure how the car can win all those awards before customers even get to see how it works in real life, but there you go.  From all I've read, don't expect to see the car in the U.S. outside of ZEV credit states -- it's essentially a compliance car for GM, allowing it to sell more gas-guzzling trucks.

Norway reaches rare milestone of 100,000 all-electric vehicles on the roads, wants 400,000 by 2020
Quote
Norway, a global leader in electric vehicle adoption, announced that it reached the milestone of 100,000 all-electric vehicles on the roads – something only a few countries can claim and certainly none of the size of Norway (~5.2 million people). It’s important to note here that we are talking about all-electric zero-emission vehicles (BEVs) and not just plug-in vehicles.
...
A myriad of EV incentives helped Norway’s vehicle adoption and several of those incentives, like 25% VAT tax exemption, were set to phase out after the country reaches 100,000 vehicles, but as we reported earlier this year, they passed an initiative to keep the VAT exemption for electric vehicles until 2020.
...
Norway set the goal for 100% of new car sales to be zero-emission vehicles starting in 2025. As of September 2016, 28.8% of new car sales were plug-in electric vehicles and all-electric cars have a 19.0% market shares – significantly more than any other country, but still far from 100%.
...
Norway’s next goal: 400,000 all-electric vehicles by 2020. Bu argues that’s what they need to achieve in order for the country to stay on track with the goals set by the parliament.

Interesting solar charging solution.  Low power, but off-grid and transportable.

Fresno County, California orders 13 solar-powered EV ARC chargers
Quote
Envision Solar (OTCQB: EVSI) has secured an order for 13 of its EV ARC self-contained charging units from the Fresno County Rural Transit Agency (FCRTA). The solar-powered EV ARC EV chargers will be installed throughout Fresno County, particularly in disadvantaged communities.

The EV ARC fits inside a parking space and does not reduce available parking. The system’s solar generation is enhanced by the company’s EnvisionTrak system, which tracks the sun, increasing electricity generation by 18 to 25 percent. Energy is stored in integrated batteries for charging day or night.

The EV ARCs are equipped with emergency power panels, which can be used in the event of a power outage. First responders can depend on them as a source of emergency power

Chevy Bolt EV is coming to Europe as the ‘Opel Ampera E’ in ‘June 2017’, says GM

Bernt G. Jessen, Director of Opel in Norway, told local media this week that his country will be the first in Europe to get the vehicle. He expects deliveries to start in “June 2017”.

They started taking pre-orders this week and the vehicle is listed at just over 300,000 Norwegian Kroners, which is equivalent to about $35,000 USD at the current exchange rate or just below the MSRP in the US of $37,500.

California:  PG&E to Deploy 7,500 Charging Stations for Electric Cars
Quote
A decision adopted today by the California Public Utilities Commission would result in the nation’s single- largest deployment of charging stations for electric vehicles (EVs). The decision builds upon a settlement agreement supported by a diverse coalition of environmentalists, automakers, labor unions, EV drivers, social equity advocates, and EV charging companies.

In combination with similar charging station programs the commission authorized earlier this year for Southern California utilities, today’s decision will help California meet its goal of deploying 1.5 million EVs by 2025 and challenge the monopoly enjoyed by Big Oil for far too long. It’s also in line with laws recently enacted in California and Oregon that direct utilities to electrify the transportation sector.

Under today’s decision, one of the nation’s largest utilities —Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E)— will deploy approximately 7,500 in northern and central California over three years, and use the lessons learned to improve future, larger scale deployments needed to comply with state law. This is in addition to the approximately 5,000 EV charging stations to be installed over the next several years by Southern California Edison (SCE) and San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) in programs approved earlier this year....

Sign of the changing times for car use in the U.S.:   Not that long ago, the suburban mall was the most popular place to go, to wander about and shop, and for teenagers to hang out.  Now, instead of travelling to the mall, people shop online, and teenagers stay connected through social media.  Per the article, "As malls are torn down across the U.S., American Dream is the only large suburban mall being developed anywhere in the country."

How Did the American Dream Mall Turn Into a Nightmare?

I absolutely agree with you in the fact of the useless software in EV-and the danger of getting more and more dependent on some firms wellfare. We recently bought a second hand ZOE. Alone the feeling to drive it, to feel the instantly available power -compared with normal cars- no need to shift, and the chance to drive with zero emission: it is FUN. I think it has the potential to convince people, if they get the chance to realize the need to drive that way. But most people do carry that fear to change, scepsis...a wrong, misguided fear.

We do not need that electronic stuff in vehicles, software. Cars should bring us from A to B. We should stay dry and comfortable. That is enough. If I look at a VW Golf EV there is so much perfection...so much space. It costs, but do we really need that kind of perfection?! We are a family of six and we only need a six seated car when we go to our summer holidays. Wouldn't it be an alternative to rent one and to take two small EVs for normal life?

We have the power as costumers to ask for the right solutions. For us and earth as well.
There are chances to elect them.

Nobody needs a self driving car with the potential power to fly to the moon! Fuck perfection and the stupid PS-competition!  8)
