Greenland glaciers in Geonames
« on: June 12, 2014, 07:56:01 PM »
Hello all

I'm often at lost figuring where places which are spoken about here can be. My reference for toponyms in general is http://geonames.org but data quality and coverage for Greenland is suboptimal to say the least. Using the geonames web services I've extracted easily all the features of type "Glacier" in Greenland, with their permanent geonames URI, names and coordinates. The result is shared here http://bit.ly/1oTjRO9. 391 entries, with a lot of duplicates and certainly inaccurate coordinates for many of them. More comments can be added, the document is open in edit mode.
Geonames being a collaborative and open data project, we can certainly here by a collective effort come out with better data to feed back Geonames.
If people are interested in this effort there are two ways to do it :
- Work on the shared documents and push the results to Geonames.
- Work directly on the geonames wiki to move things at their right place, correct names, delete duplicates, add links to Wikipedia articles ...
I've started with Greenland glaciers but of course this effort can be extended if there is interest to other feature types around the Arctic.
