Peter,

The reason it is not a coincidence is that there is less thicker MYI, so a given amount of thickness loss over the melt season can reveal more open ocean. The further into the pack that there is predominant FYI the greater melt can proceed into the pack before being impeded by thick MYI. That is the reason for the two plots tracking.
