Midtgårdgletscher / South East Greenland
« on: August 30, 2013, 04:49:15 PM »
Midtgårdgletscher another glacier in the Sermelik Fjord system and a neighbor to Helheim and Fernis Gletscher, retreated big time in the 1972 - 2013 period, almost 15 km, and  a recent calving even went unnoticed, as can be seen from following images:

A red line on the 2013 image indicates the 1972 calving front.

Midgårdgletscher and her unnamed neighbor-gletscher esspecially which originates from Femstjernen (Five Star) further up, is certainly on the move as many other gletschers nowadays in Greenland
Something is definitely rotten in the state of Greenland:

Espen....looking at this image, the unnamed glacier has deep, pronounced crevasses over the entire visible portion. It also moved much faster than its sister. Could these deep crevasses actually be indicative of glacier speed? Could the crevasses be formed by the tremendous stress put on the glacier as it has sped up?

Shared Humanity, it is under investigation :)

And I can assure you 2015 will be an exciting season, glaciers all over the place are trying hard to become head-lines!

Boy there is a lot of ice up there!
To think that my second choice for graduate school would have taken me to Greenland (to study rock deformation).
Arctic ice is healthy for children and other living things because "we cannot negotiate with the melting point of ice"

Midgårdgletscher update:

In the fjord Sermilik where Helheim Gletscher is also situated we find Midgårdgletscher together with one of the arms of the Femstjernen Gletcher Roundabout, both streams are retreating into new record lows, not seen earlier in satelite history:
